Their 1991 ACC Tournament final- Duke/UNC III in 1991- is still the only time CBS has ever broadcast the ACC Tourney in any capacity

Duke had a bye in the 1st round of the ACC tournament because of violations that occurred in the Bob Wade era. Part of the sanctions included a TV ban and because the entire ACC tournament is televised they were prohibited from participating in the tournament. They also had a post season ban but that does not apply to conference tournaments only the NCAA and NIT(At the time)

UNC owns a better record over Duke, and Duke winning is over half of all the videos on you're channel...can you add more UNC wins?

Zipporah Thecushite Bill Guthridge was not fired he retired also after coaching the team for three years. So no Al McGuire was wrong.

huskerfan50 You are right. Al McGuire was right too. I don't take the word "fired" literally. Gutheridge was only 62, only coached 3 seasons, and had an impressive winning record. Those are abnormal retirement conditions.
Gutheridge left either because it was the plan all along for him to be the temporary coach so a more permanent coach wouldn't have to live under the shadow of Dean Smith or Gutheridge left because even though his team reached the Final Four, UNC had had a poor regular season and the handwriting was on the wall that the next few years were going to be brutal. Heck, Gutheridge could have been forced out for reasons that never became public and they let him save face by retiring, we will never know.
Al McGuire was smart enough to know that Dean Smith's replacement could be a winning coach, so the fact that a winning coach only lasted 3 years like McGuire said means he was right.
