I have a 22' boat. Had that happen to me once while i was about 6 miles out. My line got tangled on the propeller so i turned off the engine and cut it off. When i tried starting the engine it wouldnt start anymore. I radioed the coast guard and they told me they was gonna send a chopper out. In hawaii, anything past 3 miles they will only rescue the crew and not the boat. After about 20 minutes i got it fired up. I just forgot to place it back in neutral😂.
Hot tip, with two-stroke motors, is they don't like idling or slow trolling it will always foul up the plug or plugs they are designed to used flat out, just keep spare plugs in ya kit
Spare plug, plug spanner, WD40 and a couple of dry rags in ziplock bags. Not forgetting the all important Duct tape will help you get out of a lot of problems Rod. Dont take up much room or weight in the boat either. Glad you made it home ok tho mate.

Cheers Mark, yep was not the best place for it to happen but with some mates it was all pretty safe. I think it was the high Octane fuel with lots of slow trolling and stopping. I gave the plugs a quick clean when I got home and it started up first pull!

Unplug one of your kill switch cables underneath the housing and try to fire it up! Once I was trying to fire up my secondary engine, an Yamaha 2T 15hp..spent about 1 hour trying to make it start.. but as soon as I disconnected one of the cables from the kill switch it started on the first try!

We had the same problems with our two stroke once, wasn't the plugs. It was the ignition coil that stopped working. Easy to replace but you need one spare. Nice vid anyways, keep 'em coming :)
This issue turned out to be a fuel line leak. Was dependent on how the line plugged in and would come and go at the worst times, so took a while to diagnose. Hasn’t missed a beat since though👍
Yo buddy, thank God you ok. Marine radio is a must. I have a boat engine failure before due to electrical fire at sea. Worst part the boat doesnt have a radio, proper life vest, flare, etc... was lucky its closer to home and phone service was ok. took the whole day to tow the boat in. Never go on that boat ever again. I think you should bring extra spark plug just in case mate. Those thing if lucky can last quite a while but some are just worn out by the sea. Great to see you back home safely. Cheers buddy, it just one of those day as a fisherman. Keep on posting brother.
Great video if you ask me because in reality things dont always plan out. And people dont always tell you the bad. Like you said lesson learnt here is to make sure equipment's are all up and running and most importantly going out that far with mates. Great video Rod! Yeew🙌🏽
Have you had a look at the kill switch? had the same thing happen in the past, if water gets in it stops working, it definitely sounds like no spark at all. Fould plugs would try to start and unusual to just happen all of a sudden, the water in fuel is unlikely too as it has fuel in the carbs and would have started and ran badly after... definitely sounds like a kill switch... Great vids mate
Make sure you have a water fuel separator and if you keep your boat outside make sure the fuel tank is at a slight angle so the rain does not pool up. We had an issue last year where the fuel tank collected puddles around the gas cap and took on quite a bit of water. Now I always prop them up a tiny bit so water cannot pool around the top.
You are a lot braver than me heading out that far but hey, that's what dreams are made of. At least there were plenty of boats around to help you out :)
Yeah spare plugs in your kit helps. I had just about got swept out in a channel because of plugs. I just managed to change them and start up as the coast guard arrived. Embarrassing! But my outboard bloke reckons next best bet it to pull the white wire out of the ignition. Reckon 9 times out of 10 it's the kill switch playing up. You should do an engine diagnosis video!!
Was feeling you brother!! Especially after seeing turtles marlin. Cracking day though and certainly not a waisted trip. A mans gotta have adventures!! Good lessons

If the only thing you changed is running it on 98, then I am almost certain that will be the root cause. 98 is a slower igniting and slower burning fuel by design, and is common to make old-style 2-strokes run poorly. I have chainsaws and outboards that will only start and run well on regular unleaded.
@@rokkitkit Higher octane fuels don't mix well with some 2 stroke oils, this could be why your plugs got fouled. Hey got a tip check the direction of the gas line and make sure it is pumping gas into the motor and not out I had that happen to me and I couldn’t get my motor started then I switched it and it started like 2nd pull
Not everyone is mechanically oriented but once you start messing with outboards and engines in general, it's not a bad idea to read on some material about them or even carry a small handbook with some basic tips and troubleshooting advise. They are very simple and reliable machines. Edit: now having watched the video i see you know a thing or two haha, good idea carrying a small emergency kit to solve little problems. I would bet you got water in your fuel but in any case let us know what was it...
All engines need regular engine oil change. We did twice a month as the boat goes out four times a day with each trip is an hour away. I also have rescued many small crafts due to , out of gas, situation !
RoKKiT KiT , I see where you say it was just fouled plugs. What did the plugs look like? Thick carbon? Was the gap closed up, or was the fouling between the center electrode and the side of the plug? You say they cleaned up easily? Somehow, that doesn't seem right. Typically, fouled plugs will act up for awhile, popping, running rough, etc., before shutting off the motor. Did you have any symptoms like that? It looked like your engine just went dead all at once. I would suspect the kill switch or something electrical. Power packs often die when they get hot, then work fine once they cool off. Water in the fuel or a total fuel restriction could also do that. I once had a brand new defective squeeze bulb do that to me. Stay close into shore, splash through some waves, and make your next run an extended one to see if it happens again. Better to spend a little time testing than get into a bad situation. Best wishes for many more safe adventures! Thanks for sharing.
My mechankc told us the complete opposite. Mkre crap un unleaded same as any engine it gunks it up. Premium cleans the motor and burns a lot cleaner . Id have to vlean the plug every start. Now with 98 its been sitting 3 months second pull it will fire and run like a dream and its a 20 odd year old donk. I can bet money on it.
Here is a tip,,, one time i was snowmobiling and bumped the emergency toggle- stalled i didn't know why -- it didn't fall off, but was dislodged a bit. always pull that off and put it back on.
Yep I did a check and reconnect of the kill cord but no luck. In the end I’ve narrowed it down to a fuel line connection issue. Took forever to diagnose as it was so intermittent 👍
Great vid Rod, it shows that not every fishing trip goes to "script" and you need a back up plan just in case. We're all glad you got back ok and that your reel stayed attached by the line. Sux for you that you didn't get a marlin but next you will for sure Mate. Was it a fouled spark plug Bro?
Cheers Bill, yea I think high Octane fuel with lots of slow trolling and stopping. I gave the plugs a quick clean when I got home and it started up first pull! 👍
The factory fuel lines that come on mercury and Tohatsu's have an inner lining that wears away after time. little chunks of the inner lining build up and cause blockages in the fuel line, the motor was turning over so it has to be a fuel problem.
No it doesn't 'have to be a fuel problem'. Could just as easily be an electrics problem, and indeed they are usually the first suspect, being least reliable.
You should have a back up trolling motor with a good battery it will get a long was at least where if it died you could paddle the rest of the way. May add some weight but better safe than sorry

GOOD planning, safety in numbers, well equipped plus good attitude but crikey mate you left me hanging in the end. What was the motor's problem ?
Well I must say, both you and Timmy have much bigger boats these day! haha cheers
Don’t think it would have been the 98 fuel, that’s all I run on my 25 yammy. Never missed a beat the last 4 years. Prob just something very simple, all the best hope you work it out rod.
the bar you went out through is the bar i sunk my first tinny on HAHA, glad to see you got back safe though
haha, no good mate. She's not the deepest bar on the coast thats for sure :)
Nah she isn’t was my first time try to head out through the bar haha
Devo Rod , looked so nice heading out , at least you’re safe big fella!
Nice collaboration video RodKITKIT with Timmy Turtle my two Favourite Fisherman’s Cheers William !! It’s sad that your engine is having some trouble maybe I can buy you a new engine and soon I will be helping you out by buying your Merch !! Can’t wait till the next video !!
yeah i feel ya after building my tinnie few yrs ago now and resto low hrs family motor 15hp mariner sitting for 18 yrs schmick and building the trailer even a 1 yr effort after 2 goes motor stolen so down i hunted any dodgy spray painted engine and took photos and crime searched the bastard no luck bought a rough old rebuilt johnson all i could afford it used so much fuel and smokey i ran out and had to paddle 3k at night back no fish either. Felt cursed sold cheap that motor and now finally a new one watching you timmy and Andy the best dudes is the way to regain that dream basic inspiration just to get bread and butter catch for dinner cheers guys
Sounded like a kill switch problem to me, zero spark after a long bumpy journey.. Hope im wrong mate cos it would kill me to get home after all that to realize that jiggling the switch a little could have fixed it! Glad you got back safe anyway mate, u live and learn =)
Hey got a tip check the direction of the gas line and make sure it is pumping gas into the motor and not out I had that happen to me and I couldn’t get my motor started then I switched it and it started like 2nd pull
I have watched 4 videos and I like this content so I subscribed
“Before anyone says anything I’m not completely stupid”. Quote of the day!! 👍
regardless...always remember...a bad day at fishing is better than a good day at working...I heard that somewhere before and I believe it rings true
Cheers Pat, yep still had some fun even if it was all a bit of a fail.
Glad you made it back. But hopefully the last we'll hear from that noisy and crap jet ski :)
Haha, I cant bag out the Jetskis anymore :)
Glad you made it in safe!
RoKKiT KiT ,
I see where you say it was just fouled plugs.
98 is a bugger on small 2stroke engines, very common to fouling plugs
My mechankc told us the complete opposite. Mkre crap un unleaded same as any engine it gunks it up. Premium cleans the motor and burns a lot cleaner . Id have to vlean the plug every start. Now with 98 its been sitting 3 months second pull it will fire and run like a dream and its a 20 odd year old donk. I can bet money on it.
Glad you got home safe
Here is a tip,,, one time i was snowmobiling and bumped the emergency toggle- stalled i didn't know why -- it didn't fall off, but was dislodged a bit. always pull that off and put it back on.
Yep I did a check and reconnect of the kill cord but no luck. In the end I’ve narrowed it down to a fuel line connection issue. Took forever to diagnose as it was so intermittent 👍
Bad luck mate, good to see so many peeps helping out.
Does Clive do any youtube? I'd like to see his setup for going off shore etc.
I think clive does a few vids but they are on Vimeo to avoid music issues... also on facebook
That thing would be so fun to try on a lake where there’s hardly no wind
Your videos are awesome! I have taken small craft offshore in very selective conditions. Maybe install a water separator?!
@@rokkitkit Awesome Bro. Good that it was a simple fix.
See Rokkit, that's what you get for not just paddling out there in the yak! 😂 Great Vid
be one hell of a paddle thats for sure
The factory fuel lines that come on mercury and Tohatsu's have an inner lining that wears away after time. little chunks of the inner lining build up and cause blockages in the fuel line, the motor was turning over so it has to be a fuel problem.
No it doesn't 'have to be a fuel problem'. Could just as easily be an electrics problem, and indeed they are usually the first suspect, being least reliable.
You are so nice, I hope you have MANY Great Fishing, Camping, Fun days :)
I think it’s tied to hair length the longer your hair gets the worse your luck gets Rod , time for short back and sides ?? 🤪👍🏻👍🏻
Short back and sides not long front is the reverse mullet 😂
im just enjoying this long hair before it all turns grey 😂
@@rokkitkit lucky it turns grey. Mine fell out
How big is that skiff? And If you don’t mind me asking about what price range is it for one. Thanks and keep up good work.
Its 4.30m long, you can check them out at Australian Kayak Specialists 👍
Was it a dodgy sparkplug? What happened?
Are you really allowed to sail so far out the coast with that thing?
Ahh bad luck mate still a great vid. Looking forward to more
You should have a back up trolling motor with a good battery it will get a long was at least where if it died you could paddle the rest of the way. May add some weight but better safe than sorry
What ended up being the problem? I’m curious and don’t see it anywhere in the comments
Clive, you are a legend!
agreed!
had a similar thing happen with 98 octane and a tohatsu . they're great motors but are simple by design. how did the plugs look ?
plugs look wet / glazed. I gave them a clean up and it started up no problems. Hopefully thats it.
