The second version is definitely more legible. I like the energy the first one has though. I wonder what it would look like if the text or maybe background were overlayed with an image like soil. Might tie in the elements and allow the text to stand out from the background. Nice work.
In the words of the great Wolfgang Weingart "What's the use of being legible, when nothing inspires you to take notice of it?". If its between being legible and being interesting, I'll choose interesting! But if I chose legibility, I think that would be a good idea to keep it cohesive and increase legibility!
