More than living, he rises from the dead, thanks to the Contradiction magic that happens when Mavis finally defeats Zeref. In the same way that when Zeref left MAvis in a coma, a new Life was generated inside him. In this case that contradiction resurrected Makarov. Or so it is implied.
Honestly, Erza being the one to stop them instead of Lucy and Juvia was a great decision on Mashima's side

The part with Makarov, it was a sad moment, but a beautiful one aswell.

Theres a theory that why Makarov is still alive because of Irene's miscalculation. When Irene shrunk the whole Fiore and mixed it randomly which includes the Tenroujima where it is became part of the mainland. In the Tenroujima arc it is stated that the Tenrou tree prevents a Fairy Tail member from dying. Which make sense when Tenroujima is became part of the shrunked mainland thru Universe One Spell.
Erza crying hurts every time. All the characters know something is wrong in the world if Erza cries, and their promise to keep her from crying warms my heart 😭❤
In the manga, the way Natsu's fire burns Erza's arm is *WAY* worse.
I'm pretty sure the ice was also far worse on Grays side, right? or am I just misremembering?

Everytime Fairy Tail does this you never know if it's serious now or if the show will find a way to rescue the people that we think might have died. People sometimes seem to critisize it and Fax also does not like it but I think it is fine. Because even if the show finds a way to rescue them. For the characters themselves they were ready to die. So I stll think its fine to show those remembering scenes and stuff because this is how the characters also feel and it its not important if there is way afterwards, that rescues the person. So Makarov indeed sacrificed his life here and everybody around him knew it.
Regarding the movies I would love to see the second movie Dragon Cry here.
I highly disagree, you think it’s okay because the characters are ready to die; but we don’t see them actually die at all, not many of the enemies and certainly not the guild members. It ruins immersion, you can’t take half ‘serious’ moments seriously bc a character is supposed to be dead but miraculously survived due to plot armour, as a writer I understand wanting to cling into characters but it seriously ruins fairy tail. Amazing story telling, it carries the show as the plot is pretty good (until the end it gets all over the place) it needs that depth, and seriousness, I won’t make the usual power of friendship argument since it was kinda popularised by fairy tail but dude, it’s so annoying seeing everyone pull off dumb stupid powerful things onto the enemy side with a few consequences apart from death… just look at how well written Augusts death was written. Imagine that with the characters we’ve known and loved, would make the series phenomenal. It’s not a a fairy tail exclusive problem though. Dragon ball, Naruto and many others sadly tend to do this whole thing that no significant main characters die, not saying anime has to become Jjk or csm but yk, a few significant deaths would be nice in these anime.

@@PirateJunglerLOL fair point, I haven’t myself caught up to the 100yq, so my bad about makarov. However, that doesn’t alleviate my point at all; juvia, gajeel, Laxus, erza, even natsu himself, sure it makes sense how they were saved I won’t say it doesn’t; that doesn’t mean it isn’t plot armour, gajeel literally got lucky, it’s a coincidence that the one time Carla actually listened to her clairvoyance it’s to save juvia, like cmonwe didn’t even see her prophecy on screen! The writer deffo pulled that one out of their ass just to have juvia still in the story. Ezra’s one pissed me off the most excluding gajeel, bro every single bone in her body was broken, she was out of magic and stamina, recently beaten up by acnologia (if I’m not mistaken, that could be after but either way) she SHOULD NOT have been able to get up and then destroy that damn meteor, can we be serious? She was one of if not the most damaged, battered person on their side but yet she survived against irene, I can’t take the series serious. I love it but it could also be so much better.
@@PirateJunglerLOL Dies, but survives, so what's even the point. It's just a joke. And that's not the first time it happens, in the anime this is actually like the last one. It happened since first Arcs, and it happened multiple times afterwards, which as the other guy said - "ruined immersion". Everytime someone was about to die, like Gajeel etc. noone with brain took it seriously.
What is the problem? Every time the anime shows these flashbacks, I always think that the characters will die, because they are well planned (the flashbacks).
Maybe, the only one that should have died had to be Makarov, but it does make sense why he didn't

Makarov using the real FAIRY LAW at the end and it costs his life with it.
According to Mashima, MAvis can't spam Fairy Law, because after his confinement for so long, he still didn't control his magic well again and Fairy Law or simply Law requires tremendous control of your magic. Furthermore, Mavis was afraid that when using Fairy Law it would activate uncontrollably because she was the Fairy Heart.
More major reason is she has the ankhselam curse. She can't predict the outcome if she uses Fairy Law. She has great magic control but the curse doesn't make things easy.
Correct me if I'm wrong, the Law magic is still not complete right?
Because the Law magic is the main magic of Mayvis.

Fun Fact: Yuri and Makarov are names coming from the Russian military generals. Laxus's name comes from the word "Lux" means "Illuminate" which is based on Light/Brightness.
In the manga, Chapter 505 ended with the just the pannel of Makarov Standing. Along with "His Lofty Soul and the voice of his Noble Life... Were forever engraved into the hearts of his "Family" "
A lot of people don't understand that at this time tenroujima is connected to the mainland and thus making the mainland the sacred land for fairytail so no one can die from the fairytail atleast while giving them a boost to magic power too. My headcanon is makarov use all his life force but the tenroujima giving it back slowly that is why he is alive at the end. That also explain how can erza borrowed powers to the master or tenroujima to destroy the meteor just like her battle with azuma.

@@Jelo0305 these replies make sense to me, but it’s still quite literally plot armour, the first reason why didn’t die in the tenroujima arc was bc of the sacred land rule in the first place, idk I still think all these fake deaths are plot armour with that point.

I’m just going with a recommendation for when you guys finish Fairy Tail, since it’s good regular content.
Watch Magi, Labyrinth of Magic. It’s around 50 episodes long with both seasons. It has good production standards (A1 Studios), a really consistent power system, geopolitics, insanely dope designs (like damn good) and an Arabic setting, which you don’t find often.
Also the soundtrack slaps.
It's true that she maybe can spam fairy law using fairy heart, but remember when they were talking in the guild hall before the Alvarez empire attack, they still don't know how to use it, imagine firing infinite amount of Etherion and you're unable to stop. Imagine activating Fairy Law and you can't deactivate it and the magic fcks up real time ends up killing innocent people. Maybe that's the reason why hehe

I think mashima can't really bring himself to kill makarov because he said once that makarov resembles his father who also died in real life.
From a reader's perspective I'm defently not a fan of this but as a human being I can totally understand his feelings.
That’s fair; as a reader Mashima also also did the fake death with damn near every relevant fairy tail member, so at that point of the series it’s just rubbing salt in the wound for the reader. I do love fairy tail, but I am also a writer and it absolutely irks me how much plot armour they have when it comes to death.
@@Anxrchyst makarov's fake death is the only one that I personally don't like because it felt like the perfect ending for him and there wasn't much to do with him anymore so why bring him back. All the others I'm very happy that they didn't die because they still have potential and I like them and in my honest opinion I don't think deaths are needed at all. There is more than enough sacrifices/sadness in fairy tail that main characters dying is unecessary. It's rare in shonen anime like fairy tail to kill main characters anyway so just don't do them at all rather than fake ones in my opinion.

There’s no need for all the fake deaths because of all theyve already been through anyway, so I kinda wish then if that’s the case they didn’t have any at all with that point, if there’s gonna be a fake death or two I don’t mind but after a while it gets to the point where it’s like what’s the point of even having the character ‘die’ if they will just come back, there is definitely ways of writing around it like Makarovs paralysis (he did get paralysed right? I’m not sure if I’m remembering correctly.) or soemthing adjacent to make them unable to fight due to injuries, with that being said, you made a really good point so thank you for sharing that opnion.
I mean if you can't bring yourself to kill him then don't do a PERFECT fake death first ....

While I agree the fake-out deaths were a bit overdone in the final arc, I'm glad that Juvia and Gajeel are alive. Also, 100 year quest actually makes use of the Juvia one to properly finish developing Gray x Juvia from Gray's perspective.
To be fair, I, too, was annoyed with Mavis just like Makarov. Not knowing the plan doesn't help while watching your loved ones literally seconds from dying.

You know why the money shots are like very wallpaper material? Those angry and fierce faces and stills? It's because Hiro Mashima's artstyle is actually very appealing, It's simple yet refined to liking of what a common anime fan is looking for.
Much more of a reason to ask why better animation is denied in Fairy Tail. Kimetsu No Yaiba has a lot of money shots as well and of course the animation they have lift up the mid story making it in mainstream.
For me, it would have been the most beautiful death in all animes the way he said "fairy law" so peacefully... Unfortunately they ruined his beautiful sacrifice

Imo this END vs Gray fight was rushed, both in setup and length. I wasn’t as invested as a grudge fight (like Erza VS Minerva) because Natsu and Gray are so conveniently written as enemies, they both conveniently think their ladies have died, and after this fight they INSTANTLY get over it. It feels so artificial and there’s 0 tension

Technically Mavis was only seen doing "Law" which she didn't fully master at that time... after mastering it, and altering it she created "fairy law"

So zeref can also use law. He can now use it to finish them off. Also precht could also use grimoire law, why didn't his corpse version use that ? Food for thought
Law and Fairy Law are magic of Light, Zeref has no ability to cast them. Although he developed law, he himself says that he never used it. It was Mavis who completed it and Pretch perfected it. As for why Hades' "story" can't use Grimore Law, it's simple, stories bring people's memories to life as physical manifestations, Laxus doesn't know how Grimore Law is, in fact only Makarov knows it exists. that technique, that's why he doesn't use it

Both Zeref and Mavis can't use Law because they can't predict the outcome thanks to their curses.

The plot hole... Mavis should able to cast a stronger version of fairy law for COUNTLESS TIMES with her fairy heart... It doesn't matter how unstable the fairy heart since Fairy Law will only target those who the caster seem as enemies...not even a leaf would perished... I'm still kinda confused and a lil bit upset why Hiro didn't made it that way but let Makarov did it just for the sake of pranking his death
Mavis doesn't view Fairy Tail members as allies,she sees them as pawns because if she loves Fairy Tail they will all die due to curse,so no she can't cast Fairy Law

You no longer cry with sadness at Makarov's sacrifice... You cry with admiration and respect... The moment Erza kneels and Mavis collapses in tears we realize that he proved to be the best fairy tail teacher... She never saw them as guild wizards... She saw them as children and family and I know that Mavis cried out of admiration and respect for Makarov for transcending his message... Erza was the only one who could stop the great battle between Natsu and Gray. Simply spectacular, the design of the two powers, that of the demon hunter and the dragon slayer, ufff, the control of her elements is incredible and how Erza was able to stop them with her tears and two hands... It just shows that Titania is at the level of them and we will know very soon why 💥🔥🥀👆
