It is kinder to break someones heart and let them move on and find happiness then it is to give false comfort. I know this because I'm very empathetic and it really can get you into trouble especially when you merge that with trauma and a reckless hatred for life. Main difference is making sure you're the only suffering rather than bringing others down with you as to not feel alone. If you think Martha is 100% guilty and Don is 100% innocent then you didn't understand the story and have probably hurt a lot of people without even having the awareness to realise it.
