    Yes, the ASCC was a relay box. This was early in the war, and yes, it was mainly for fire control calculations. Sure, the Navy already had analog computers for this, but they were very expensive and finicky. The idea that a calculating machine that didn't depend on periodic high-precision calibration in order to its job, was compelling. Turns out, for good reason.

  • @CARLiCON
    @CARLiCON 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

    IBM Automatic Sequence Controlled Calculator (ASCC), was aka Harvard Mark I. From Wiki: "The ASCC was built from switches, relays, rotating shafts, and clutches. It used 765,000 electromechanical components and hundreds of miles of wire, comprising a volume of 816 cubic feet (23 m3) - 51 feet (16 m) in length, 8 feet (2.4 m) in height, and 2 feet (0.61 m) deep. It weighed about 9,445 pounds (4.7 short tons; 4.3 t).[8] The basic calculating units had to be synchronized and powered mechanically, so they were operated by a 50-foot (15 m) drive shaft coupled to a 5 horsepower (3.7 kW) electric motor, which served as the main power source and system clock. The enclosure for the Mark I was designed by futuristic American industrial designer Norman Bel Geddes"

    Human drone pilots are restricted because a few idiots ruined it for everyone else. I actually had an off-duty cop flying one over my back yard, harassing me while i was working, thinking it was funny. After some research I found out he could have been arrested, especially since it was a police drone.

    • @BrightBlueJim
      @BrightBlueJim 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      No. That's the excuse that Amazon's lobbyists used to steal the airspace below 400' AGL from the public. As you say, the cop who harassed you was already breaking the law, so this is not a valid excuse for additional regulation. Bottom line is, corporate users who will pay huge dollar amounts for licenses and permits bought that airspace out from under us. Or out from above us, I guess. Sure, some people were using drones to look in bedroom windows, and that's a bad thing. But what's to keep businesses operating drone fleets from also infringing on our privacy? We already know that Google and Facebook and many others sell personal information about their users to whoever will pay for it. What's to keep Amazon and other retailers from doing the same with aerial data?

      yep, and so did the consistent reminder to the public, how 'scary' drones are. Even though (outside of warfare), there has never been a death caused by a drone or quadcopter. Pretty big coincidence, if lobbyists convinced congress to force the FAA to add regulations just at the time that Amazon & other delivery interests were seeking to stake their claim of what has been open airspace 🤬

    Being an R/C guy, the FAA and it's relatively new R/C regulations imposed on the hobby is the baby step to overseeing this stuff - plus, imo, it's a money maker - they will eventually describe what routes and altitudes these various drones will be allowed to fly in and those "routes" will be paid for by these corporations - the government not only wants to regulate the issues Fran is speaking to, but they want to "cash in" as well. Currently, if I don't fly my R/C airplane at a designated flying field, which can only be designated by the FAA called a FRIA, then I'm obligated to install a tracking device into whatever plane I'm flying, called a "Remote ID" - that's here now - if a person buys a new drone at Walmart, for example, and if it's of a certain size, it will already be equipped with a remote ID - which of course gives the FAA or it's agencies the ability to track R/C controlled aircraft of any type - - all under the guise of safety, which isn't untruthful, but imo, it's more about the money and again, the baby steps into regulating this stuff - - I have to now pay the FAA to obtain a license to fly my hobby airplane, something unthinkable 10 years ago - these hard line regulations are coming and Fran is sooo correct - how come these corporations can currently ignore the rules the rest of us are now obligated to follow? The FAA, or the government wants to change all that - - we'll all be regulated - - - yeah, great, no easy answer as we know the government can't do anything very well - without the AMA's (Academy of Model Aeronautics) lobbying efforts, FRIA's wouldn't currently exist, big thank you to them - again, those areas don't require a Remote ID device - but otherwise, it's unlawful to fly any type of model aircraft of a certain weight size without a Remote ID devise and that rule supposedly will be enforced starting in the middle of March of 2024.

    Hi Fran. Speaking of Apollo 13. I recently discovered 'Spacewalker: Age of Pioneers'' on TH-cam, a Russian made film (2021) depicting the first EVA of Alexei Leonov - (unfortunately under the title of 'The Martian' ). But I thought the film was remarkable. If you, or anyone, enjoy 'pure' cinema I recommend it (by pure I mean the upload doesn't have subtitles). I thought it exceeded 'First Man' (I didn't think Ryan Gosling embodied Armstrong). And Spacewalker doesn't have anyone tobacco smoking. The Wikipedia entry for the film is good for background. Thanks, like your channel.

    UA's and stuff. "The FAA is encouraging innovation and working with industry, state, local and tribal governments to realize the benefits of drones and inform future rules and regulations."
    For me it's obvious to see the difference between autonomous system vs. hobbyist RC pilot with no ATC communication. By hobbyist i mean the type of operations, not the skills.
    Package delivery operations have different regulations, different certifications, see FAA / UAS / Advanced Operations / Package Delivery by Drone (Part 135).
    Like another comment points out, money is one thing. Maybe by squeezing the limits of private hobby there's more room for commercial operations. On the other hand, the regulations also allow for private flying. It would be easier to just rule that no hobby flying, it does not benefit anyone, but luckily home RC pilots are kept alive, for some reason.

    Thank you for mentioning RC Model/Drone regulation. As someone who got into FPV earlier this year, not only is this hobby over-regulated. The FAA treats every single craft like a store-bought photo drone, and most of these regulations are in place because commercial operators like Amazon keep lobbying for them.
    I have home built 1s tiny-whoops/toothpicks that weigh less than 50g w/ batteries, and are small enough to fit in the palm of your hand.
    These models are designed to be people/pet safe. I've been hit by one at full speed and at worst it's a mild annoyance that's more likely to burn out a motor or ESC, than hurt you.
    Should someone flying one of these things 20ft in the air in their back yard really be beholden to FAA No-Fly Zones? Don't even get me started on the situational awareness provided by FPV vs line of sight.

    The whole reason that new regulations requiring registration of privately-flown model aircraft over 250 grams have become a thing over the last few years, is that corporations like Amazon wanted to have free rein over the airspace below 400 ft. AGL, which was already closed to manned aircraft except near airports. Just as the FAA saw how much money it could collect by auctioning off spectrum already in use by UHF TV broadcasting and unlicensed spectrum for services like wireless microphones, to wireless data (i.e., phone) providers, the FAA must have gotten dollar signs in its eyes dreaming about the permits it could sell to corporate drone operators, and proceeded to pretty much obliterate the entire model airplane hobby and small-business drone operators. Sorry kids, can't play here anymore; Amazon wants to get richer.

    Your drone operation only benefits you. Commercial delivery services will benefit 100s of thousands or millions of people. These companies will be restricted. There will be rules and laws created to govern their actions/activities/maintenance/testing/standards etc.. This is just like amateur radio vs commercial radio. Or private aircraft vs. commercial aircraft. On the amateur/private side of these things, they must allow for the lowest common denominator. You might be a great, conscientious and reliable pilot, but since you are a private individual operator, if they allowed you to fly over Philly, they'd have to let everybody fly over as well. In your own words, what could go wrong?

    They estimate a human mind can do an exaflop of operations a second... we're getting close. In light of the upset at Open AI with firing Sam Altman, 600 employees threatening to quit, and the stir about a potential AI breakthrough that caused the firing... I really truly believe humans don't know what's about to take place. It's going to be something to behold, whether we end up winning or losing because of this new AI it will change humanity forever. Throw in computers that can do as many calculations as a human? Just like that, we could birth something more mentally capable than we can comprehend.

    Speaking of computers, I just watched Hidden Figures. That's quite a nice one despite a bunch of discrepancies. The IBM and Dorothy Vaughan who got it going against all odds, truly impressive!
    Gotta watch For All Mankind at last. Plot overviews look interesting. Personally, I find the concept of multiverse and alternative timelines fascinating. To think there's an infinite number of possibilities hypothetically co-existing... one of them might be me buying out whole stocks of Western Electric 300B tubes!
    Europe, eh? It depends. Culture differs among countries, I bet he wouldn't be bothered too much in some backward country like mine where people learned Russian instead of English, unless propaganda spouted his name like it did with Gagarin or Hermaszewski. If he came to the UK though, he wouldn't have an easy life.
    Do not stare Turkey in the eye! Erdogan ain't gonna like it.
    It is damn important to regulate the issue of end-of-life / decommissioning of satellites; the more launches, the more junk ends up there. SpaceX currently owns more than half of satellites in the orbit and while I truly appreciate the company for re-usable launch vehicle technology, the laissez-faire Elongated Muskrat will be against regulation and that's wrong. It's just "Clean Up Your Space!" but a selfish brat won't do that, so someone else has to step in.

    Surprised Elon hasn’t built a satellite removal spacecraft yet. He could charge these companies to go into space and capture outdated satellites and bring them back to be scrapped/recycled.

    If ‘ nominating’ people to go to Mars ever did become a thing I’d like to nominate Donald Trump. Not only because he’s a fit but also because he would blend in with the orange rocky landscape. Hopefully it would be a one way ticket, I wouldn’t want him coming back claiming that he now owns the entire ‘world’…..of Mars!…… with a tower on it……..and corrupt aliens…….oh and a golf course that only he is allowed to be a member of.

    I’ll answer the WHY.
    …because, regardless of how long it takes, mankind’s uselessness (limited abilities) will be usurped by “all things science/math/technology”.
    Human freedom is easily suspendable.
