When Sharpe meets Napoleon in person for the first time in Sharpe's Devil after Waterloo and during his exile at St. Helena, Napoleon actually references that Calvert mentioned Sharpe a few times and he remembered that Sharpe was involved in this incident. He then went on to tell Sharpe that he would have likely been promoted to Brigadier General by Waterloo or even before that if he had fought for him.

Very likely, Napoleon gave exactly zero fucks about what was proper. He promoted based on merit and ability, even if he wasn't always correct.

I’m actually really glad Calvert doesn’t hold any kind of personal grudge or vice towards Sharpe. He actually respects him as a fellow soldier and as a man. If they were in the same side, they’d be the best of friends.

@@julianmhall The French Revolution meant someone like Calvert had fewer hurdles to overcome - many of the names engraved on the Arc du Triomphe would have remained NCOs if it had never happened. Could've been a spy tbh, even soldiers on the battlefield would've been like "who the fuck is this guy?" Even if he says what he really is "Major Duco" or I have important documents.
But seriously he led and turned alot of twisted plans and schemes to get Sharpe dead or ended up somewhere else. Especially when framing him 3 times, the death of the Spanish noble, the death of Dragoon officer (both murdered) and stealing Napoleon's treasure.

Sharpe in the book was fond of slicing across in a backhanded blow like a tennis player taking the eyes out of people he fought. That would be a good way to drop ducos. He could then slowly advance on the blinded and screaming foe. Might even shout something to him as stands over him before ramming his sword down into Ducos face ending him. Or he could just unscrew and throw his swords pommel at Ducos. Either way is equally devastating

Much like Sharpe they are very silimar just coming from different places. Hornblower was not born in the gutter like Sharpe but nor was he born into wealth and they both had to earn they way in life. which is the message i take from them both if you want something you have to work for it.
