The decision to stop when you were cold and wet, even though you were only 100 miles from home, was an excellent decision. The desire to "just get home" is always strong in situations like that, and making the better decision not to go for safety is always a tough one. Aviation folks go through the same decision process on a regular basis.

I agree. When I rode my bike back from west Texas to the east coast in two days I just wanted to get home. I was trying to stay in front of thunderstorms, my phone wouldn't work and it was getting dark. I was three hours from home and decided to just check into a hotel and let the storms pass me by. I didn't want to drive at night and hit a deer or something.

It is cold, and your face in the shots on the way says miserable, and everything hurts and screams BUT on the inside you feel you are happy and you feel you are alive. Something no one who did a long haul on the motorcycle will ever understand. Keep up!

Doodle !!!!! first of all welcome home. Girl you are soooo tough. Your drive and determination are so inspiring. That rain and bad weather would have made most throw in the towel. Being cold and wet is one of the worst feelings and can really drain you mentally but you adjusted your route adapted to the circumstances and pushed through. You are mentally and physically a super hero. I am so glad that you had such an amazing trip and all that you experienced and accomplished.
Thank you for all of the amazing videos. You Miss Doodle are a ROCK STAR !!!!

Mostly what I have found is people who want to tell you you shouldn’t be doing something, it’s because it makes them confront themselves about their own resilience and persistence to get the life they want by pushing through perceived limitations. . Thank you for always sharing he honest experience and the learning that comes from it!

Carolyn, I'm recently back from a tour that featured torrential rain, ride same bike, same lid...
You can get pinlock visors for the X4.
With the peak fitted it's still quieter than my Shoei Neotec 2.
I use the Evotech-Performance mount for phone, which sits behind the screen. Works well, though you do need to block the windshield hole in terrible weather (evotech should really supply a plastic moulded weather shield).

Quadlock "tip": if you tip it forward further so that you see your own (dark) outline instead of the bright sky, it's easier to read. One of the Quadlock extensions will help with that. Oh, and the wireless charger module is also waterproof.

4:06 " both my gloves have water inside them ..." I know that discomfort, especially when the wind chill starts to make them fingers freeze.
I travel with several gloves in my panniers, usually wearing Alpinestars summer gloves (they have such great tactility and fidelity compared to most motorcycling gloves) but have some nice Alpinestars Drystars for wet weather riding. One trick I learned but haven't implemented yet, but I bought them, is to have a pair of kayaking gloves for rainy weather when your rain gloves can't cope.
I loved the "i'm only 740 miles from home" comment. You've become a sensei at the long distance stuff. I abuse the hair dryer when I get to the hotel. First thing I do is shower and wash my clothes and hang them up. I try to stick to synthetics because they dry more quickly than cottons. Rig a way for the hair dryer to blow at them and leave it on until it trips. If the boots are wet, especially if they got wet inside, I take out the insole and just go at them with the hair dryer. I'll often get some fast food to go just so I can monitor the shoe and clothes drying situation. Noise cancelling ear buds and netflix, hair dryer working over time.
In the morning I'll zap the boots again with the hair dryer before I go down to get breakfast, then once again after before I get ready to take off. If they're still damp, the wind will dry them off and i'll have dry socks on anyway.

Doodle, you are an amazing inspiration to all of us! Just love watching your adventures. These miles are experience and times you’ll cherish forever! In 2007 I road from my home (at that time) in Maryland to GA. Then on the trip back, ran into the worse rain I think I’ve been through in 35 plus years of riding. Unfortunately, my location had no available places to stay. And only a couple of closed gas stations to hide and get cover from the rain. I wished I would have been able to bunk for the night, but it wasn’t happening. I forced myself to finish the trip. Between the rain, road closures and time of day, the normal 9.5 hour trip took me 16. I was exhausted. Three months later, made the trip back to GA and have stayed…. Glad you made it safe. God bless! See you on road. Keep scootin’

Good on you for making the decision to take a hotel even though you were only 100 miles from home. Too often we push too far, and in your circumstances, being cold and wet can lead to some really bad decisions. Hope that you enjoyed your cross-country trip as much as I've enjoyed watching your videos!

My Indian Scout Bobber 20, caught some heavy to nominal rain. Then the next day, the LED information gauge, started to turn on and off, then a few days later, decided to completely NOT turn "ON" at all. Positive thing is, I was told my bikes warranty will cover the repair to the strange anomaly. Great adventure! I hope to be able to travel cross country as well. I"ve ridden in all parts of our country, but never a full cross country trip and back. Family and work kept that as a bucket list. Now retired (early) and the family stuff is settled it's time. 2024 is going to be the bucket list trip around the 4 corners, sort of, of the country. I have a new gen Gold Wing and a Super Tenere 1200, trying to decide which to use on this trip. Tenere is the one I ride the most, has hard bags and all the other necessary items as well. The Wing just needs gas to go! Being retired means stopping whenever and wherever for as long as I want. It means waiting out the worst weather instead of character building riding; had enough of that over the years. I'm about to do 6 weeks in southern Utah and down to Hill Country in Texas, taking the toyhauler and bike this trip. I enjoy my own bed and shower in the RV for these shorter trips. Glad I started a savings account for several decades and funded it over time so these trips are financially possible now. Great trip you had and ride safe out there.

You go girl! You are a smart hero (heroine)!
I did the opposite though! Got my foot caught between the ground and mount for my dog’s sidecar and broke my ankle badly. GoldWing was just fine though! EMTs advised me to get treated at home and NOT locally. Police were SUPER cool! I literally ‘hopped’ onto my 900 lb behemoth and rode 125 miles home at night, rolling in at 03:00. I stopped to rest. Wound up with two screws in my ankle, 2 weeks in the hospital, and 3 months of physical therapy and now as good as ever. Texas Side Cars in Donie, Texas came 400 miles to pick up my rig, hauled it back and fabricated a first class barrier so it couldn’t happen again, then trailered it all the way back to me near Fort Smith Arkansas at no cost to me whatsoever. It is darned near impossible to find people like that these days. All I have to do is put my dog’s safety harness on her and say “Go in!” and she runs and jumps in and waits patiently for me to get her tethered and eye and hearing protection on.
But a GoldWing is too big for me too at 900lbs and me at 5’8” and 148 lbs as of today. I’ll look for something bigger next time. Oh yeah, and I’m 72 years old and my dog and I are leaving on a 4,000 mile, 4 month long adventure in a couple of weeks. I tried to find a companion but those my age were all worn out and those young enough to keep up were tied down to kids, jobs, school, or husbands, and husbands don’t generally lend their wives out for such travels even with a solemn promise to return them! Lol!
Take a GoldWing DCT for a test ride. I have no doubt you can handle one. I was a bit intimidated at first, but I got over that. You may just become a convert! And if you know of an appropriate woman looking for someone to ride along with or two-up with, it’s probably too close for this trip (leaving 9 April, return mid August), but next spring I plan to head north and west. My dog and I travel solo, but a companion would be welcome.

Congrats on making an epic solo adventure. I've been there plenty of times, even rode in a Tropical Storm in Florida and Southern Georgia. Sometimes you push thru and sometimes you gotta know when to say when and stop for the night and let it pass. Anyways, newspaper crumpled up and shoved on wet boots does wonders to dry them out. Change it out a couple times over night and they'll be much drier in the morning.

Well done! I can relate to those cold wet riding days.

Such a rough ride and weather! You definitely made the right decisions, to adjust your route and stay safe when you did.
I totally noticed your comment about 'meeting friends' when asked if you were travelling alone. I am going to remember to remember to say this, as a solo rider we are at risk unfortunately.
    Ride safe, LJ

What an adventure! Well done. Such an achievement and be proud of yourself! This sort of personal challenge is something I will probably never do, despite wanting to. I live in England and would love to ride around the UK upto Scotland. Perhaps one day. But the journey wouldn't be as big as your's across the U.S!

Hey Doodle! Thanks for the video! I got that the faux sheep wasn't fluffy but I didn't get the brand of your seat bubble thingie.

Great video. I recently flew out to Texas, purchased a 901 Expedition and rode it back to SW Florida. I stopped at the two Buc-ees you showed in a previous video and yeah I was shocked there wasn't a single place to sit 👎, that's why I love the busy bee. While in TX I was praying for rain, no luck 110 degrees in the shade. Some slight rain on I 10 in Fl and monsoon rains in Bushnell fl, I too have the Arai XD4 with a pinlock and it was fabulous, no problems at all. You should try one next outing. 😎

You have more resilience and determination than most people I know! Stopping to dry off and warm up (and rest) when you were only 100 miles from home, was a very smart decision. Jonakers704 talked about a "decision process" used in aviation, and scuba divers use the same process. Congratulations on another successful trip!

That was an amazing adventure! I’m still at the point where a few sprinkles scare me😅 Also, those “that bike is too big for you” people can kick rocks.

My hat is off to you, so many refuse to ride in the rain. Been on a few rainy rides and when we ride we pack for rain, one thing we do pack is surgical gloves to at least have dry hands in wet gloves. Had to fog before and found rainex works with sheening off rain.
