you need to listen to the whole trilogy! "Cardigan" is Betty's perspective on the situation, "August" is the perspective of the girl James was cheating on Betty with. and the song "Betty" is of course James' apology to Betty. it's a really cool concept and all the songs are beautifully written and make perfect sense together. i think you would enjoy getting the full picture, her storytelling is amazing
Thank you! I didn't know about the trilogy I don't know what the order is but I think Cardigan should be next. ❤️❤️
Yes 🙌 The folklore Trilogy👏 I think Cardigan is a good choice for next reaction and then August. Great breakdown.☺️☺️
@@BemusingBill Cardigan has a beautiful music video to it also. 😊
@@Koreankimmie I agree! ❤❤
This is part of a trilogy of Betty, James and Augustine. Betty & James were a couple. He had a summer fling with Augustine and then regretted it. Augustine genuinely cared for James. Cardigan is Betty’s perspective, years later. August is Augustine’s perspective, and Betty is James’ perspective.
#justiceforaugustine
Thank you, my friend! Cardigan will be next! ❤️
names: Taylor is friends with Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively, and they never tell the media the names of their children. Their oldest daughter is James, next is Inez, and the youngest (at the time) was unknown --- until Taylor dropped this song. The three song trilogy (Cardigan, August, Betty) is called "the teenage love triangle" but it is fiction. Each song is from a different perspective; and the music production changes with each point of view: Cardigan is sort of indie, a piano song (music by Aaron Dessner); August is pop synths (with Jack Antonoff); and Betty is country runs, probably pretty much Taylor's choice.
F Bombs --- Taylor never recorded them until folklore and Evermore in 2020; I think she later said the year deserved them. She recorded a "clean version" for country radio and streaming for those who object to it; she performed it live at the ACM Awards (with a harmonica player -- sort of a Dylan sound to it), and had to smile whenever she used the substitute lyrics.
Thanks for the info, my friend! The F bomb is sometimes the only word that makes sense when telling a story. I don't like it's overuse like it's a period at the end of every sentence but when used right it conveys the feeling and emotion better than any other synonym. I'm not surprised there is a radio-friendly version, but the original version is usually better. ❤️
Blake Lively just had baby #4 in 2023. Another girl. I don’t know if they’ve announced her name or not, but Ryan Reynolds joked that they just wait for Taylor to drop a song with the baby’s name in it so they know what to name her.😂
I always think laughing, that if he really wants her back, he maybe shouldn't call her friends stupid... 😂😂
August is my favourite of this trilogy. ❤
That's a very good point! 😂 I'll be doing Cardigan next followed by August. Thanks, buddy! ❤️
@@BemusingBill Looking forward to both!! As I said elsewhere, the MV to Cardigan is very beautiful. 🤗🤗
@@thomasdworak2030 Thank you! Cardigan is definitely next!
“What do you guys think?” I think you need to do a double review of Cardigan and August to finish the “story” with us. 🙏🏻🙏🏻
I think you are absolutely right! ❤️
💯😍😍😍
The kids she mentions in her song had no idea just how famous their auntie Taylor is haha.
Maybe, but when mom and dad are also famous and likely everyone they hang out with, I think those kids might have some idea (more so when they get older and it hits them!). I bet she's their favorite aunt, though!! ❤️
It was so fun to hear you identify all the layers and THEN listen to the interview! Like others are suggesting, you should definitely listen to Cardigan and August (the Long Pond versions and interviews) because together, the three songs are about the same
love triangle from 3 different perspectives. And “William Bowery” is a pen name for Joe Alwyn, Taylor’s romantic partner of six and a half years.
Thank you, my friend! I'm grateful there was an interview because I definitely would have gotten it wrong! 😂
Cardigan is next! ❤️
I love your reactions and my fellow swifties have already informed u about the trilogy.
But i just had to go on here and say, good shout out to paul simon 💜 as someone who just turned 30 i gotta love when young people get informed about legends 👏🏻 my mom and grandparents made sure i knew all music and i hope everyone can get to know legends like those
Thank you, Bella! I love that too! I know a few people your age that were raised by music lovers and they are into classic rock/pop as well as the new stuff. I love all music and good music is good music whether it's 1000 years old or 1 hour old.
I love watching the reactions from young rappers when they listen to old rock tunes, and they are blown away! ❤️Oh, and happy belated birthday!
I love how you break down Taylor’s songs! You reading her lyrics sends me every time. I would listen to you read pretty much anything
Thank you, my friend! ❤❤
James, Inez, and Betty are Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively's daughters, Ryan and Blake had a baby the fall before and had not released her name yet, this song was the way they announced her name, Betty. They had a 4th child quite a while ago, and supposedly call the child Obi.
I hear that the song Robin is for the new baby.
@@jbaalman i think it's for Aaron Dessner's baby son whose name is Robin
@@selma8184 everyone says that, but I’ve been saying, she has only used Blake’s children in her songs. This is the perfect age for the child to be playing with toys for inspiration. I’m not afraid to be wrong, but I’ll go out on a limb and be the first to say, this is about the new baby.
@@jbaalman She's used other kids names though too. Ronan as an example.
I'm following your thread here. So I had to try to look it up. According to the Wikipedia page for Betty, 'The characters- James, Betty and Inez- are named after the daughters of Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively'. What confused me was the 'daughters' part but apparently they named their oldest daughter after Ryan's dad, James who passed away from Parkinson's. All I've found on the fourth child is the name, Obi. Thank you for the info, my friend! ❤️
i've been waiting for a new Taylor reaction from you! love your videos
Thank you, my friend! Much more to come!!! ❤️❤️
Now, you absolutely need to listen to "Cardigan", which is the story from Betty's perspective, and "August", which is Augustine's perspective. Betty was the love of James' life, but he cheated on her all summer with Augustine. The trilogy was very well done, and there are interviews with Taylor before each one. I think you would also love to see the live performances of each from the Eras Tour. Great reaction as always!!!
Thank you so much, my friend! Yes, Cardigan will be next followed by August. Live performances would be an extra bonus! ❤️
Thanks for the Paul Simon shoutout!!!😊 Graceland is an amazing album!!! Thanks for your continued support of Taylor.
Thank you, my friend! I love Graceland! So many great songs on that one. Honestly, every time I hear the name Betty, I think of Call Me Al. 😁❤️
@@BemusingBill I can absolutely hear the connection. Have you ever seen the docu-short about that album? It’s called Under African Skies? It’s really good.
@@amycoleman3688 No, I haven't. I'll see if I can find it. I know I've heard that title before. Thanks!
I love the Long Pond sessions.... It's also a poke in the eye for those who say she can't sing!
Yes do the whole trilogy!
Fun fact James, Inez and Betty are the names of Blake Lively's (a really good friend of Taylor's) children. ☺️
Thank you, my friend! Can you believe that Long Pond Studios is like, an hour drive for me! Practically my backyard! 😁 Yes, Cardigan followed by August is next up. ❤️
The things I would do to listen to folklore for the first time again
I know what you mean, my friend! I think that's what attracts people to reaction channels, re-living that experience over again through someone else's first-time experience. ❤️
I see you already know about the three point of views in: Cardigan, August, and Betty, but another special touch is that all of these are not on the same timeline. Betty's is as she's older reflecting back on how she felt that summer and August I think is before James goes to Betty's party. So one's in the past, one in the present (James' pov you just heard), and one in the future.
Being is Swiftie is kind of fun finding little easter eggs Taylor leaves in the songs. Let's see what details you find that jump from song to song.
P.S: I love 🙌🏼 how you read the lyrics after the song just to focus on the writing itself, sometimes it's easy to do when enjoy the music too.
Thank you for that info, my friend! I didn't know about the timelines, so I'll keep that perspective going into the other two songs. Yeah, I love the easter eggs and tie-ins! She's a master of that.
Although, I catch a lot while listening and watching the video I know my attention is divided and I may miss stuff that may be relevant to the plot which is why reading the lyrics helps me to focus on the writing only. When albums came with liner notes (the lyrics for each and every song plus all the credits) I would read along with the album and try to absorb all of the details. Kinda like I'm doing now! ❤️❤️
@@BemusingBill you're already doing great, no one, you make some of the best reactions/reviews.
I always read the lyric booklets (if it has) along too, at least the first time ✌🏼😊
@@yezzN02 Thank you so much! ❤❤
William Bowery was a pseudonym for Joe Alwyn, her long term boyfriend. She used one herself in the past when writing with Calvin Harris, so the hype would be about the song, not who wrote it.
Gotcha! Thank you, my friend!
Call me Al… call me Al! Love that song 😂
Yes!! Graceland is one of my all time favourite albums!!
RIGHT?!? 😁❤️
Such a great album! Under African Skies is so awesome!
When I first heard the song when it was released I was like omg gay? Yay!❤❤ and then I found out she was singing from a boy’s perspective. 😂
Yeah, I'm not the only one who first thought that! 😁Had it not been for that interview I would have had no idea. It's like J.K. Rowling writing from a boy's perspective. ❤️
I was very confused in the beginning and thought it was a queer love story as well.
I hope you listen to the studio version also cause theres a cool harmonica not in this version, but i am glad you reacted to this one ❤
I heard about the harmonica in the studio version! That must add a different flavor to the song. More Dylan-like. Cool! Thank you, my friend! ❤️
@BemusingBill it is and I think if you get the time you'd love it 😊🫶
@@blondieHPfan10113 Thank you!
❤❤❤
William bowery was Taylor's boyfriend Joe Alwyn at that time and he wrote the song with her.
Oh, I see! Thank you, my friend! ❤️
UB! Folklore and Evermore are two of the (All Time) greats ☺️
James, Inez & Betty are the names of her friend’s children. William Bowery is a pseudonym for her ex boyfriend, Joe. This whole album (& Evermore) are not supposed to be autobiographical (they somewhat are). They are masterful works of art, from a writer’s standpoint! The tones and melodies are so gentle. It is quite a listen, start to finish! Take a day trip somewhere (up the coast or something). It’ll be a great day trip! From a Mainer to a New Yorker, these two are worth the drive ☺️✨✌️✨🤘
Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds children's names
Thank you for the idea, my friend! I just found out Long Pond Studios is right here in my backyard! 👀Well, about an hour drive north of me, but still close! A road trip to Maine cranking Folklore sounds EPIC!! I haven't been up to Old Orchard Beach in decades! Much love, my friend ❤️
@@BemusingBill OOB is a great day trip! Perfect time of year too. Yes, Long Pond IS upstate from you. It is beautiful, in the aerial shots, on the film 💜✨💜
@@lonbub6832 up in Hudson, Columbia County. I worked up there for a time selling yellow-page ads (remember those!! 😂😂). Very beautiful county and a nice little city with a lot of antique shops.
@@BemusingBill That sounds like a place I’d LOVE to spend a day! And yes, those were the days! The yellow pages doubled as an excellent door stopper too, on a nice spring day 🤣😭 Your reactions really are clutch, UB! Don’t stop. Your opinions matter. We look forward to them. I’m on your Patreon family too. My screen name is Scara Lo. I’ve been watching for a while. Thanks for the good, fun content!💜✌️🤘
I'd love to see your reaction to all too well 10 minute version
I was planning on doing that one next but since reading in the comments about this trilogy I'm compelled to hit up Cardigan and then August before I do All Too Well. Thank you, my friend! ❤️
This song, Betty, is from the perspective of James.
The woman who pulled up in the car is Augustine.
Someone else already pointed out the trilogy of the songs for you to check out, but wanted to make that distinction clear :D
Betty - From the perspective of "James"
Caridgan - From the perspective of "Betty"
August - From the perspective of "Augustine" aka The Other Girl James cheated on Betty with
Thank you, my friend! Its important to know these facts going into the next ones. I appreciate it! ❤️❤️
Love the Paul Simon joke! :) There's a really good cover of Call Me Al by an artist named Alicia Witt that you might like! :)
Thank you! 😁I love that song, especially the video with Chevy Chase! I think I've heard the name, Alicia Witt but I'm not familiar with her. I think I'm gonna have to check that one out. ❤️❤️
@@BemusingBill she is more well known as an actress in shows like Nashville and Friday Night Lights but before acting she was a classically trained pianist! She took Call Me Al which is kind of an upbeat song musically and paired it with somewhat ominous music, which fits better than you’d think! The lyrics on that song are way darker than they seem when you’re watching Chevy Chase lol.
@@Suprachiasmatic Maybe that's where I heard the name. I never watched those shows, but it's likely I've seen her name because of them. My wife says there is a video that is shot for shot exactly like the Chevy Chase video only with Jensen Ackles and his wife playing the parts of Paul and Chevy. I think I'll have to do that one just for fun! I'm really intrigued by Witt's version too and I'm planning on checking that out as well.
This is one of my favorite songs she plays live. There’s another official live version with it’s her and a guitar and a harmonica. It’s so awesome.
Like someone else said you need to do the full trilogy. Cardigan and August are the other 2. But if you listen to really closely to the whole folklore album most of it is based around these 3 characters. And tells a complete story. The whole album is phenomenal. I definitely recommend listening to the full album when you get a chance.
Thank you for the info, my friend! I'm definitely going to be doing Cardigan next followed by August. I gotta check out that live version, too! ❤️
@@BemusingBill It’s Live from the Academy of Country Music Awards. Is the one I’m talking about. Though the Live from the Eras Tour is great as well.
@@squarebarrel Cool! Thank you!
I was glad to have the explanation because, as much as I liked the song, I was a bit confused.
I've since learned a lot from the Swifties here- it's a trilogy: 3 characters in a teen love triangle (ah, youth!) James, Inez and Betty. All names of Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively's daughters (James is named after Ryan's dad that passed away). You know how much I love storytelling!!! ❤️
@@BemusingBill Thanks, Bill. That makes it clearer.
I'm on the East Coast too, but down south and Fu€k is as common for me as the word the. 😂 A Southern Belle with a serious potty mouth. And I have family in upstate NY. They live in Delphi Falls near Syracuse.
😂I love the way that word is pronounced down south! Southern Belle with a potty mouth! 😁❤️ What's better than that! Your family is a few hours north of me. I'm about an hour north of NYC.
@@BemusingBill 🤭🤭🤭 I used to spend my summers with my grandpa, grandma, and great gram on the farm in Delphi Falls. We would go shopping in a town called Manlius. There's literally just a post office in Delphi Falls but it's stunningly beautiful.
@@ladylisaromance8129 so many people think of NY and they only think of the city. I went to college in Lafayette, Indiana and I had friends that thought that and would ask, 'Is it dirty?', 'Did you ever get mugged?' I get it but look how big NY is! I'm not far from cow pastures and horse ranches!! I've never heard of Manilus and I'm willing to bet they have never heard of any of the towns around me either!
@@BemusingBill , yes it's so much more than NYC and the stereotypes. I've been to NYC and loved it but I adore upstate NY.
This is a spoiler for you to read when you’re doing august and cardigan. The crossover of lyrics is insane.
Betty @ 2.47: “James get in”
August @ 2.47: “get in the car”
Betty @ 3.13: “I’m here on your doorstep”
Cardigan @ 3.13: “you’d be standing in my front porch light”
That. Is. Crazy! Thank you, my friend! I think I'm going to have to be really on my toes during the next two! I've taken your notes and will be diligent in discovering more! ❤️❤️
Yeah, people forget it's a 30 year old woman sitting on that couch and throwing out a few swear words... It's not a big deal...but I think because she's been in the industry since she was a teen, people forget she's full grown 😂
Yeah, that could be why those very familiar with her might feel that way. Last job I worked my boss said she never heard me use any swear words, which shocked me! A testament to my self-control I gather. Of course, I responded with, "Really? Where the f**k have you been?!" 😂
Taylor is the same age as my youngest boy, so I guess it's like the first time I heard him drop an F bomb (he was much younger than 30 when that happened, just saying). What I love about it is it makes her more 'real', if you know what I mean. Much love, my friend ❤️
@@BemusingBill 💕 I enjoy your reactions so much, by the way. You take such trouble to really engage with what musicians are trying to put out there.
I'm not from the US, so it's always so funny to me how jarring Americans in the mainstream at least seem to find swearing 😂 but obviously you grew up with a different context.
I fully agree that the swearing works particularly well to humanise Swift. I am aware that she only really started swearing in her work from the time she left her old record label.
@@emmavink in this country we seem to abide by those Puritan values and that leads to censorship. In the 80s the PMRC was formed to 'protect children' from explicit language and labels were forced to post a warning on records, tapes and then CD's with EXPLICIT LANGUAGE stickers. Those actually helped drive up sales! 😂😂. Then super-giant companies like Walmart only sold censored CDs. Yuck!!
This song is not about her at all.
No. It's not 😉❤️
