Not sure when you checked for the replacement springs but I bought mine for around 12. I ended up buying the one that I needed only to misplace it and so ordered again figuring that the original would show up sooner if not later but so far it hasn't. Best case it's put in that safe place no one can find for years and worse case is it got thrown out by mistake some how or the cat thought it was a toy and it's lost for good under a piece of furniture that never gets moved. I'm off to fix it right tomorrow though. Your fix is definitely an alternative move say if a spring breaks again and I need a quick fix on the road. Kinda like duct tape very useful those cloths pins.
