    My hanger was too wide so I slammed it in my front door several times until the prongs closed up. Works great now

    Thank you for the review. I bought a 3-Pack of the Swing Strings on Amazon for $30. They work great. I didn't use the anchors provided in the packaging, those anchors will eventually fatigue and come out. I used a 200lb rated drywall anchor from home depot. The guitars don't weigh so much that they will fatigue these anchors. They are really nice hangers, thanks again.

      I used a couple of EZ ancors from Home Depot to hang a 70lb glass and oak mirror in my apartment for 4 years; even lasted fine through an earthquake. They would do just fine holding up a 10lb guitar.

    Thank you for this review. Watching this actually stopped me from buying a multipack of cheapos. It would have been disastrous due to the points you raised - lack of rotation and the nitro issue with the foam. Thank you so much. I will spend a bit more.

    I got a 2x4 and painted it white, put it along one wall, screwing it to the studs, and used sledgehammer hangers that are rubber coated, and the metal theyre made of is around 3/8" maybe even 1/2" thick. Works great and I could space the hangers anywhere along the 2x4. Got some extended hangers later on and put them between the existing hangers, I think they're a little weak so I only hang acoustics and ukuleles on those.

    Really nice Video 60CH. So many good points. The Nitro issue: I damaged the finish on a 1978 Tele - it had a rare mushroom grey burst finish (Anitigua) and put a black curly lead in the Guitar case with it which, after being locked away for a couple of years, left a series of brown marks on the face of the body. Probably lost several hundred pounds of its value due to that!! The same also happens with the black foam on guitar stands (also had this issue on another guitar). A chemical in the black foam/rubber bleeds into the nitro finish. So, Beware!! I'm now looking for a better silicon tubing to replace the foam on the stands. I would advise never putting leads in a guitar case without separating them from the guitar.

    Ryan, I'm a first time shopper for guitar hangers. I'm using floor stands now. You made it really easy to understand the differences in quality! I am officially well informed. Guitars are more fun to look at when they're at eye level, and everyone values their guitars equally, no matter their cost! You only address the quality of the hanger, not the guitar. Kudos to you!

      Randy Pressley I find that wall hangers better protect guitars around the house too. Stands can get knocked over and are more in the way. If my guitars are in cases I dont play them.

    I'm glad you tested this with Telecaster headstocks. I've seen cheap hangers that Tele's can slip through the hanger and fall to their demise. This is the best video I've seen that talks about the pros and cons of each type of hanger. It's worth the extra $$ to get quality.

    Think about getting a Hercules guitar hanger. They have a different design but very strong. You can get them in both wood and metal backs. It has an AGS which basically is a mechanism between the back plate and the hanger for added strength. It has foam but they say its a specially formulated foam that is safe for all finishes.

    I'm glad you pointed out how the hook swivels to accommodate different head stock shapes. When I first put my Tele in there, I didn't think it was going to work. If your going into plaster, you might want to pre-drill the holes. I just had the mother of all hand workouts. One thing that looks weird is the guitar is about 3 1/2 inches away from the wall. I had visualized the bottom of the body resting on the wall. An acoustic guitar would probably be right up against it.

  • @MurrayWilliams
    @MurrayWilliams 6 ปีที่แล้ว +15

    My favorite wall hanger is the Hercules. They have gates that drop down when you hang the guitar to keep it from falling off the hook. They are great!

    • @natethegr8925

    • @0Imtheslime0

      String Swings have some aggressively bent hooks that gates are not needed. You literally have to kick the guitar upwards for it to fall off.

    Thank you for demo-ing these. I wasn't sure if and how the wall mounts would hold narrow headstocks. I'm expanding my "family" and the wall is becoming their storage space. I love it, it gives me the easy access of a floor stand but they're up out of harms way.

    Hi, what about brick walls? your reccomendation applies to wooden walls where one can locate studs, but what should I do if my wall has bricks?

    • @5688gamble
      @5688gamble 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @Saxyct I drilled in deep with a 10mm masonry bit and used long thick screws, I reinforced the wall plugs with epoxy and epoxied in the screws, overkill, but some of the guitars are quite heavy. Mind you, I have a large TV mounted on a swing arm to the same kind of wall with 3 10mm diameter screws, and it's heavier than any of the guitars and on a big extending arm, I'm just paranoid. Just buy some decent thick, long screws and the correct plugs for concrete/masonry. 8 to 10mm will be plenty, you could probably hang from them yourself. Really depends how good the brickwork is. How easily it chips and crumbles. Better than mounting it to plasterboard though. Just annoying to fix as my walls are really tough to drill, even with a high power corded hammer drill, went through a few drill bits hanging them all.

  • @REBELSCL
    @REBELSCL 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I’ve got a partial fix for your cheap wall hangers. If you were to take the bracing part of the wall hanger, the part where the thread sticks through, off. You could then shorten that brace with a saw thereby exposing more of the screw. I’m hoping that you used drywall supports on the two screws that missed the stud. What do you think of Hercules wall hangers?

    Great Video, I use the String Swings also !!! On those cheap ones you could always take the nut off,Then and run a Tap another 1/2 inch to gain support. As far as the screws hitting the studs You could drill a 5/32 hole at six O clock to grab the stud. Some of these kids today don’t have a lot of cash to buy picks let alone wall hangers.Just my two cents worth, I Figured if you could make them Stronger they be a better Product,

    Is there a guitar wall bracket that also provides BOTTOM support? I have vintage guitars and don't like the idea that the total weight of the guitar is held up by just the neck. SUGGESTIONS??

    • @60CycleHumcast
      @60CycleHumcast  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      there are stands that hold the guitar at an angle with the bottom held up by a support, but i think those are sketchy, you dont want lateral stress on a neck like that. I've never heard of a guitar being damaged from hanging vertically from the headstock but you could always build some kind of shelf for the bottom of the guitar to rest on. Honestly if you are that worried about your guitars safety you should keep it cased anyways.

    So my advice when your buying look for that data :)

  • @jasonadams527
    @jasonadams527 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Ok I agree with you for the most part but here are some things you seem to not understand. One a quarter inch of thread in mild steel will hold more than a hundred pounds but it does limit orientation as you say. The only screw in the wall that holds the stress of the load is the top one the others are only for maintaining orientation but do add to the shear load but only in a minor way and quite inconsequential in the loads you will ever hopefully put to them even with a bass. A classical guitar has a typical 2 inch or better neck width and squeezing them is much easier than spreading them. Or do you think that only electric guitars are hung on the wall? But I agree that the cheaper ones are not worth buying. Sorry I am an engineer turned luthier so in all fairness these things should be pointed out.

    Really useful video, great tip about getting the screws lined up with studs. I don't have wall hangers yet so I'd never really given any thought to how they are designed.
    I've got a Hercules GS412B floor stand (the one with the auto-close mechanism at the top and a stability leg that goes against the back of the guitar) which uses foam at the top hanger but its supposed to be a better foam that won't harm stuff like the cheap foam will. Not all foam is bad but the warning is worth mentioning that some will ruin an expensive instrument. We've also got some dirt cheap Stagg branded floor stands which I think are also foam, but, no nitro guitars in this house to worry about yet.

    I'm lucky because my flat has concrete walls so as long as I make sure that the hanger is screwed in tight into plugs and not just into the concrete it won't budge. The friend who mounted the hangers reckoned that I could attach a hammock and sleep on it but to be sure we mounted the hangers over my bed so my axes will have a soft landing if they fail.

    • @MrXyzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
      @MrXyzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If the walls are concrete, you can definitely install a hammock that can carry an adult. You need a good drill and drill bit, and install the hammock properly though. The concrete won't fail, but the fastening might.

    I had the bad experience of having my Fender Strat fall from the String Swing after about 15 minutes of it hanging up. I'm assuming it slipped through the prongs because of the material. Also I noticed that some String Swings are curved at the prongs and some are not..... Is there a better guitar hanger for Fender Starts and Teles?

      That’s bizarre. I’ve never had that happen.

      @@60CycleHumcast I know it was really bizarre for me too. All of a sudden I heard this crashing sound and there was my Strat on the ground. Thank God they're built almost indestructibly.

    In your opinion, What would be a good option for a heavy bass ?

    • @60CycleHumcast
      @60CycleHumcast  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      as long as you can get the screws into a wooden stud a hanger should hold a bass just fine. unless your bass is made out of pure lead or something.
