- You see 14 hours-timelapse of sewing a mail glove from scratch. I'm using a stitching awl to pierce the holes into the goat leather before sewing the pieces with a saddle stitch.

I'm trying to justify to myself and those around me why every man should have a mail shirt hanging in the closet:
• For one, if I wear it when jogging, I'll get resistance training.
• If for some reason there's trouble about, it's better than nothing, even if that never happens.
• It's a great ice breaker in social conversations. "Nice Italian suit. Thank you, sir, but may I ask, what is this shirt?" "This? It's norman style. It's a bit out of fashion and heavy on the shoulders, but it got great ventilation."

You can try to slow it down to 0.25 speed. Some things might be clearer.

Wonderful, I am making several chain mail at the same time, I am experimenting with the rivet, with the flat without riveting, and honestly, even though it is riveted, I prefer the flat rings, I have been invested for many hours and my wife makes me angry ... .... The gloves have inspired me and I will propose to make some. A strong greeting from the Canary Islands here I am the only rare that makes chain mail.

That's good to hear. There is a lot more to show. Just need to turn on the camera more often. I haven't stacked rings as in building a card house, but I did make 6in1- weaves and therelike.
@@Ironskin noice... but i forgot to mention something, and am sorry. by "stacking" the links, what i actually meant is to double or triple the links in one area... I was also wondering if that would make the maille stronger...

How long does it actually totals to make a whole bodysuit of armor I wander how long it would take people in medieval times to suit up an Army of men
I love your videos, found one, and then started watching them from the beginning. This video is a few years old now, and you may have addressed this question in videos that i haven't binge watched yet. But with 3D printing technology, would modern printed mail be equal to or stronger than traditional mail? I'm thinking 3D metal or carbon fiber mail of varying link diameters and density depending upon the movement required for joint articulation. I'm also thinking about real world use not just LARP or Cosplay since the world is steadily becoming more dangerous.

looks good but why the fingers arent fully covered? i mean one good strike and 2-3 fingers are gone if there is nothing to defend it
When you grab a weapon, the fingers a pointing towards you. It's not very exposed. One can get away with that area not being covered.

That is goat leather of about 1.2mm strength.

Hi, I got a question: do you know of any sources for blackened maille pre 16th century? I want to start a new coif project and am concidering wich rings to buy. I will probably go for regular ones, but blackened maille intrigues me.
I read about a blackened piece of mail from Spain. It was not perfectly clear whether the blackening actually happened during the lifetime - or perhaps it was some process that happened to the mail when it was buried in the earth.
How many years to make a glove ?
What kind of stitch did you use to attach the maille?
I have no idea how it's named. I do something like loops - returning to the same hole where I started or at least close to it.

Do you know if there is any historical presence for this type of glove pattern? also, do you know where I can find a reference for it as it's kind of hard to make out of the video with the fast pace editing?
I want to make my own medieval gloves but I find it hard to find any historical references.
Hi, there is the Winchester Bibel and the Biblia Sacra - both 12th-century manuscripts. Arguably the shape of mine must not necessarily match the depictions a hundred percent. There is also at least one 14th-century source, that I currently don't remember. Perhaps you find more videos on making full gloves and then cut off the tips.

Hi im new subscriber from Bosnia and Herzegovina , can you tell me how do you remove rust from the metal wire , and how do you prevent it from forming new rust , and can i ask you can i make chainmail from 3mm wyre and what diameter of rings should i use for that thickness(in mm. ) .or what is the thickness of wyre and what diameter do you prefer 😁. Please , and btw , awesome job you are doing on this videos .
Hey, thank you for the positive feedback! To remove rust, you can use vinegar plus sand and rub it. Alternatively use modern rust remover and gun oils. Just always wash off salty sweat and store the mail at a dry place. 3mm is a bit strong. I would make 14 mm rings, but that's insanely big. Rather make 8mm rings with 1.4 mm wire.
Honestly I want to take my every day wear denim coat and just cover it in riveted mail in patches
Have you ever used stainless steel wire for mail?
:D I only used stainless for butted rings. It is wearing out the tools for riveted rings.
Why are the fingers so short?
Flexibility, if the fingers would be fully covered in male they'd be very stiff and just not movable
We know this style from 12th-century depictions. Perhaps the finger parts were even shorter. In my case the customer wanted it to have better control of the reins during riding. @benus: You're right it is a bit stiffer. But full mail gloves are also possible if one makes enough room for the fingers to move.
Shadiversity should get first dibs at severing a hand.
So that's not real chain mail, it's decorative costume mail randomly sown onto a leather glove. Real chainmail has the rings securely interlocked everywhere and closed with rivets so they cannot be pryed open with a knife.
