    Any blanket over the sleeping bag helps keep you warm.
    Wool keeps you warm even if wet.

    Rolling up in a tarp over your sleeping bag cuts the wind and keeps you warmer. A piece of Reflectix under your sleeping pad helps too. Don’t drink alcohol, urinate as soon as you feel your bladder is full. Every minute with a full bladder robs your body of heat, keeping your urine warm.

    True words.
    So far I have NEVER needed my arctic sleeping bag, because my jungle sleeping bag kit is warm enough for winters in the UK. I have a thermal mattress, a liner, and a goretex bivvy.
    The combination of three layers and a mattress has resulted in a JUNGLE sleeping bag being good enough down to about freezing point

    Two sleeping bags definitively works, might be important to consider bag size so they dont flatten each other (always keep the loft), but the army loves that config because the « two bags system»is versatile and keeps you warm

    The idea of a layered sleeping system is long established. I carry sealed sheets for shelter, layering. I carry at least two items of insulation, down, synthetic or wool. I also use a gortex bivy. And a $2 mylar heat reflective blanket. The mylar is a layer above my bivy sack. I use it during -20c or less. The mylar blanket lays underneath a final shelter layer. I eat my dinner an hour before I sleep. My current sleep system is a 0c mummy bag and a 0c quilt, both down. Lightweight and easy to pack. About $200 for both. More versatile than a single item polar bag.

    In basic, I used to sleep in my sleeping bag over my bed covers. Later on it was so cold that I slept in both. And I know this going to piss everyone off but I was cold at Ft. Benning. Later on during the cycle, I would sleep cozily in both bags. My DS didn't saying anything because we all just got up on time and did our shit right. I just want to know why is it bad to sleep in both.

      Because he’s a civilian, and may not know how the military operates. I’m a Marine vet. Our sleep bags were designed to keep down the weight for humping/rucking, and the thinner, summer bag inserted into the thicker winter bag compounds the insulation effectively. Not every utuber knows everything lol. Don’t take my word for it either. You can do a little research on it easily.

    Have a good air mattress or sleeping pad. I sleep cold, so I use an insulated air mattress and a zero-degree bag. I use a sleeping-bag liner, which takes me down about five degrees colder. In addition, I use two Jon-E-Warmers, one by my feet and one near my femoral arteries.

    As a boyscout we only camped in the winter. Usually in snow.
    I was cold for a year then next year I got a better bag. Then I used a wool blanket inside the bag. In the extreme cold I used a hand warmer in a sock. Handwarmer can be a game changer. They cost like $15 and fuel only cost a few dollars for a few seasons. The coils last 2years.

  • @Andrea.1tree
    @Andrea.1tree 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    If you don’t have the extra quilt, or under mattress, there is always the option of foliage. However, one trick I utilize is spreading your campfire coals out the length of your bedding, and allow them to burn at least an hour to warm the ground. Then shift the coals back to your campfire, and voilá! A warm spot to sleep on.

    I bring some hand warmers and throw them in the bottom of the bag. They are about an ounce per warmer and good quality ones last 6-8hours. I do have a -5 degree bag, but for most trips my 25 degree bag + warmers works out significantly lighter and is much more packable. If I expect negative temps every night and the trip is sufficiently long then the warmer bag makes more sense.

    • @BackpackingTV
      @BackpackingTV  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you can keep them both lofty, then yeah. The problem is that the sleeping bag inside the second sleeping bag would be very squished and wouldn't have much loft. I'm sure it's warmer than one bag by itself, it's just not efficient enough to really have it be useful.

    • @lilaluna8922
      @lilaluna8922 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It depends. Sleeping bags might fit some people quite tightly. Then there wouldn't be enough room for a second one. For me it actually just fills the extra space, which makes it so much wormer. But I'm just putting a very lightweight 14°C/57°F down sleeping bag into a -2°C/30°F down sleeping bag. This system kept me very worm down to -10°C/14°F. I could test it any lower since it doesn't get that cold where I live.

      I NEVER sleep with heavy clothes on. I used to, but since I started stripping down to just my underwear ive been warmer. When you get cold and are wearing all of those clothes, it's much harder to heat up all of that material so your energy gets spent on trying and failing to warm your heablvy layers

    • @BackpackingTV
      @BackpackingTV  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      There is a debate on this. I prefer sleeping in just a loose fitting baselayer. As Alexander points out here, it can be inefficient to sleep in extra clothes. But if I'm really cold and my sleeping bag isn't warm enough for the temperatures, I definitely sleep in my down jacket and extra layers.
