Note to the fella thats been playing for 10 years with all budget guitars. 2 things I've done after 24 years of trying all sorts and the swapping rabbit hole. If you really love any of the budget guitars, upgrade the wiring, nut, tuners, pickups, everything that you'd love an expensive guitar to have. I have an epi les paul custom with lollar P90's I put in thats my primary recording guitar over all my ibanez prestige's and higher end fenders. Its killer and plays amazing. Second, when I didn't find the guitar that I HAD to have, (2002 fender special run strat pearl white with lace sensor gold lipsticks and anodized gold aluminum scratch plate) I put $20 away a week for over a year, and traded 3 of my budget guitars and all the cash I had accrued to pick THE guitar that I can't imagine not having. The best live guitar I've ever played.
First thing I always do is search for a great neck and good feeling bridge since I play a lot of funk and punk type stuff ala Red Hot chili peppers meets the Offspring. It will be worth the wait. While you're accruing that cash, go to all the guitar shops within a 100 mile radius if you can. I got mine from a small mom & pop shop that sold mostly acoustics. But they ended up with that on a trade for a bass, who ended up being in a band with me years later in a festival gig styled band. Just be patient, and don't be afraid to mod the budget ones you really get on with.
Glad you’re hip to that. It’s the stuff!
Being mindful of the number of buffers on my board is something I learned from watching this show. Hearing you guys cover this subject on the Q&A today may merit an episode comparing a board with all buffered bypass pedals vs a board featuring all true-bypass pedals.
There is no such thing as the best guitar as proven by the ever changing on your show ,we as guitarists are all to often justifying the newly acquired guitar as the best I’ve ever had until the next best guitar we’ve ever had long live G.A.S. By the by Australian is an Island Continent, love the latest Gibson that Mick has acquired but i love Dan’s 65 tele .
Thank you Dan & Mick for bringing quality information and wisdom along with a proper dose of lighthearted, good natured fun. I enjoy spending my Monday mornings with you legends and am usually playing my guitar and developing new lesson material right along with your discussion. With gratitude - John ( in Maine )
Thanks for aswering my question. Finally I can say something about it. My pedalboard has become pritty big, some pedals have Buffers build in and some not. So I realized that buffers are the next topic to look at. Thanks again for the answer. I now have an Idea fot what to watch out. Your videos about buffers are next on my list to watch. Have a nice week!
I might have to watch this with the chat recap during my question to watch the panic unfold 😅 I asked because it's my goal for the year to get the JL Two-Rock but needed the info if I needed to use the head without the cab if it was Head only when I aquire it (I'd hope not) but on a somewhat related note it occurred to me I could use the cab from my newly acquired Grandville (impedance allowing) which is based on the Gibson Skylark. Need to rewatch your old episodes on cabs. Fitting analogy the Library of Alexandria
Early 2000s gibson was a GA40, that thing was fun!!! Had the pleasure of spending a few weeks with one back in the day! It was a cool thing to me regardless of the manufacturer :) thanks for all you do!
I use the Duesenberg Les Trem on a couple of my stop tail piece guitars, and the guys are right, it's not a Bigsby and not for dive bombers but those guitars never go out of tune even with lots of whammy use.
One exception to the Les Paul pickguard…..The Gold Top. No pickguard, please!
Guys, I just thought I would post on here seeing I have just watched it. I just received my T shirts today, really nice, stickers too always a plus. It was a shame to have to open the packages they were so beautifully wrapped. Well done to whoever wrapped them. :)
Thank you! That would be either Katherine or Haydn!
On the Princeton/deluxe reverb Topic, Justin Ostrander, Nashville session guitar player gave away one of their session player tricks. Either of those amps on 10, treble on 10 and zero base. Best lead guitar tone ever! I implore you to check it out and debut it on one of your upcoming videos.
Thanks boys.
I use a brown face just like that, it’s the Chris Stapleton that I picked up, just a regular old brown face Princeton but with a 12” speaker and I run the tone on max and it’s glorious with anything plugged in to it. Fat, bright and super articulate, just can’t go wrong with fenders with the treble gunned. I’ve never met a bright switch I didn’t like! Haha
To the guy who has a Tone King Gremlin and is wondering about a Victory V40 upgrade…. I just got a Tone King Falcon Grande , and it’s a beautiful thing. Takes pedals well. Gorgeous reverb. May be worth checking out??
MXR Submachine for an intro to fuzz as well! Its super forgiving and is incredibly versatile, its an intro to 3 three different types of fuzz in my opinion, the clean up is cool, and its an usually noise free fuzz for some reason. Though i am in love with the kangra and the cock fight, the Submachine is still a creative work horse for me. So many riffs!
Mick & Dan, you need to find a ‘72 Fender silver panel Pro-Reverb 2x12 combo and try that up against your deluxe. You’ll be in for a real treat. I got one of these and it is jaw droppingly good - bright switch always on !
"Tallahassee Lassie" - The Flaming Groovies
The huckleberry fuzz is also one to checkout if you can find one.
Hate I missed the live show. Talking about playing nerves, the last time I played with Jason Isbell there was a multi-top ten song writer and including Jason 4 Grammy winners on stage and 5 more in the audience
Hadn’t thought about offering to pay for new strings, that’s a great suggestion (and I do prefer heavier strings). I guess I was in part thinking about the question of comparing two or more guitars…say there are three different model Strats you’re considering, and two of them have strings that are a bit old and a different gauge than you usually play, it might sway you toward the one with the nice strings, when perhaps one of the two with the lesser strings would ultimately be a much better player for you long term. It’s tough, especially with all the distractions going on in a store as well. Anyway thanks for the great answer!
Gutted you got turned down for a Cardiff gig. Would be great to have you in Wales.
If you fancy a real South Wales gig - try the Scala in Merthyr.
In the end I had to be overkill for home player but I bought both LVX and Mercury X and am very satisfied with the sounds. I play and twist knobs. I do understand the crazy presets for showing power of it but those will go lol.
I was having the same thought as Dan with the splittable phase loop - I would also like to offer the suggestion that a tremolo (harmonic or otherwise) on the phased side would do some very fun phasey modulation!

I've got one buffered pedal the boss bd2w. Everything else is true bypass, and I've noticed an improvement having one buffer in the chain of 8 pedals before the amp.
Im 100% making Mick's pick guard bendy note, my message alert tone on my phone🤣
The tram shed in Cardiff is a good venue
Australia is a Continent. And, New Zealand is almost a secret continent part of Oceania and the submerged content Zealandia
1500 micro mesh works AWESOME on a poly neck
Please come to Cardiff 😊
We tried. It was a no!
Watching this later, but I guess a gig is the best reason to miss it live.
I feel exactly the same about Duesenberg. I've had a goldtop Starplayer TV for nearly 10 years now, but it wasnt what I was originally after. What I was after was a Les Paul but couldnt find one that I liked. The Duesy is a great guitar, its the easiest to play that I've ever had and musical ideas just topple out of it.... but its not a Les Paul. Very similar to Dan's Gretsch analogy. As a result, I'm seriously considering moving mine on but I'll be a lot more careful about what I replace it with.
funny what you said about duesenberg. I tried some at the dealer here in Hamburg and I was afraid all the time to damage them. they are so shiny and new.... not my kind.
You're not wrong Mick, as Dan said the term "Australasia" is indeed a thing - refers to the collective land and islands of the southwest Pacific region as a whole. "Oceania" is kind of like a level above that again - referring to Australasia, Melanesia, Micronesia, and Polynesia.
As for 'what continent is New Zealand from', that might have seemed a weird question to many a few years ago but... well, just put "The missing continent that took 375 years to find" into That Google Thing if curious... and interesting things will occur!
But maybe we here in the land of the Hot Cake will just take the Continent of Middle Earth because that does sound much more interesting (maybe... maybe it's actually made out of hot cake? No, that's fine, I'll see myself out...).
speaking of Bukovac, did you see the video where he jams with Joey Landreth? on his channel. Jaw dropping
Eeeeeeeee. Those dooooood. Argh!
Always watch this later. Still at work when this is live.
Is there a way to send a question to an upcoming q&a?
Post here is the easiest way.
Regarding playing position, Tim Pierce uses some special chair. If interested goto his channel and ask him its name.
Hi guys, I play at the Tunbridge Wells Forum regularly and The Factory in Worthing, both great venues that encourage loud guitars with excellent sound engineers! Let me know if I can make an intro or help at all
I think Australasia might be the tectonic plate underneath? Or maybe that's what Oceana is
How did Peterson not call the mini tuner the "Pete"?
Is the SG a vintage or a Custom Shop? Either way glad to see how happy it makes you!
1962, real one. Even says Les Paul on it!
A friend of mine plays with Edwyn Collins and he used a boss DS1, believe it or not, on " A Girl like you"
Why don't you make a show where you put eight boss pedals in a loop and turn they all of.
Put a buffer, always on, before and after the switcher.
Compare the sound with two buffers in the signal chain to when the eight boss pedals (all off) are in the chain between the first and the last buffer.
I calll and name my guitars and consider them friends, I have Winnifred the telecaster, Taylor the Taylor, jay the jazzmaster j masici squier, and Dani D'anjelico. Izzy the Ibanez gio my first friend and the one that gave me a voice in the demonic realms of public schooling in and around Chicago. so like yeah my friends, my girls, my guitars....I dig that metaphor, we fight and we come together often to make symbiotic attempt at making what makes my soul weep with joy as I celebrate this attempt at life I have hear. Sorry to ramble but you guys really keep me company and educate me on delays and great guitar themed knowledge, history and loves I have.....so basically if my grandma was alive and I was living with her again, she woudl say my friends on that TH-cam in reference to you guys and all the guitar and cool contented here, dang I'm rambling....peace be with you all, and much love and music.
Thank you Brick. Big love to you man!
Tweed amps: if you like a raspy sponge….
Australasia is a region
Re the continent of Australia vs NZ debate - I don’t believe every country necessarily needs to be part of one of the continents. NZ is an example of this
keith richards got a humbucker on a tele. doesnt sound crap i promise u 🤣
Could you provide a link to the Tom Bukovac video Dan mentioned ?
Is it this? Mick here. Just googled it th-cam.com/video/n5tS1dlifnY/w-d-xo.htmlsi=Y2Glx39Rp0dAxK34
Thanks Mick. I don't think that's the one. Dan mentioned it was an hour and 15 mins long, the one you linked is 45. Any chance you could ask Dan and maybe share the link in the description ? Ta@@ThatPedalShow
That is the correct link. The section Dan was talking about where Uncle Larry improvises Yellow Brick Road begins around the 38:20 mark.
You are freezing constantly here in Australia with this current stream. Not only that, I can only stream this episode at 360p at present. This happened often in the past with your streams. Last year, after you had a melt down with you net-service provider things improved. But, your feed seems to have reverted to past problems. I have a high end optic fibre to my house, which streams every other youtube stream in HD, not you guys. Perhaps you need to consider a more reliable service provider?
Hello Brian. Unfortunately where we are, a viable alternative does not exist. Simple as that. Apologies.
Sorry but there’s not a big difference tonally between pickups. Record all the pickups exactly the same way, then when played back you’ll hear a subtle to nothing difference between different pickups. All the differences people think they hear with pickups, solid body to semi hollows, analog vs digital gear, all of the thousands of pedals sounding night and day difference is just confirmation bias, believing marketing bs, stupidity, and ignorance.
the dark side of you is that when you (both) point out you loving meat and bones with potatoes you are far from understanding what is it about given that I just stopped watching this video.....
