@@Scottmbradfield Yay! I'm reading Largesse of the Sea Maiden for the third time right now; love that Elvis story (and the Ukiah one and all the Death stories, Etc.)
Hi Scott. I'll confess that I never read any Joseph Hansen because I was in my 20s and I wasn't going to read any Gay Mysteries Gosh Darn it, But now that I am finally a grown up at age Sixty-I will check out his Brandstetter novels. I was told that Hansen downplayed the Gay aspect in his final Brandstetter novels.
Is that the old Bantam edition of Ross Macdonald you were holding up? I was just out of college when I found Macdonald and eventually read all of the Archer books! I still want to be Lew Archer when I grow up. I have never heard of Hansen before so I will try some of his novels.
I've just finished Raymond chandler and Ross macdoanld, could you recommend similar writers. John d macdonald unfortunately didn't work for me. Looking for more cynical, dark stories
Welcome to the bathtub, Romy. There are so many good thriller writers out there, definitely try: Ross Thomas, Patricia Highsmith, Joe Gores, James M Cain...
There's a great pre-Archer novel called The Dark Tunnel about creepy pre-war nazis on an American college campus. Joe Bob says check it out.
Interesting... I've got that... s
Yes! more puppy noir
It's coming!
BTW, have you done a report on Denis Johnson yet? I'd really enjoy hearing yer thoughts on him.
No, not yet, but I love his stuff, especially NOBODY SHOOT! So we will take him into the bathtub someday! s

He's worth checking out, just for those lovely descriptive paragraphs about southern cal and the people.

Yeah those old Bantam mass markets are the only way (for me) to read MacDonald. You should try Hansen, and let us bathers know what you think... s
It is indeed. I've still got most of those.
