    MC Stu: _"I like to go fast - if you can't get to the bad guys, you can't shoot them."_
    Interestingly, there's another bonus to going fast - you get Defense Rating the faster your ship is going. More Defense Rating causes more attacks to miss you (many caveats apply!), which drastically reduces how much damage you wind up taking.
    Also, there's a few different traits that give you bonuses the faster you go, like the Science Pilot Warbird's "Subwarp Sheath", which gives you an Armor Penetration bonus based on your current speed.
    Based on what I've been reading, this manifests *strongly* in PvP, where ships are built to kill, but it also applies to all levels of PvE combat as well.
    Also: I *love* Deuterium-stabilized Warp Cores on Energy Weapon builds. It's worth pointing out the the [ANY -> ANY] modifier can be pretty important. On your build, you have some stuff that technically counts as Exotic damage and is thus boosted by Auxiliary power, thus why your [W -> A] modifier is good. Generally, on non-Science builds, I prefer [W -> E], so that I have a bit better speed and maneuverability. [ANY -> S] is IMO the least useful modifier, as shields tend to drop pretty frequently even in normal PvE combat, unless you're going for a hardcore tanking build where your shields really, really matter.

      You mentioned Armor Pen -- which both based on my sales on the exchange , and what I see on builds on STObuilds reddit -- seems to have fallen out of favor .
      Maybe it was nerfed ? I dunno .
      But Dem (damage) seems to be king now .... . It's mildly ironic since it was my first and favorite Mod since forever , even before Acc became a PVP favorite and CritD became a PVE thing for a long while .

    I discovered your channel last week and it’s been real helpful in understanding what’s going on in STO as a beginner. I’ve only been playing for 3 weeks and feel like my ships are a lot better organized now thanks to some of these videos. It’s still confusing with the sheer amount of options to slot in ships and how they interconnect with each other, but it’s slowly starting to make sense.

    Definitely a lot of good tips and points in this video. Definite thumbs up.
    But it wouldn't be me if I didn't toss my $0.02 in. Hope it's not too intrusive.
    There are several things to consider when you build. The first, for me, is budget. Whether that is entirely F2P with no Zen/Lobi, Mid-Tier with some Zen/Lobi, or High-End where money is no issue and you have access to virtually any resource. That will majorly inform your build.
    The next consideration is what difficulty you intend to play at. The higher the difficulty, the less room you have for non-optimized builds.
    Third on my list is how you intend to play. Are you solo running missions and patrols with the occasional TFO, you living the PUG Life, or do you meet up with a whole team of friends. Maybe you want to join the PvP community and test your build against other live players.
    After all that, then you can look at how you want your build to fit in. There are two conflicting axioms in the STO community; 1. Kill them before they kill you and 2. You can't DPS if you're dead.
    The first implies that DPS output is the single most important aspect of the game. The second accepts that, alongside DPS, you have to build for survival.
    In the latter case, whether you run Solo/Pugs or alongside a dedicated Tank matters more than the first. You should always be trying for DPS. Building for Survival (or relying on a Tank to hold Threat) is the real decision.
    That seems like a lot, but that's really the quick part. Deciding the "what" and "how" are the tricky questions. That's a lot more complex than I can fit into the tail end of a TH-cam comment.

    First off....let me say THANK YOU! When you create a video based on "Budget builds" you actually include those of us that might not be in a fleet or try to spend money. A lot of people are not and don't respectively, so adding that little bit of info helps those of us that aren't a part of that game aspect. I watched the video where you named off a couple of fleets, so that's very much appreciated as well. I do have a question and would love to have it answered in a video if possible but a short explanation suffices as well...and it has to do with the ship traits.
    I see A LOT of players (content creators) putting DPS (crit chance/crit severirity) into the builds but not much in the way of survivability. If I can't survive a fight etc, etc....I'm sure you have heard it or even thought it. But what is the difference other than the obvious. Is there a better way of thinking towards that type of build? I can understand if you are running a tank obviously you want survivability and the flip side if you are escort/marauder you want high DPS. I play big ships but they do tend to be slow. I played the game when it came out and quit for a few years, but have recently come back over the last year as it is easy to jump in and out of easily enough if I have the time. I realize it's a lot to read and appreciate the time (if you have a few minutes) to see where I might be making mistakes.

    I know my ship is built wrong in STO (PS4), only just started about 3-4 weeks ago and just hit 65 a few days ago, been focusing on doing the events, was barely able to get the Temer Alliance Raider (T6) so I am using that and just finished getting 5 Fleet antiproton beam arrays to focus damage type so I can boost to the max with Tac consoles and it's universal it came with, even grabbed the crystalline absorption matrix to boost further, build is far from perfect, but it'll get me through missions, until I get better consoles & ship. I am wanting to build a tanky, beam focused build, one where I can just drop into a large-ish group of enemies (pve) and not die while still dishing out enough damage to deal with quickly

    • @MCStu
      @MCStu  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ya this methodology will work on that layout. In most cases for DPS builds I priorities crit consoles, traits and Boffs..... over just about everything else. Every little bit adds up. Just remember it your still working on higher gear and traits to make sure in are balancing your survivability as well (resistance)

  • @BushPiG0
    @BushPiG0 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    12:26 Isn't that 2.5% per beam so if you have 4 beams thats a 10% proc chance which is massive considering your beams fire rate. If i mouse over all my beams when this 2 piece is fitted omega weapons affects every beam. So its not just 2.5%. As far as i can tell.

    • @MCStu
      @MCStu  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The rate doesn't stack, it is 2.5 per firing cycle per beam. So a full cycle of all your weapons does workout to be higher then 2.5 but it is not 10% per full cycle.

    I'm an old player (since 2010) who has been active on and off depending on my time. I've always kept fire at will to defend against fighters and the webs from the Tholians, because it's quick efficient and easy, but I also have beam overload for the damage. Is there something better that I can do?

  • @Raussl
    @Raussl 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    WTF, no Priors World Elite Defence Satelite console and DOMINO? Well, makes you realize that those free consoles really were worth doing the dailies back then. Also raises my eyebrows about how OP certain unique consoles actually are.
    And quite frankly, I will never understand why Cryptic lets you slot 4, 5 even 6 Fleet Tac consoles...it is really difficult to put any other console into those slots, because not many consoles actually beat them in raw DPS.

      We have done some testing yes hybrid skill tree builds and good traits mean u can use almost any career ship however a tactical career character always stacks more dps in a tactical career ship or a hybrid ship like a battlecruiser or dreadnought. A science in a science ship generates more shield regeneration and capacity just like a engineer in a cruiser generates more hull tanking and higher power levels u can increase Damage,Hull tanking & shields tanking for all careers with the right skill tree,traits and gear for your character and ship. We have run pvp and advanced tfo testing so far correct career t5-t6 ships were used & performed better. We are working on final testing for elite tfo's as a group we wanna crack it and share it. Also other than ship thing u gave good advice Stu :)

    Stu, I greatly appreciate the videos but if you'd accept a bit of constructive criticism my God they can be hard to follow.
    Half the time you don't even mention the name of the console or if you do it's at the end or somewhere in the middle of talking about what it is and what it does.
    You spend a lot of time qualifying specific circumstances which is fine but what would be a huge, huge help is some structure.
    First, mention the name of the console. Second tell us where to get it, then start talking about what it is and why you'd use it, and then finally at the very end talk about the exceptions or situations that might influence it's use.
    At the moment you flip around so much and half the time I have to forgo listening on the cell phone and go to the main computer to research whatever console it is to figure out the name or where I get it from which honestly are two of the biggest questions most of us have
