Really good point. They started fighting basically around the same time and are very close in age. The difference between Poirier and Islam is that Poirier has taken so much damage over his career that it’s added up over time while Islam has been relatively unscathed in his career.
I know, BUT a guy who has fought in two weight classes, but he's also had 30 fights in the UFC (13 more than Islam) and fought the best of the best, a better resume than Islam's by FAR! And Poirier has taken a lot of damage in those as well, and I know it's 13 more fights so that shows why BUT that damage does really play a big factor in those fights at the very end of his career
Anyway Jon Jones is the worst fighter you can call as a GOAT Juice up retar*ed fighter, clearly lost to Reyes, juice up against old DC,Ducking Tom Aspinall,Scared to fight backup fighter short notice.
I think there are two types of ways of dominating an opponent and that is to either completely outclass the opponent or do what Merab does. So in a way it can be considered domination because his opponents just look defeated, but like you said it's more just the opponent getting drowned, not outclassed. Like even when Merab wins a round you always get the impression that if the opponent just landed 1 or 2 big strikes they would win the round. His opponents and especially Umar have just looked so much better than Merab it's crazy, but the cardio is unbeatable and his ability to maintain great body language and the way he taunts his opponents honestly wins him a lot of rounds. The biggest knock on GSP imo would be his level of competition and also the fact that after a point, GSP became a lay and pray king that didn't get finishes. I know decisions aren't an inherently bad thing and some may bring up Volk having many decisions, but 4 of those were against some of the greatest fighters ever in Max and Aldo. The same can't be said for GSP's opponents. Volk also wasn't out here laying and praying people either.
I agree, as much as I love Merab, Umar looked better than him, and we also just saw the best Petr Yan AFTER the Merab loss as well... I was going to the the lay and pray part about GSP but I believe a lot of people kind of know that already about him, but still a great flaw that I should've mentioned! And yes, going to a decision isn't a bad thing like you said but when you're looking at Volk and others around that weight class, there aren't many fighters who just lay and pray

Excuse me for the yapping: Bro that ain't no old Poirier that Islam fought. The Poirier that Islam fought was farrr better and more prepared than the Poirier that Khabib fought. As for the Volk rematch, it was def short notice and I get that but Islam didn't beat him because Volk gassed out, Islam and his team utilized one of Volk's biggest weaknesses, kicks, it was a really great gameplan, but I still understand it's not as impressive as the first fight. Moicano is short notice but it's also kinda not and people act like it was only short notice for Moicano, but it goes both ways and one had nothing to lose and the other had everything to lose if he so much as let Moicano out of the first round. However, Moicano did have an advantage over Islam in numerous ways, such as sharing the same coach with Arman, training for a southpaw, training with Poirier, and having more knowledge on Islam than Islam had on him due to the nature of Islam being champ of his division and someone Moicano would have obviously watched closely whereas Islam and his team discussed not being familiar with Moicano aside from 1 fight they watched in preparation. Islam and Moicano also both trained for RELATIVELY similar fighters, it's not like Moicano was prepping for a pure kickboxer and suddenly had to fight with Islam, no, Dariush is a good grappler and Moicano trained for that. Islam is obviously different from Dariush, but then again, Moicano also presents different challenges from Arman, so y'know. I believe the Moicano win was on the level of Khabib's win over Gaethje, because the difference in skill on the ground between Moicano and Gaethje is night and day.
I do agree with what you said about the gameplan going into the Volk rematch, and even though it was a far better Poirier than the one that fought Khabib, I still believe it is a good win but it is slightly overrated in my opinion because of how "close" Poirier made it... I know he had success BUT he was still down 3-1 going into the fifth round and Islam was winning that last round, still a good win but not as good as people rate it. And I get that it was/wasn't short notice Moicano BUT when I look at two fighter who are fighting each other on short notice, I don't think it matters if their training for similar fighters or what not, or who they're training for, training with and what not... Whoever is the better fight will win, and I know it sounds basic and cliche, whoever is better and purely looking at the stats, the better fight will win... Moicano could've been booked to Khabib but then fight Islam on short notice, Islam still would've done the exact same thing to him no matter what. I don't think it's on the level of Gaethje because Gaethje was coming off of the Tony win who ended the win streak, and was "in my opinion" the best Gaethje we have ever seen! I would put the Moicano win on the same level as the McGregor win, without looking into anything else outside of the UFC... hopefully I answered your comment correctly :)
