Do It Yourself 20 Ton Hydraulic Forging Press

  • I needed a press for the shop to use for blacksmithing. A local store had a 20 ton air assist hydraulic jack on sale and I had a lot of thick wall steel tube, angle iron, and steel plate around the shop. Within a few hours I had welded up the press shown in this video.

I think next it’s time to upgrade the forge cause your steel wasn’t very hot. An ideal forging temperature is a good orange color. Bright orange is even better. Yellow also known as white is perfect if you want to forge weld which is the main use of the hydraulic press. I do like the press idea though. It’s a great concept.

Everyone is hating on it for the slow speed build good for the price and if you want faster get a power hammer and don’t complain. Speed is not everything. I think it’s wonderful and might build one

My guess is that you are using a much underrated air compressor. You need 5.8 CFM @ 90 PSI to get much more efficient results. It would be smart to secure bottom dye as well before you get hurt. You would also have much better results if your steel was hotter before going into the press.... Thanks for the video

I love those air over hydraulic jacks. I will be making a press with my everlast welder and will be using an air over hydraulic jack in it.

Kool set up but i might suggest is get that bottom die secured they can pop out of there like a 5lbs bar of soap and at that level will take your teeth right out and to the others it looks slow but wait till something slips out it moves pretty fast and thats experience not conjecture cheers mate

Really good design I'd like to see a way to adjust the drop. I figure that way you will not have to wait on the pump that long. Small down then hard press? Just advise let me know if u do it.

Should heat or preheat the plates in the vise to hold more heat in the steel and give you longer working time. Great job though.

I found it very interesting Bill. Could you show how to instal the the air compressor to the jack?. Thanks

+Robert Navarro This is an air assisted hydraulic jack. The air line and air switch came attached to it. This jack can also be hand pumped like a normal bottle jack. It does use a lot of air and is not very fast moving. However it only cost $70 on sale so I got a cheap press.

Its funny to see how fast the steel cool down under the pressure

You're close, but it needs tweaking. You could fashion a handle that stays affixed to the bleed screw so you can lower it easier. Maybe some springs to help lower it quicker.

its a little slow...but I think it would work great for putting a fuller in knife blades because i need to watch close and keep them straight..so sometimes slow is good

With slow pressing like that, I see the control you have but I think you would need about 50T. I see back in the old days they had hammer presses. A lot less cooling of the steel.

    How mach air for minute?

It is a 220V 5 HP shop compressor at 120 psi. Takes a fair bit of air to run one of these jacks.

Do you have to turn the release knob to release the pressure for every down stroke? Is there away to do it using foot switch or electronically to save time and actions??

Preheating the press plates prior to a pressing will reduce the heat sink/ chilling effect on the part being pressed.

+MrRealgamer777 I use a wire wheel for the spikes. The grinding steps remove the oxide from other knives.

as slow as this is you would be better off just using a hammer and anvil you can't even press the whole piece before it cools down seems like a waist of time really what you do with that someone could probably do with a hammer in half the time

    • @breakerofrocks
      @breakerofrocks ปีที่แล้ว

No, they couldn't. The amount of force involved in pressing something is orders of magnitude beyond what a human being using their arms and an anvil could do.
And I don't mean they could do it on the hammer and anvil but it would take a lot of swinging and sweat but little by little they'd do it. No, the effect of pressing does not work like that. It is a massive amount of force applied to a small area at one time.
Sure, the guy could get the piece hotter or preheat the dies, but what his build here is doing can never be done by a person. Moving material around by hitting its surface areas works with different physics then squeezing the whole of the material's thickness under inescapable force in a second or so. They are fundamentally different processes.
Why do you think presses - of any kind - exist?
