    I could see Disney going a few directions:
    (1) theme everything around Moana or Lilo and Stitch
    (2) work with actual Polynesian artists and historians to create a respectful tiki
    (3) go for an "enchanted tropics" vibe with tropical forest and beach influences from around the world, mainly focusing on nature rather than people
    In any case, the tiki room attraction will need a serious revamp and will probably have to lose the tiki room song. They've been doing similar with other attractions, like trading splash mountain for a princess and the frog attraction.

      I do love the idea of a tiki cthulhu mashup though!

      1) So just make it all IP-based. That doesn't solve anything because it's just literally the same problem. Moana and Lilo and Stitch aren't any better than mid-century Tiki, they're just newer.
      2) Then it's not actually Tiki. As I said in my video, Tiki is specifically Americans' own reflection on their own experience of the South Pacific.
      3) Which it already does. The Enchanted Tiki Room doesn't represent people in any way, shape, or form, except arguably the birds doing impressions of Bing Crosby and Maurice Chevalier. The whole thing is a vague kind of tropical escapism already.
      // They've been doing similar with other attractions, like trading splash mountain for a princess and the frog attraction.//
      Ironically, they're doing EXACTLY what Song of the South was criticized for. Princess and the Frog and the new revamp of Splash Mountain based on it completely gloss over the realities of slavery, segregation, and racism in Louisiana history. It's also not lost on me that the Uncle Remus stories are authentic Black folktales while Princess and the Frog was originally a story by a white author.
      So really, what this is all proving is how completely arbitrary the problem is. Any solution is just as bad as the original, or what the original already does. This is all about perception and what the popular opinion people are told to think is. It has nothing to do with actually having thought it through.

    Hello, though the introduction to tiki culture and your commentary on the datk universe sruff has been quite interesting, I wanted to ask a question upon a different topic. If I recall in one of your Livestreams you spoke of being a published author about The Lost World. Recently on a magazine called Prehistoric Times I found an article about that movie, which lead me to start the audiobook st my dialysis treatments. I have seen the movie, but never read the Professor Challenger tales before. Haf you thought of doing a take on film and books in this end of things? Thank you for the time.

      I'm sure I will eventually, especially now that I've had a couple requests! In the mean time, you're welcome to check out my old Lost World website at silentmoviemonsters.tripod.com

    Most of the time it seems like instead of it being an issue where someone is actually offended, someone else feels the need to speak out for someone they feel might be offended. This is an insane stance to take because how is speaking in place for someone else not also a cultural appropriation in itself?

    So next time they will turn down designs without comment. They have that right. I think the artist comes off entitled , and he has probably burned his bridge to Disney, which he probably deserves.

      Disney burned its bridge with him. He doesn't need them. Shag said right in his post that HE'S rethinking ever working with them again. Disney is no longer the be-all, end-all goal it once was.

      @MonsterKidCory says losers on TH-cam. 🙄
      Your artist acts like a spoiled entitled jerk. The patron doesn't have to explain to the artist why they don't want something. They could've just said no thanks. No explanation required. Welcome to adult life.

      @@MonsterKidCory he could be the master in the field, I don't care. If Disney doesn't want to use a design, they don't have to, simple as that! His post on social media makes him look like a whiny little bitch !
