They would rather eat them and use that energy to create a new litter than to let a predator get them. New Moms are more unpredictable and can eat them for reasons only she knows. It doesn't matter if she knows you. She doesn't know what you MIGHT do to or with her babies. She didn't listen, picking up a baby and later that night, I came upon a haunting miniature crime scene. I immediately knew what happened. It was upsetting but the fact that this owner literally just said "Oops.."I moved, didn't tell her and kept the pair of hamsters until they passed away of old age.
