Every loss would be critical as you don't have the manufacturing base like you did in the 2nd world war. China now has the ability to keep the US fleets at arms length rendering it ineffective in many scenarios. Even if, and that's a big if , one takes into account possible less advanced tech that China uses, they would drown you out with numbers of missiles that would see your carriers vulnerable while wave after wave of Chinese fighters keeps your fighters busy . It's inevitable that your losses would be great.

Queen Elizabeth class carriers It's more like 700 minimum personal. Up to 1600 when the jet's start coming aboard. Hopefully it will be more than the 74 F-35B Lighting jets ordered. I was a Helmsman on the USS Kitty hawk CV-63 in 1987 and pulled off a perfect high speed 180* turn to recover some inbound jets. The list was incredible as I was not given an order on rudder degree angle so i choose my own. I wanted to see what she could handle. I asked permission to increase the Lee helm speed starboard side to to forward full from F1/3 as we were turning left and brought it back to 1/3 about 3/4 into the turn. The ship vibrated so bad but I didn’t let up as I was coming to course on my gyro compass I then countered my rudders and then centered on perfect course in under 2 minutes is my guess. The Captain called the bridge and then the Officer of the deck came to me and said… Boats that was one hell of a turn… but we ain’t in no hurry. The things you never forget!

Rockets are evolving into radar eluding ship killers. Therefore it would be better to have small ships, which would be deployed in swarms, instead of a big expensive single target.
