Thank you for sharing the work you do! It’s so nice to see younger generations carry forward traditional skills. Additionally, I appreciate the sensible refurbishment of existing structure using natural components.
So many today choose to “improve” their constructions by demolishing the existing material, discard it at a landfill, then replace the product with various synthetic plastics, metal alloys, or composites.
I would imagine the structures you are repairing have stood strong more than 75 years, and through your restoration, will remain usable for many decades more.

“Mesmerizing” is the description for me. I can’t take my eyes off the wood when it’s being chiseled or planed. And all those measurements that you must take again and again. These are just beautiful and so worth knowing about. It’s wonderful that so much still-good wood is still useful and can be used for the future. Thank you for these videos and the work that you do. I really wish that I was able to apprentice as a carpenter in Japan. I think that, once I got passed being overwhelmed by the goals, I would have a lot of fun doing this.

What wood do you use for the little wedges? Is there something specific that was traditionally used.

The wedges are made from Japanese oak. Durable and hard.
