One of my all time favorites. Criminally underrated and unseen. It has everything Brandon loves, monster, Kung fu, badass vengeance, weird CGI, good practical effects, and with a naked Monica Belucci in her prime, and he hasn’t reviewed it...insanity.

The CGI during the title screen still looks better then the CGI in Mortal Kombat: Annihilation too! First time I saw Mark Dacascos was when he played Jimmy Lee in the Double Dragon adaptation (1994).
This got released in cinemas in the UK and as a fan of the manga I dragged my friends along to see it. As a result I'm probably responsible for half its box office takings. It was pretty good though.
If anyone was wandering why Yo always seems without clothes, in the manga Freemen, both men and women, very often fight naked or in underwear. It’s easily one of the most nude manga ever that isn’t a hentai.
Hey Brandon, Brotherhood of the Wolf is an outstanding movie. If you only see one foreign language-mystery-period costume drama-martial arts-horror-drama this year - this should be the film!

Julie Condra was so beautiful-she also played the sister in Eerie Indiana. It's pretty sweet that this is the movie where her and Dacascos met, fell in love, and later married. So strange what happened to Dacascos career-he never reached the heights he should have...and I sort of wonder if it's because folks tried to make him into Brandon Lee 2.0-including when he was cast in The Crow: Stairway to Heaven tv show. That show's...not good. It kind of takes the plans the studios had to make a Crow trilogy with Brandon Lee and turns it into a TV show.
Marc Dacsos was great in John Wick 3. He also played Wo-Fat in the Hawaii Five-0 reboot. Your review convinced me to watch this movie sometime this week.

Most people might recognize him from his role as the Wizard from the two Arnold Conana The Barbarian movies and as the original voice actor of Aku in the Samurai Jack animated series. His last role was as the voice of Splinter in the 2007 movie TMNT which was released after his death. He passed away in 2006.
Hey a movie based on my favorite manga writer, Kazuke Koike. His work on Lone Wolf and Cub, and Samurai Executioner is goddamn awesome. And as far as i know, this movie pretty much is a faithful adaptation of the early episodes of the anime.

I've not read the manga but I did get to see the anime and one scene will always stick with me. When a gang forces Emu to strip and dance for them and Yo goes to rescue her. The whole scene is a dialogue by an old woman telling a story about the Tiger(Emu's back tattoo) summoning the Dragon(Yo's back tattoo). I love the scene so much.

This movie, is Awesome, and Mark Dacascos, is such an underrated Martial Artist, that he doesn't get the respect he deserves in Hollywood!!! @@adamhenry6793 gotta do your research, if you've never seen it Adam do yourself a favor and watch the anime first, the live action is like episode 1 only stretched out, they should have adapted the other 5 episodes for film but gotten it right, Koh didn't die till the 4th episode and he never tried to kill yo he was loyal, and yo was his friend and his boss after yo was named head of the 108 dragons, hell emo becomes the owner of the mauramasa sword and masters it and goes on to help yo in certain missions. He has a three way relationship with a black woman who he later renames dark eyes who heads up a former African military terrorist organization who he brings into the fold with the 108 dragons. It's a great story and anime, great development, and consideration into what makes a man be what he is, a short anime series that should have had a longer run.
I remember when in the time between about 1998 and 2002 I was going to Blockbuster next to my house and kept looking at random horror section vhs covers. They always had random gory looking anime there and one of them was Crying Freeman, movie and series.
Man, I remember watching this late at night when there was nothing else good running anymore on TV. The style of that movie really left an impression on me, so much so that I would always remember it once in a while.

This didn't get a US release until last year? Wow! I remember going to see this movie at one of the last little underground pit cinemas in Piccadilly circus in London when it came out in 1995 (it's closed now, and turned into a gentlemen's club) on a rainy monday night. Had read the Manga comic first, and it differs in a couple of aspects, but not too many. It is unsurprisingly, well known in Europe, and commonly available in all formats. Was nice to see Mark Dacascos make a comeback in John Wick 3: Parabellum. Hope he gets a few more high profile gigs. Was a big fan of his in the 90s and saw practically all of his movies.
The only difference this movie has from the anime, The Sons of the Dragon are supportive of Yo, and Emu joined the organization as Yo's partner and lover. And the Sons operate in a more Robin Hood type of a organization. Still I loved this movie, even without the symbolic/artistic nudity that is present from the manga & anime.
Ok so I was always a fan of the movie and Mark and Julie. Also great cinematography with great lighting and locations which the director repeated in Brotherhood of the wolf. Funny I didn't know Ron Perlman dubbed the voice of Karyo! Btw before Crying Freeman, Gans did a movie called Necronomicon ('93) based on H.P. Lovecraft stories and SFX by no other than Tom Savini!
Dacascos is also in Brotherhood of the Wolf. And funny it didn't get an official release in the US, yet i did rent it on VHS back when it came out from the video store and even own a copy on vhs
no mention of the cool way Yo disposes of his gun after each kill. He twists a part of the magazine that sticks out which activates a explosive charge, which he then just throws the gun away and it blows up
I was a big fan of Crying Freeman back in the day. This is better than both HK versions. I saw Dragron from Russia (first HK name in the west) when I was in HK but didn't see Killer's Romance until years later.

Last thing I remember Yo owned a cursed sword and when he tossed it into the ocean from his organizations submarine... a thrashing in the water began and a freaking great white shark leapt out of the water, landing dead on the deck with the sword in it's skull... head... (Do sharks have skulls?) anyway the handle of the sword facing Yo. I mean shiiiiit that would be awesome to see on film.

IMO Drive is the definition of a cult classic.
The directors cut adds a bit to the story but the music during the fight scenes are horrific. The other version's music are far better.
Its also directed by the same guy who did the Guyver movies and one of the most underrated American martial arts films.
Drive is fantastic.

no mention of the cool way Yo disposes of his gun after each kill. He twists a part of the magazine that sticks out which activates a explosive charge, which he then just throws the gun away and it blows up

I was a big fan of Crying Freeman back in the day. This is better than both HK versions. I saw Dragron from Russia (first HK name in the west) when I was in HK but didn't see Killer's Romance until years later.

I really need to finish this manga. Last thing I remember Yo owned a cursed sword and when he tossed it into the ocean from his organizations submarine... a thrashing in the water began and a freaking great white shark leapt out of the water, landing dead on the deck with the sword in it's skull... head... (Do sharks have skulls?) anyway the handle of the sword facing Yo. I mean shiiiiit that would be awesome to see on film.

This movie actually kinda looks phenomenal. Mark Dacascos when used right is pretty badass. Brotherhood of the Wolf was amazing.
Any kid born in the early 90s can tell you who Mark Dacascos is without even referring to Iron Chef America.
