- Sky News host Rita Panahi reacts to video of a graduation presenter “badly mangling” students names.
The video of the Thomas Jefferson University Nursing graduation went viral after the announcer mispronounced several students' names during the ceremony.
The presenter seemed to struggle to pronounce common names including Stephanie, Elizabeth and Thomas throughout the graduation.
The university has since apologised and explained that the mispronunciation of student’s names was due to the way phonetic spellings were shown on the presenter's name cards.
Ms Panahi compared the graduation ceremony to the ‘Key and Peele’ skit.
“That whole catastrophe reminds of me this classic roll call sketch from ‘Key and Peele,’” Ms Panahi said.
I don't think she can actually read. She was taught by word recognition.
One of the results of DEI in real life...
Yes, they may be 'special needs', in which case it would be cruel to make fun of.
That announcer doesn't know how to read. She's functionally illiterate, plain and simple.
She was trying to pronounce the names correctly so she was likely hyper focused on the pronunciations and ignored the spelling. The one who made the cards is at fault.
Yep yep yep. DEI.
It was deliberate , She was only mangeling White students names
Yep
definitely .. it like getting back at us for mispronouncing immigrant 'Alphabet Names' .. these people are seriously deranged ..
That's it Miss Tellina 😋
Absolutely not true. Alina Binumon was not white.
With that small sample size, how can someone draw a definitive conclusion? 🤷🏽♀️
This is a seat of learning, but they could not find someone who could read?
That's because they're always on a protest.
nursing students aint protesting
What if it was a *SPECIAL NEEDS* person reading out the names?
If I had been a parent there I would have taken the mic from this clown and read the names. Now that was a cause worth protesting over!!!!
She was reading the phonic pronunciations on the cards that were give to her. At most she is guilty of taking so long to figured out the problem with them. It's more of a critical thinking issue. She trusted too much in what was given to her and didn't second guess the cards.
But if I mispronounce an African name I am a racist.
Its a DEI hire so be careful what you say about her.
I'll make it my mission to mispronounce Arrŕfrrrŕiccckkkennn names🤪🤪🤪😉
@@user-vk4el9oy6m 😐 the name announcer is ret@rded
And a White Supremacist.
YOU HIT THE NAIL ON THE HEAD...
When you focus on identity politics instead of curriculum.
DEI hire
Math Scores from Harvard & Columbia are LOWER now than their Grandparents w/only a HS diploma. It shows
If I were one of the parents, I would have walked up, taken the mic, and took over. Absolutely pathetic.
Wait, English WAS her native language? Were she mangling white kids names only?
Exactly she did that on purpose. On purpose or she’s STUPID
Alina Binumon was not white. Fact Check
@@hiho8084 oh, Alina will sue for discrimination then.
This may very well be a *SPECIAL NEEDS PERSON* reading out the names. Please don't ridicule, until facts are ful!y known.
@@ingela_injeelaThen the special needs person shouldn’t be reading this out.
try having to work with people like this
A degree from that university must be really worthwhile having.
DEI behind the microphone.
She was just reading what was given to her.
100%
D.E.I = Didn't Earn It
All deliberate .. It's like them getting back at us trying to pronounce immigrants 'Alphabet Names' .. they think it's funny in some deranged way ..
Your lack of IQ and backbone is noted, little racist.
I would have refused to walk until they pronounced my name right
What if it was a *SPECIAL NEEDS* person reading out the names?
Why is a special needs person working at a university
@@ingela_injeela like your good self?
@@stephenterrilltraveller Sure, if you take pleasure in inuendo, I will gladly declare myself as having special needs.
@@stephenterrilltraveller You seem like a nice person.
A disgusting insult to the hard working students.
What if it was a *SPECIAL NEEDS* person reading out the names?
@@ingela_injeela Then they shouldn't be tasked with something beyond their capabilities.
@ingela_injeela good for them, if it were me I would be pissed. Get my damn name right fkn clowns
i bet thomas is going to face backlash for daring to talk back.
Whose reading this. My lord.. And these people are teaching our children..
It was an error on behalf of the administration team. They handed her phonetic versions of the names, which made it hard to read.
Exactly!
Its like that Key&Peele skit, but for real 🤣
I saw that skit. It was hilarious.
Nice way to ruin a great moment for those young people. Good on Thomas but how awful that he's the only one who actually said anything.
What if it was a *SPECIAL NEEDS* person reading out the names?
@@ingela_injeelawell then why tf is a **SPECIAL NEEDS** person reading names for a ceremony?
I think it was deliberate. Or the person was drunk. I wish we had the university's response to this.
What if it was a *SPECIAL NEEDS* person reading out the names?
@@ingela_injeela
Why the hell were they reading them out then?
What, do you think pointing out it may be *SPECIAL NEEDS PERSON* is going to make us all go ‘oh, I’m so sorry, please don’t get your friends to attack us in every way, shape and form’?
It isn’t. The Graduation Ceremony is, to my understanding, an extremely important and pivotal moment for every student graduating. To mess it up, regardless of the intent behind this rather monumental cock-up, is obscene.
@@themightyalpaca313 Obscene? Really? I see this so differently. These students behaving so dignified in this situation speaks so clearly, that they haven't only acquired academic points, but they have acquired real character.
@@ingela_injeela The students aren't behaving in a dignified way - they are just too shocked to react -except that one guy who -rightfully so- said his name forcefully and LOUDLY.
@@ingela_injeela They shouldn't be doing it! I'm all for empowering those who need it - but this is not the time or place to have an exercise in tolerance. You don't empower one person at the expense of a WHOLE COLLEGE GRADUATION CLASS!
She should be fired. Deliberate.
If you pay all that money and name not pronounced correctly for family and keepsake????? No way
How many boxes did that woman have to check?
KJP's sister
Just the two related to having a lack of critical thinking and never questioning things. She was just reading the phonetics from the cards without thinking they could be wrong.
@@siral2000 That is also called being dumb.
@@cvn6555 Lacking critical thinking and being dumb are two different things. The same for not questioning materials and being dumb. That being said she may still be dumb. It's just not the same thing that I said.
This is just like the sketch from Key & Peele!
A aron!😂😂😂😂
@@robertcarter8868 come on, D-nice!
@@RandomNPC001 ok b lawkey!😉
The woman reading the students' names must have been a DEI hire. Explains it all, but add in arrogance, stupidity, and a gross failure to respect the students who paid good money to attend the university. Ah, but nothing will be done about her.
Who else thinks she dis-pronounced on purpose?
I don’t. I think you’re giving her far too much credit. It is all about pure unadulterated stupidity.
I would say she is a DEI hire with Black credentials which generally dont include literacy.
That was the pronunciations on the cards she was given. She was just slow on noticing the problem and didn't check the cards ahead of time. Critical thinking isn't known to be amazing at collage. She apologized during the event after she found out/was informed.
@@siral2000cool Ive got a bridge to sell you
How embarrassing for that school.
Embarrassing that someone did not take the mic away
My name is Dylan Mulvaney.
That is pronounced "Mentally Ill".
I attended my daughter's graduation from Columbia in a place outside Columbia. The students were not announced in any clear order corresponding to the alphabetical order in the book.
It was probably Dylan that pushed Peru over the edge 😂
How is that even possible ?
She had to be doing that on purpose. Surely no one is this stupid.
Nope. She just didn't question why the pronunciations on her cards where so weird. Matches a lot of higher learning. "Think what you are told and don't question it."
That's DEI for you.
All those graduates should sue for their total tuition back for the whole time. They can claim that if the names are so botched, they may be in jeopardy of having been miseducated in the first place.
A big hurrah to the leaders of Peru for standing up to the lunatics. Now we in the rest of "The West" need to get our leaders to grow some b*lls and follow suit. The sooner the better.
Being classified as a mental illness has never been a signal for people to cause anyone harm. On the contrary, it garners you sympathy and a means to get the help you need.
Circus rolls on
This sounds like someone in 1st grade attempting to read.
The lady who read speaks totally clear english and read an apology that was coherent
Surprised the black privileged crowd complaining about cultural appropriation
Jesus… your white fragility is noted.
Okay, but illiteracy is a serious issue and should not be made fun of.
@@AminJones Yes, but it is 100% acceptable to make fun of an illiterate being given the task of reading off student names at their graduation ceremony. The entire episode is hilarious and so very indicative of why DEI is crap. Here is a person that cannot read, cannot pronounce phonetic sounds, consequently may be assumed to be as dumb as a stump, and they stick her out there to ruin the ceremony. All so they, the admin, can feel good about themselves.
So this evens things out for you? Colonialism ,slavery , residential schools , prison complex, police killings. Only a rabid white supremacist would use this as a 'gotcha ' moment
A A Ron in real life.
Wow! 😳I wasn't able to finish college due to caring for my mom, but I have more of an education then these people by reading many books over the past 30 years to educate myself on various subjects.
The speaker can't read!!!!
This is the real Key&Peele skit, starring Mr Garvey, the sub teacher.
Key&Peele was funny, this is a joke.
A-A-ron!
Two points: (1) The university blames phonetic cue cards for the problem. If that was so, why did replacing this announcer with another solve the problem? (2) What kind of nursing school fails to understand how important correct pronunciation is in nursing? Getting names, drugs, treatments or medical orders wrong can mean a patient dies.
When I graduated the announcer went over every graduates name before hand to make sure he was pronouncing it correctly! Same DEI hire there probably gets paid 200 k a year and you wonder WHY!!!! Our tax dollars at waste!!!!
I think I might move to Peru.
These kids are so respectful. How is it they all kept a straight face? Congrats on your graduation, by the way!🎉
LOL it's like Key & Peele nailed what was gonna happen.
Has the literacy level dropped that low??
What a clowns world we live in.
You forgot about A A Ron🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
This is more common than you think...
Many high schoolers and college students have difficulty reading and pronouncing words correctly (no thanks to public education)....but this one ???
I wouldn't want her to be my nurse...
D.e.i. hire
Ah my aching sides, comedy genius!
A mind is a terrible thing to waste.
They studied hard and they got this. Thats disgusting
Something straight out of KEY AND PEELE sketches
The sheer bloody rudeness of it all. If the uni justifies it by having phonetics on the cue card, just how thick must the reader be?
This was TOTAL DISRESPECT NOT AN ACCIDENT… THE UNI SHOULD HAVE PUT SOMEONE ELSE IN IMMEDIATELY. No one could mispronounce all those names so badly and why need phonetics on simple names like Jessica and megan
How the hell did students know whose name she was screwing up? Unless they were queued up in the correct order. I have heard that they have bad educational standards in The States.
Alphabetical order. She was reading the name phonetics on the cards that were given to her. This is more about critical thinking of teachers then education. It took her too long to realize the problem with the cards.
Apparently there wasn't a practice walk prior to this event? This was insulting to the students.
Uni did a DEI hire to announce names.
The gay guy wasn’t going to let her get away with it 😂😂
Did Peru fumigate after Dylan left?
The Peruvian people were kind to Dylan because they probably felt sorry for Dylan.
Maybe the Peruvian people are just kind people.
This seems on purpose
Who is this?
"Toh moo may" 😂
"It's Thomas"
"Don't you sass me! Your name is Toh moo may!" 🤣
Another bunch of bright ideas to "better things" by today's colleges and universities. What did they think they were doing here?
What if it was a *SPECIAL NEEDS* person reading out the names?
When the brains were handed out this person was out smoking weed instead of in the classroom but they hired her anyway for the DEI agenda!!!
@@ingela_injeelaYou keep saying this. Why would they hire a retard to read names? Just to ruin people's day?
That is beyond the definition of DEI hire. 😂
Should they also hire "special needs" people to anchor the news, or answer 911 calls?
Sorry to disappoint you, but their are some jobs that some people can have and some that they can't. Should we hire a blind person to drive the bus so they feel included? Should we hire a person in a wheel chair to be on a pit crew? Everybody has to feel included right, no matter what it does to everyone else. You are a joke.
@@ingela_injeela Why would anyone get a special needs person to perform that highly important task, when it's such an important life moment for the graduates to hear their names proudly called???
A little proficiency here. Not everyone should be called on to do everything. You wouldn't like to be rushed to emerg to find your doctor a special needs person.
@@ingela_injeela This was an important life moment for the graduates to hear their names said loudly and proudly. They should have chosen a person capable of doing that, and if that person was special needs no problem. IF they had been able to do the job.
I am sure a llama will gladly kiss Dylan !
This is a great example of what public education does for our country.
This has to be a setup.
She was making fun of when English speakers when we can't say different names
Well, Peru is sort of right. Dysphoria is a recognised mental condition after all.
Thomas? She can't say THOMAS???
How does one mispronounce anything written phonetically?
Go ahead, little kids. Play cute. The real world is going to give you a master class on it, and you'll beg through useless tears to go back to the safety of Toe-maze Letaqua Bjeerfsoni University.
Likely a prank by whoever made the cards that went to far.
Let's hope their Degrees are not as bad
Bravo Peru
Two Ronnies - Four Candles
Sounds like Dei at its best
Wow, Im amazed she got Victoria correct. DEI pick for who to read names?
What if it was a *SPECIAL NEEDS* person reading out the names?
She's a native english speaker, English is her first language and she pronounced EVERYONE's name badly, so I honestly think she wasn't doing this on purpose.
I want my country back. If I was a parent attending the graduation I would ask for at least a partial refund. If I was a student and the person mangling all the names was on the platform I would grab the mic, pronounce my name correctly and then volunteer to read all the rest of the names. It's not academia. It's MACADAMIA, totally nuts!
Hooked on Ebonics?
“Thomas” joining the ranks of Cher, Bono, Madonna, and Prince. I hope his diploma just said “Thomas” with no other names. 🤣
And they pay this person to teach students??? My daughter just called the names at her college for their graduation and she somehow managed to get them all correct...
Why wasn't she replaced, that is ruining a very special day for these young people
I watched a documentary a few years ago and I believe it was called Idiocracy. It made me laugh at the time and I thought no way this could happen. Now I'm just waiting for my plants to dry out so I can water them with Gatorade 😂😂😂😂
This is what happens when they hired someone who could not read. She had names phonetically spelled out and she still could r read it
this has to be a prank of some sort
She must have been a TJU graduate?
She was trying to emulate her favorite Key & Peele skit, "Substitute Teacher - Mr. Garvey" 🤣
Aaron and Bilacki !!! Hahahaha
A A Ron, Dee Nice
but... but.. mispronouncing someone's name is a microaggression, isn't it?...
Some people can't help being stupid . Totally Made a fool of herself 😆
WTF were they thinking having someone who can’t do the job ruining the graduation ceremony?
Devil's advocate here, IF the ID cards had phonetic spelling with NO regular writing backup, that might throw some people.
I saw the “Tamron” show that explained the names were written in a phonetic fashion .
Schools should be held accountable to higher standards of excellence
I think this speaker would make a terrific, next president of Harvard University.
The mispronunciation is a psychic manifestation of the moral and intellectual chaos that characterizes contemporary education, when established boundaries and structures are torn apart. The announcer has lost confidence in the fundamental laws of language and is lost in an existential fog of nonsense syllables. It sounds like a black magic incantation.
I don't know about all that but this is her level of education.
It's probably part of the process how they now educate kids to be tolerant about everything.
Even if you get shamed and embarrassed on such important occasion you just keep smiling and take it like a tool.
I hope they the white kids file a lawsuit against her and the school for not stopping this
