Because of this interview with the brilliant 94-year-old Professor Crawford, I have just finished reading all 385 pages of "The Shrinking Brain." As the author of "Inside the Dementia Epidemic: A Daughter's Memoir" (2012), I wish I and my mother had known about the importance of eating DHA-rich fish and seafood at least several times a week; perhaps that essential brain food could have helped her avoid cognitive impairment. At least now, eating sardines, canned wild-caught salmon, or mackerel for lunch routinely Monday through Friday, I have the opportunity at age 59 to bolster my own brain health. Let's hope that experts in nutrition, public health and ocean farming will listen to the authors' recommendations. Thank you to Dr. Crawford, his co-author David Marsh, and Dr. Pugh, along with her colleagues in quantum biology who have been extolling the virtues of DHA for some time.

Dr. Crawford is amazing. Perfectly sharp at 94, when many 20,30,40-year-olds can't put together a proper sentence or remember what they did a day ago. Dr. Crawford has stated that he eats fish/seafood almost every day and tuna sashimi once a week.

About chicken eggs, I used to have a great local source. The farmer would graze cows. Then let the manure sit for several days. When the fly eggs had hatched into maggots, he'd move in the bus converted into a chicken coop. Those eggs had to have been full of DHA. But sadly, he retired and none of his children wanted to take over the business.

Thought provoking! I live in the rain forest of the Pacific Northwest US, where first peoples here have such intense need driving them to consume, and steward, migratory salmon and lamprey. So much wisdom seems inherent in how they prehistorically lived in this land, with many millennia of use and conservation. I have been fascinated by trying to understand the marine proximity resource environment benefits compared to the risk/benefits of when some first moved inland perhaps 20 to 25 thousand years ago. And, what quantum biology influences were at play. DHA/EPA now takes on even more importance in my mind. It would be interesting to get Jack's ideas around this prehistoric migration to interior lands, and changes in latitude/light/DHA/D3/iodine/grounding shift of brain mitochondrial function support issues. Thanks both of you!

All this infomaiton about DHA and mineral deficiencies seems to be restricted to the context of populations consuming grain and potato heavy diets, and therefore would require very nutritionally rich foods to compensate. Surely, meat focused diets don't have this issue. I consume seafood whenever I feel like it. Maybe once every few weeks I'll splurge on some oysters, or make some salmon sashimi. Do you think someone eating an animal based diet needs to be concerned about the overall DHA content of their diet? Or will the trace amounts found in all the fat they tend to consume add up to be sufficient?
