This is how to make fish glue or any natural glue. This is the same process for sinew, rawhide, fish bladder, or bone glue. The tougher the material such as bone the longer the process takes.
nice clip there johnathan mccord i just learned a new ways on making some glue from other animals please keep this on coming my way love to learn new things
Can fish glue be made from dead fish found on a lake shore? Will it affect the quality of that glue? I can find many of them where I live and also my girlfriend, who's a vegan, considers it an ethical way to make glue from fish that are already dead.
How good is this type of fish skin glue at resisting moisture as compared to the fish bladder glue? I'm told that fish bladder glue is generally less superior in strength to other glues like hide glue, but far superior at resisting moisture than other types. In making compound bows you need a glue that is good at resisting moisture to aid bow longevity. Just wondering your take on how well this fish skin glue holds up in that area. Since the fish skin is usually bigger than the bladder, I'm thinking that maybe a batch of this can be made easier than making the bladder glue (don't need to catch as many fish). Thoughts anyone?
The Modoc I think it was used only sturgeons air bladder to make their glue the Chinese also did. The roman's also made glue from fish. Fish glue has a 33 pound bond. Fish bladder glue has a 40 pound bond. Knox Gelatin has a 42 pound bond. Two ton Ep0oxy has a 44 pound bond. White wood glue has a 35 pound bond. Yellow wood glue has a 38 pound bond. So Fish bladder glue is stronger than fish glue. As stated in the traditional Bowyers bible.
Most of wood working adhesives have animal extract of some sort...and perhaps better with present day understanding etc....i am wondering why regular white glue used on wood working would not work bonding horn to wood and be stressed. I want to try, but thinking how to get the glue of the horn for reuse, should the bond fail... any thoughts???
Is there a reason that you did not use a strainer? Maybe to thick to strain? Does the glue have any fish smell? Is the glue strong? Any advantage to it over other water glue or mostly novelty?
No need to really strain it if you are careful when you pour off the liquid. The glue is not strong compared to modern glues. It is about the same as hide glue. This is a glue that can be made in a primitive setting or to use when making primitive projects. I made a video on it because it is not seen often, hide and sinew glue is more popular.
This was very useful for My Agriculture Homework. Thanks a Bunch
hi really interesting vid. was wondering how long it takes to dry out and if theres any specific or ideal conditions for it to dry out? cheers

if the fish is somewhat fresh it should work. If the fish is rotting then the proteins are too far broken down to make a quality glue.

great video.ive made hide glue/sinew glue. but never fish skin glue. i catch lots of fish. this should be a great thing to do with the skins. thanks.
Good video 👍
Thank you for this great information .im planning on making some recurve bows & i will use fish glue to adhere the sinew the bow.
Could you glue pvc pipe with protein glues
Can you actually do anything with fish scales? Just curious.
In Russia for fish stock we boil fish (European perch) with scales, whole onion, bay leaf and pepper
make glue... boil them after washing until they are clear and boom more glue.
hi Jonathan can air or gall bladder can be used to make glue
Does scraping off the scales hurt the fish or is it dangerous to the fish?
It won't hurt the fish if the fish is dead
great video
yes do more videos like this!
Woo 👌👌👌👌
how many hours did you boil it? thank you!
There's a reason knives have sawtooth backs.. ita for scaling fish fast...

hi jonathan , whats your stove ?
It is a Stove-Tec rocket stove. I like it, it has had no issues. You could make one for lower cost but this unit is pretty portable.
Hi Jonathan , yes I'm already on it ;-) I found one similar on ebay for 79 UK£'s...so found a scrap stainless steel jar in the garage ...perfect . lol

Fish swim bladders make the best glue

Isinglass: also good for preserving eggs!

Not fish glue. Remember different types of glue have different properties and uses.
