@hecate235 : I gues he's testing Diego thinking "oh darn it! I'm your father, isn't that time to FINALLY tell me the truth??"

And Zorro is an archetype of the Scarlet Pimpernel.

Batman barely existed. Adam West is what bought Batman into recognition. Zorro came into its own right through this series

@childhoodcontinues Yeah, caught the bit with the guitar string, too. Think Alejandro only hoped Diego was Zorro in 1x07 / 1x08. But now, his suspicions have been raised. He still gives Diego grief in episodes through the rest of the season. Is it that he just can't help it? Or is he testing?

Also, I bet this episode is one of the "pro" instances when Alejandro is thinking Diego might be Zorro - he noticed that the guitar string had been intentionally mistuned! He's probably wondering if Diego used that as an excuse to "go to bed" so he could go investigate Benito's report of Zorro riding toward the mission at San Gabriel!

It's there in Spanish, which sadly I don't speak, if you type in the English title of the episode. Adds a touch of realism to see Diego speaking in Spanish, of course!

My absolute favorite show. Heh, I find myself stuck with some of Sgt. Garcia's songs in my head often. Such as the one where he is bragging that the Sgt's make the army go. :)

In the scene with the guitar if Alejandro haven't guessed yet that Diego is Zorro (in episode Monastario sets a trap) then at least he's closer to the truty about his son.

Disney's first cat fight. And a pity it's an incomplete episode.

I don't think they had CGI in 1957... or 1825, for that matter...

I don't know about Alejandro starting to suspect that Diego is Zorro in this episode; he might think that Diego simply used a broken string as an excuse to not have to spend time his father (which is more or less the truth), pretty typical behaviour for a son in any age :P What I'm wondering is, does Fray Felipe know that Diego is Zorro? He got quite a few clues in episodes 2, 3 and 4. Even though he rants against Zorro, it's suspicious that he went straight to the de la Vega hacienda when logically his first move should've been to report the murder at the cuartel. Maybe he was warning Diego and giving him a chance to clear himself?

"It is very strenuous, playing the guitar." I just learned how to knit recently, and let me tell you - no matter how much fun it is, something that demands a lot of the same wrist and hand movements time after time can make you feel like you're about to twist your wrists off. Plus, my mom plays guitar - I bet she's sometimes felt like her fingers were about to blister after playing for a while! I can understand why Diego'd get tired quick - even if Alejandro scoffs!

Remember that in that time only very rich and noble people could afford to do leisure activities all day, like playing the guitar. I think Don Alejandro was meant to say that; he tried to take Diego out of his bubble and make him involved in more serious matters.

"It's very strenuous playing the guitar..." Diego's pride is obviously pricked, and if he was not playing this little game, it makes me wonder how he would have TRULY reacted to that comment. LOL... Does anyone else wonder that? How would this have all played out if Diego had never been Zorro? If he had come back and just been himself all along? Instead of clothing himself in that of the fox, he HAD put on the skin of the Lion? His father would have been proud of him, he would have gotten married (probably right away - to whom, I'm not going to guess, Elena possibly), but would he have led himself to death right away? Or would he have led them all to victory single handed? Someone, please, play this guessing game with me!!!

Nine months late, but I'll bite.
If Don Diego had charged straight in and tried to unseat Monastario right off the bat, he may not have had the full support of the other Dons (some might still have been on the fence, and they all had a great deal to lose). Plus, he would have heard Don Nacho got nicked for trying much the same thing. So, even if he did start off with a bluster, Monastario would have done something about him soon enough - it's clear, however, that Monastario can't best him with a blade - but unlike Zorro, which Monastario saw as "sport" and did not have a full time public face, and no ties to threaten, Don Diego has family, his home, and his friends. Monastario is vicious and unscrupulous in his own right - he'd burn the de la Vega Hacienda to the ground if Don Diego got too problematic for him, and probably stage it as an Indian raid, thus using that as an excuse to seize and/or kill the Mission Indians for whatever purpose.
Until the wife and daughter of Don Nacho were taken by Captain Monastario, total support by the people for revolution was simply not there, making revolt a hard sell. Not that it would matter THAT much, as the Mexican War of Independence was nearly complete, and Captain Monastario would probably be replaced in 8-12 months anyway (along with the entire Garrison), if he politely surrendered to Mexican forces.
If he didn't, Monastario, Garcia, and all the other soldiers would be slaughtered like pigs by the incoming Mexican military forces, anyway.
So, yeah, in that reality, we have a likely dead Don Diego, all the other Dons disenfranchised to a degree (and any that could, selling their fortunes and returning to Spain), Monastario dead or returned to Spain anyway (making life better for the people, "patience bearing sweet fruit" to paraphrase), and Los Angeles in Mexican possession, just as it was in History.
That's what really gets me, too - they're less than a year from Mexico owning Los Angeles, and Monastario would likely be run out of the territory or made a POW. And they set Zorro during this time? I would have dialed it back to about 1814 or so - the suffering looking to continue for several years rather than a few months.

Yes Alejandro Vegas there are many theories and story possibilities from what outcomes never occurred :D
