It's been exactly 2 years since I purchased my Leica R set. Was the investment worth it? Of course it was! Also, this video was registered a week ago and I didn't know I was gonna get the 15mm f/3.5 and the 60mm f/2.8, my latest additions to the collection. Will talk more about these two lenses in another video.

The best budget cinema set, period. I recently purchased an FD set in lieu of Leica $$$. Although the Leica’s are not common industry lenses, they are JUST above line for acceptable industry work. Zeiss Standards are the lowest standard, Leica’s are right behind. (Local 600 1st AC 👋🏿)
So you feel the Contax Zeiss are better than the Leica? I have both the 50mm and 28mm Contax Zeiss.
@@LockedOnFishing no, not the Contax, the Arriflex Standard Speeds. The Leicas have better optics for filmmaking than the Contax.
I wanted to buy a leica lens a year ago after you raved about them. I am glad that you are still so enthusiastic about them.
Those Canon FD lenses are freakin sweeeeet. Wow. Some of the most beautiful images I've seen from any lens.
Where can you buy them already rehoused ? You like better than the Leica r?
I bought a set from Mark too, in 2019. I love them! 19, 28, 35, 50, 90 & 135. My 90mm stops down over time, similar to your 19mm.
Just put a little black hair elastic next to the aperture ring, that will fix it.

For those that feel they are missing out by not being able to afford Leica R glass: I actually bought a set of mint condition mid 80s color matched Leica R's for ~10k and ended up selling them within the same year. The glass is obviously good, but even when compared to quality photo glass , the difference is very hard for anyone to notice. Things like the "Leica 3d pop" and "leica skin tones" are only noticeable by those with a trained eye, and even then there's some mental bias going on. With skin, I mainly noticed Leica glass controls the reds and removes them in a way. It's similar to what you see with an an IR filter removing the redness of IR pollution on a BMPCC camera...looks good of course, but you're talking about a
Totally disagree. Doesn’t matter if a client can’t tell. I can tell, my director can tell and honestly a client might not get the 3d pop or the bokeh thing, but it does see how crappy a Sigma looks in comparison. Following your theory Cooke, Arri Master primes or many other lenses wouldn’t have any reason to exist and those companies would be out of business. You CANNOT recreate the Leica look or the Cooke look in post. You just can’t. With lenses like Leica or Cooke I can go out any time of the day and get some incredible shots. Again, you can achieve some good results with a Sigma glass, but there is a reason if a Cooke S4 costs 10K and not $600. If you can’t see the difference your eye is clearly not trained or you didn’t spend much time using those kind of lenses.
Matteo’s spot on. Once you start getting into higher quality film equipment, very small (but required) additions cost loads of money. I work with the best equipment in the world on a daily basis (as a 600 1st in LA) and IMO the price of the Leica’s are actually one of the most substantially bargained pieces of film equipment today! The price of Contax, FDs, Zuiko’s, Nikkor’s, etc. are great for the quality. Also, beyond the image quality, my requirements as a 1st AC for a set of lenses includes a very long focus throw, proper gear pitch, step-less iris, a locking mount, durability, etc. all of these requirements cost loads of money as well. So yes, filmmaking is expensive but the additional costs for that (seemingly) small quality bump is justifiable IMO.
@@matteobertoli I think it's also a matter of whether or not you're at a place in your career where the optical differences are worth the price tag. For a lot of solo filmmakers, there's so much stuff to buy between camera bodies, accessories, lights, grip, a high powered computer, harddrives, glass, etc. that you really have to be in a good place with your income and career to shell out 10 grand+ for glass. I assume you were making a pretty comfortable living from filmmaking when you decided to invest? (I also remember you paid less than 10k)
I used to rent out my Leica R set knowing that they were highly desired lenses but due to their vintage nature, they always came back damaged in one way or another and always cost more to repair or replace.
That’s why I never rent them out :) Plenty of incompetent people out there. Except that thing with the 19mm, I never had an issue and I use them every week.
@@matteobertoli what is it about the 19mm ? And what do you think about the 35mm 50mm 80mm summerlux?
A series of vintage lenses that I love is the Soviet era Helios lenses. Talk about sharpness and character.
My goodness, has it really been two years? Thank you for the update and two year review.
It's so hard to build a set nowadays with increasesing prices for Leica, Contax, and (good) FDs. For anyone looking to get into vintage lenses I would reccomend Zeiss Distagon (Classic). Cheaper, newer, less maintenance issues.
I’ve been building a set of contax but some are out of my budget so for the 35mm 1.4 I’ve gone for the classic which I got for a brilliant price (probably 1/5 of the price of a reasonable contax) they match well even though my contax are the old AE types with the ninja star iris. I still would like to see Matteo do something with the Helios 44-2, as good as the contax and Leica r are all my favourite photos and clips are on the helios, I’d love to see the footage in someone like Matteo’s capable hands. Please Do it Matteo!
Would it be safe to say that maybe not owning lenses and rather rent lenses also work? For my personal experience the freedom to try different glass helps expand on different textures and not feel obligated to stick with the same glass due to the pressure of a heavy investment is also a bit liberating. I personally own a set of these lenses and like them but have felt stuck with the same look. At the moment rehoused vintage lenses are becoming trendy and affordable.
In the end it’s always about what the film asks for instead of imposing a look just because you own them.
Just thinking outside the box. Not claiming there is a right or wrong way. It’s nice to create other options 😉
Thats pretty normal.
Just rent them from someone who already has a set.
Same with an arri alexa or other high end cameras.
Same with the grip truck.
I’m in between Leica R or Carl Zeiss… leaning towards R. Also love the buttery Luts.
The best budget Zeiss option for professional filmmaking are the Standard Speeds.
What do you think of Leica M as video lenses?
Great video of great glass by a great DP.
Hey Matteo ✌I am also considering creating a Leica r set. I wonder if there are differences in the look with the different connectors ( 1-Cam/2-Cam/3-Cam). Could not really find anything online about this. So I wanted to ask which Leica r, other than the serial number and f-stop you own. I hope you can help me. Thank you very much. Love your Work buddy!
Now since the huge increase in price and nonavailability of Leica R lens, I was thinking of an alternative What is your opinion on DZO 20-55 and 50-125 T2.8 parfocal Lens bundle?
Video estremamente utile! Secondo te ha un senso investire in qualche set di lenti cinema budget? Se si quali? Perché queste sono magnifiche ma molto costose. C'è, secondo te, qualche lente cine budget (sotto i 1k) che hanno delle caratteristiche particolari?
This is a cool setup, especially how much leica lenses are. I need to get a setup for cinema lenses.
What about canon fd buying description like serial number and color matching? what should we be looking out for?
Maybe I'll add some to my kit later. Just bought some Sony CineAlta mk2 lenses. Haven't tried them yet. lol
Hey Matteo, I was wondering if you new of any guides or resources on building a leica collection. Thanks
Been working with primes on my 4K for a year now. I love them! Ever since i bought a zoom , I got really spoiled and I find myself using my primes less and less each day.
I'm having difficulties going back to primes, because switching lenses on set is stresful. How do you deal with it Matteo?
Hire an assistant when you go out to shoot for clients, makes you look more professional. If you find the right person, it will enable you to do a way better job in lighting and shooting. Try to find an assistant that's still a student, who can learn from your expertise whilst earning a small buck.
I will buy your primes from you.
Also I’ll trade you my G-Master set.
What's your opinion on the Nikon non-ai lens, everyone when they talk about the Nikon vintage lens automatically talks about the ai and ais version but IMO, but the non-ai version seems to be a bit better. Have you used or seen them? If so, do you recommend them?
Does your 28mm have a standard filter thread for the step-up-ring? Or was it a "series" adapter type, requiring a special mod?
All modded
Do you think a 3 lens set could be enough to shoot all sorts of stuff? And which focal lengths (fullframe equivalent) would you pick? 24mm, 50mm and 85mm?
Absolutely, but you need to know what you like and want out of a lens set first. Is there a focal range you find yourself sticking to the most, or are you looking for a single wide, normal, and telephoto lens as the set? For me personally, a 24mm, 28mm, and 40mm (on Super 35) could keep me happy for the vast majority of what I shoot, but swapping the 24 for a 20 or the 40 for a 50 or 60 could definitely be a better fit for some projects. I will say though that the jump from 24 to 50 is quite large on the wide end. It might be better to go with a 24, 35, and a 50 or 85. Honestly, the best thing you can do is to go to a camera store to try a zoom lens with a long range on a full frame camera (since they have the most zoom lens options) such as a 24-70 or a 24-105 and take note of the focal lengths you find yourself landing on the most. That can serve as a good commitment free way to see what you like before you spend a lot of money on lenses. You could even rent something from sites like Lensrentals if you want to spend more time deciding and in more places than just a store. Good luck with the search though, and happy filmmaking!
Yep that's what i've got now, a 24mm 2.8 // 50mm 1.4 // and a 90mm 2.0 I will add the 35mm 1.4 eventually
There are some local shops that sell Leica lens, but they don’t look like yours with the front large ring around the lens and the second ring with the teeth? Did you add those?
Do you have to use an adapter to mount to your 6k pro?
Check out the first video I made about them ;)
Where can I buy these front lens cap?
Could you really spot a difference between canon fd and leica r mixed together in a single video ? (Graded and matched WB)
Yes, you can’t do anything in post about the 3d pop. Also flares are way more controlled on the Leica
FD’s are overrated, mainly because of the misunderstanding of K35s and their imperfections.
@@matteobertoli I was always wondering what is that 3d pop? Is it just better contrast deeper blacks ?
@@bazejukojko5160 it’s how the lens separate the subject from the background
@@matteobertoli I've done some research and now I know what you mean 😊 do you know some cheaper 3d lenses ?
This was insightful! Great job. Keep it up!
Indeed, my friend. Great content. I have really enjoyed my set for daily use. On feature work, I love the Thalia and s7i. My two favorites. A friend of mine was looking at Vespid and the Meike FF, which you have tried, I believe. I have never used them. With your experience, for depth and rendering, thoughts compared to R? Thank you.
Hola! I see your serial numbers put your set at 1980/1981. My 35/50/90 set I'm thinking about is all in the 1965 range. Any experience/knowledge of this era Leica r Elmarit-R/Summicron-R range? Also aside from using duclose, did you have to get the focus rings serviced to provide a more smooth throw for focusing, or is that something duclos did for you? I'm finding this set to be slightly stiffer than I'd like. Thanks so much for your content btw! You're really tempting me to move to Portugal as I recently found out my ancestors went to Portugal BEFORE they went to Panama, so I technically could get my citizenship!
Hey Tyson! 1965 are VERY old. They will likely be in bad shape. I always recommend 80’s and up. I bought them already modded. Portugal is beautiful, but you need to be able to source your money somewhere else because salaries/budgets there are extremely low
@@matteobertoli Awesome, thank you!
What converter do you use to go from Leica R Lens to Black Magic Ursa PL mount ?
My leica r are ef mount
so you went from Leica R to EF - EF to PL?
@@chelseaodufu6935 no, i have ef mount for the Ursa.
Picked up a 35mm and 90mm which had close serial numbers and in pristine condition for $150.
Summicron or Elmarit?
@@KevinKaufmann Elmarit.
If I don't have the money but I want to get the same look, Is there any chance to use the 18-35 with some filters to obtain the same result? If yes, which filters? thanks
There is no way to recreate that separation and 3d pop. You can have smoother highlights roll off by using a diffusion filter, but a Sigma is a Sigma unfortunately
I don't declick my aputures because of the drifting.
oh man i have a set of 6 Leica R lenses and i got all of them for less than 3k 6 years ago , i'm looking forward to Cine mod them and start using them
Same here! I spent a little more but the value keeps climbing! Tempted to sell them but I always change my mind haha. Can’t beat the look + compact size combo these lenses offer.
@@KevinReyesDP I watched your video and it’s supper informative. Don’t sell them because getting your hands on them might not be easy again
@@Kashilembo thanks for watching! I was definitely inspired by Matteo. I’ll try not to sell haha! Unless they get absurdly expensive and I can afford an Alexa mini LF or some k35’s haha.
@@KevinReyesDP I hear you , I’m slowly building my canon FD SSC which will be my poor man K35
@@KevinReyesDP You don’t need an Arri :)
That 3D pop is real, I see what you mean. Quick question-- do you ever struggle with shadow noise on the 6k? I am trying to figure out the best way to avoid it. It is especially present when when I boost the gamma in resolve. This happens to me even when I feel the exposure is good.
Even at lower than base ISO? Do you use false color for exposure?
@@timeallofgreatestthe I always shoot at 400 or 3200 ISO and I use false color to expose my shots. Generally I prioritize preserving the highlights.
Stay below 1250. You’ll be fine.
@@Afroninja10000 1250 & 200 are best at noise control, but 400 & 3200 are best at compensating for both. The 6K, for the price, is close to as good as it gets with range retention.
Tip: if you’re in a controlled lighting environment, find your lighting ratio and make sure to light THE ENTIRE frame, not JUST the subject.
@@timeallofgreatestthe I'll definitely keep these things in mind. Thanks for the advice!
Definitely very nice images there Matteo. How close do you reckon the image of the P4K is to the P6K given you've owned both. The longer i have the P4K, the less I think I need to upgrade (at least for a very long time) but when I do, it'd definitely be the 6K or 6K Pro (more for the monitor than the NDs...)
I guess if you are happy just use it until you arent anymore. I mean never change a running system and the Bmpcc 6k isnt going anywhere and will be alot cheaper and then maybe a new Pocket Camera will be there. So i think if you do everything right (set design, lighting, story, actors etc.) the question after the camera isnt important. You will get these images very closely and rather invest into lenses. And f you want to upgrade i would wait till summer because in the spring many cameras get released

@@JonasStuart Oh yes i was looking at the Milvus too but calculated the price for a set and went with the Zeiss Classic because they are only half the price and have more character
@@Milan-cf1xe I've tossed up between the two for months. Optically most of them are the same but the 50 and 85 are optically new designs and offer more detail and sharpness. I also live in the UK so weather sealing was a factor. You always have to compromise somewhere unfortunately!
interesting to know if most of the time you use the lenses wide open :)
Yep!
I found a set of 28 2.8, 35 2, 50 2, 90 2, for 2900$, is this a good value? (they seem pretty mint)
Very likely a scam
