I really enjoy your commentary. No shouting, no incorrect grammar, just a very pleasing voice to listen to. I love stock cars and I worked for Cadillac, Pontiac, Buick and Mercury dealers in the early 70's, so I appreciate your focus. I plan on watching all your videos

Adam the prior owners were probably scared that some "Street Rodder" dude would buy and ruin such a nice OEM Sedan! I know its in good hands!! Love that color too!!

I agree. Or, God forbid, have the vehicle used in a demolition derby. The prior owners made a very wise decision to pull it from the auction.

As a teenager i was working in my Dad's service station. We would pick up customers cars, service them, and return them. Got to drive some interesting cars that way. One i really remember was a 68 Mercury wagon. I was impressed with the ride & how quiet it was. You could feel the luxury and quality.

You have good taste, Adam. The full size Fords and Mercury's of the mid 60's to mid '70's were among the best built and best riding domestic passenger cars of the era. Possibly of ANY cars bar Bentley or Rolls Royce. They remain underrated and undervalued today.
For those of us who have owned or currently own one of these cars we proudly can share your passion for them.

I have thoroughly enjoyed your Mercury tour. I am particularly fond of all the full sized Mercurys of the ‘60s. Back in 1966, my family acquired a new Mercury Montclair. It was a black 4 dr hardtop with a red interior. I learned how to drive on that car. The only power accessory it had was power steering. I remember having to use both my feet on the brake to stop it. I took my road test in it and found it very easy to park because of the chrome strip that ran along the fenders front to back. I don’t think I could drive that size car today without the modern grannies and power accessories that are in today’s cars. They really are beautiful automobiles.

I always thought that the full-size '67-'68 Mercurys were right on par with the full-size '65-'66 Pontiacs in terms of body styling, great engines, ride and build quality. For instance, that 390 V8 was silky smooth and had plenty of power, yet wasn't a gas hog, right on par with Pontiac's famed 389 V8.

Granted a 60s era four-door vehicle with a hardtop looked better than one with posts, but that was as far as it went in terms of benefits. With the hardtops all it took was one window or door out of alignment and the wind noise going down the road could drive you to the brink (especially on the freeway). I also think that 60s era four-door vehicles with posts had better body integrity and simply felt like a tighter vehicle, especially minus the rattling, flopping around of windows on hardtops of the same era.

Beautiful, wonderful cars Adam. Thanks so much for sharing them with us along with your incredible knowledge of American cars of the era. This car looks like it would be super comfortable as a daily driver today for me except that it's far too nice to put that kind of mileage on. I'm actually jealous of the people who could buy cars like this new and drive them to work every day, then haul around the family on weekends to explore farmer's markets, autumn leaf viewing drives, boy/girl scout camping adventures, and church picnics. That's the America that these cars were built for!

I had a 75 Mustang II that I adapted GM cruise control to. GM turn signal levers are not at all like Ford's. So, I went to the local LM dealer and bought the lever, just like in your Mercury. Even with a discount, that lever cost $22 in 1975! While that doesn't sound like much today, it was about triple of what a GM lever would have been. However, it worked just fine! Love the color of the Park Lane!

4:18 A "baby Continental" that was just 2.5" shorter and 1" wider than the Continental itself. It's ironic that they were pushing this theme when the cars were about as unrelated as they'd ever be, with the body-on-frame, coil-sprung Mercury beating the Lincoln at its own game in some ways. Of course, the lowly Mercury owner would have to give up something, and in this case the most obvious thing was the novelty (and mixed blessing) of suicide doors.

Love it, my very first car was a 1968 Mercury Parklane, all electric windows, including the rear windows. 390, 4 barrel, positraction, and a trunk that would hold 10 bodies. Roll all the windows down, and at about 60 mph, the headliner would get tucked down. It would just float down the highway.

My paternal aunt (1916-2003) had a 1967 Park Lane. Dim memory, as I was born in 1969, but I'm pretty sure it was not a Brougham. Dark green with dark green cloth (silk) seats. I rode in it many times, most often atop the rear armrest, which at that time we thought was a kid's seat! She replaced it with a navy blue 1977 Continental Town Car with navy leather seats.
My cousin (her son) drove the Park Lane for many years and also the Continental, which went into an estate sale. My cousin eventually had a late 90s Town Car.

Both cars are beautiful, but the colour of that Marquis does it for me! I think the knob on the air control, should be up like in the Marquis as it clears the emblem , where as down looks like it will not clear the emblem! Might have been just one installer on the assembly line that put the knob on wrong, for a lot of the Park Lanes for that year!

    • @pcno2832
      @pcno2832 ปีที่แล้ว +3

It looked as if in the "right" position, the knob might obscure the marking to which it was pointing, so there were probably reasons for both sides of the argument. If only Ford had come up with a see-through version.

Then I bought back from him 1980 for $250.00 and it was back in the family again. I drove it proudly until the frame broke on it. Just need to point out something : The Maryland plate on the front has a 3-31-69 expiration date (those plates _were_ actually used during most of the 1968 calendar year and into the first three months of calendar 1969). Most old car enthusiasts here in Maryland use plates from the actual year the car was manufactured and pay no mind to the "3-31-". Maryland plates with the 3-31-68 experation date have a dash separating the letters from the numbers and have blue letters and numbers on white (just the reverse of the MD plate on the car). The "year of expiration" practice started in Maryland in 1938 (with EX-3-31-39) and continues today, except they now expire every two years. (Edit : Maryland plates went to a staggered expiration system in 1986.) I've been a license plate buff since I was a child (I'm 59 now); that is how I know. _(9/23/2023)_
P.S. Many people have already pointed out the correct pronunciation of Hagerstown. The first syllable is pronounced "hay." And Hagerstown has a television station, formerly known as WHAG, that was an NBC affiliated station until 2016 and is now an independent station and uses the call letters WDVM.

Yes, I debated what plate to get and decided on the one you see as it was in use for most of 1968.

I love old Mercs and Oldsmobiles. Both cuts above Ford and Ponchos. Still classy.

I just noticed the Mercury Winged Messenger above the radio. I was sad when it went away; it was so iconic 😍

Ah yes, I clearly recall the great controversy of the slider bar orientation war. It was called the SBO War of 1968. Many many men had verbal confrontations with no clear winner. It was a sad time with the occasional minor scuffle at car shows from time to time. One day, there may be a favorable resolution.

The way that cruise control power knob retracts is just incredibly cool... plus it had Accel & Decel loooong before GM & Cadillac.

11:18 The really tall antenna is strictly for AM. The ideal FM antenna is, to quote an FM engineer, "a 31 inch long piece of metal".

I have 1965 Rambler Ambassador. I wish it was in as good a shape as your car. Unfortunately she is burning oil and likes to pop out of park right into reverse! Otherwise she's a beauty, with about 80,000 miles. Engine needs rebuilding, but everything else seems to be in good shape.

The dropping rear window is neat option 🤔
Love the fron of the marquis.
It reminds me my childhood's Ford Taunus of the late 70's, still in the streets of of early 80's France

I was driving my 1957 T-Bird with the front fender mounted manual antenna fully extended. It sliced a bird in two as I was traveling about 80 mph. Bird guts all over the rear deck. It resembled the rear deck of a 1963 Continental one Dallas day in 1963.
