Why I Went into Medicine: Gary Steinberg, MD, PhD

Thousands and thousands of times, brain surgeon Gary K. Steinberg has done one of medicine’s most difficult jobs. Why? He fell in love. In this video, Steinberg, chair of Stanford Health Care’s Department of Neurosurgery, director of the Stanford Moyamoya Center, and the founder and do-director of the Stanford Stroke Center, explains his gradual evolution of study from psychiatry to psychobiology to neurology- and finally to cerebrovascular neurosurgery. And he shares the mental strategy that supports his ability to perform this delicate work of blood vessel repair in the brain. “It’s daunting,” he said, “but it’s also creative.”

Dr Steinberg has operated on my Down Syndrome son with a Moya Moya disease and has prolonged his life. He is now 21 years of age.To say that we are grateful for this man's existence is an understatement .Brilliant, humane empathetic dynamic leader in the world of neurosurgery today. Anyone who is trained in Moya Moya has no doubt been trained under or via other modalities of Dr Steinberg. Our planet has been graced and blessed by his presence.

I was a patient of Dr. Steinberg's back in the 90's when he treated me following a stroke caused by an AVM. He is a compassionate doctor and his expertise is without parallel. His entire team is incredible. I am thankful everyday that I was referred to him.
