right, like an Olympics type of event done over several weeks. of course jpow would be left out in the current situation unless you come up with a way to do it covid isolation style, where you come up with challenges that each person can do alone wherever they are. the question is, do you keep each presenter on the bike of their discipline, do you take them out of their element and give them challenges on each kind of bike. personally I like the second option, especially since I know some of the presenters don't limit themselves to one discipline
I'm not sure that the "challenge" proved anything we didn't know already. The best part was Richard and Hank sharing a beer in the stream - you can have fun cycling on pretty much anything.
Still remember the guy who said the best bike is the one you ride all the time. Would have been interested to see how a lightweight XC bike would have fared as well, as I don't think there is massive difference between some of them and the gravel.

It's jolly good to know that the gravel bike is faster on a short stretch of tarmac, but what I'm really interested in is whether the advantage is sustained or increased over a longer riding distance of 20-40 miles - and whether a XC bike is able to keep up. I "think" I know the answer, but it would be nice to see it for real!

After riding mtn on gravel and road trails for years, the change to a gravel bike has been phenomenal. I easily get an extra 5 mph in speed just due to the gearing (and a little more aero). I am too much of a chicken to take steep downhill stuff anyway.
no one cares about how fast you do a route. it’s about having a good all rounder that can tackle everything instead of compromising the route because the bike isn’t capable and all you care about is strava times

I've owned mountain bikes since childhood, but as soon as I started cycling more seriously last year the deficiencies on smooth surfaces (slow) and long rides (numb hands/wrists) became all too apparent. At the same time, I didn't want to give up disc brakes, stable handling and ride comfort on the many (often rough) gravel roads where I live. A gravel bike was the ideal solution - and even better, a second set of wheels with some narrower road-oriented tires essentially gives me 2 bikes in 1 (gravel and road). I've never uploaded to Strava, but it's impossible to deny the satisfaction that comes from going significantly faster for the same effort. If I want to go offroad, I still have an older hardtail - but for everything else the gravel bike is simply better.
Significantly faster means you win about 10 minutes for one hour ride on a good surface. It means nothing if you aren’t going in a competition with time measurement. The faster you go with poor control drop bars the less safe is your trip. While on a hardtail MTB is safer and more stable, also more comfortable because front suspension and thicker tires. Also MTB slightly more upright position allows you to observe and enjoy surroundings more.

the only thing that I can focus on in this video is how loose and swingy those seatbags are! it is such a better ride if you tighten them up so that they don't swing!
This video takes me back to a rainy summer bikepacking loop I took my partner on this summer; think Steamboat CO's "Gravel Gruel" plus the "Wyoming Trail". I think y'all nailed it with the gear ratio and handling disparities, but looking at storage choices (and weight distribution), rider gear to accommodate terrain outliers, and how taking in an epic view with a nip of whiskey or bit of legal herbs also makes the differences between his gravel bike and my hardtail somewhat irrelevant. Except for maybe his multiple flats, and how he ate all my snacks.

This is a really interesting question and although I loved the video (really entertaining, fun and probably what you were aiming for to keep your audience happy) it did nothing to answer the question really. What about a decent 100mm travel hardtail with relatively skinny tyres vs. a gravel bike? As someone who does a lot of bikepacking on a hardtail I'm one of a large number of riders in a substantial market segment ready to be converted to a Gravel Bike...but, only if someone can answer the question, which is really better over a sensible selection of real bikepacking terrain...Gravel Bike or MTB...'nother film anyone?
For me the best bike is the one you are most comfortable on. For me its the mountain bike, I prefer the upright position and cushioned ride and am happy to take a slight speed penalty, plus on adventure riding you never know when a road can turn particularly "knarly" so the mountain bike has you covered.

Just saw Rab Wardell's record attempt for the West Highland Way done on a Santa Cruz Blur MTB, would make a great epic ride video to see if that route can be done on a gravel bike.
I recently moved to Los Gatos Calif. with lots of access to beautiful mountain trails and purchased a new Specialized gravel bike and sold my roadbike (1996 Lemond) because I didn't want 2 bikes. You can climb (almost as well ) but the beauty is you can also ride on the road very fast. I do 30-40km rides several times a week and it's just perfect. I'm always passing mountain bikes on my way to the trails! Best lightest tech wins!
well, the best adventure bike for me, is my cross country mountain bike. It's not quite as fast as the gravelbike, but it's comfortable through anything I dare to ride with camping gear and the 1X setup I have on it, is fast enough for my desired pace. I do, however, enjoy a fast paced adventure on my gravelbike from time to time
It's an uphill course: A gain of 186 m over 7.9 km, or about 2.4% (not including undulations). Managing 20 km/h would be about the same as 32 km/h with no elevation gain.

@@tmhrtly well done, yes it just means something going at a high speed, or high rate of knots per hour. A knot is a nautical mile, a weird old unit roughly 15% longer than a standard mile.
Why didn't rich lock his front suspension in round 1? And why a full suspension a hardtail would have been sufficient. Conclusion - Gravel bike can't take place of a MTB
GREAT video. One of the most entertaining in a while. For what I do out here on the Eastern plains of CO, gravel bike gets the nod. If I were to go where there are no roads or a descent trail, MTB would be the way to go. Agree with the analysis at the end of the video. Fair play Hank taking a dip as well.

Hybrid bike master race here. Hardtail low weight mtb with medium size semislick tires. 3x9 with 11-40 cassette. Best of both worlds, I get speed when I want to and I can climb when I need to.
So I've watched every comparison video on GCN and GMBN, and the conclusion thus far is that the XC bike from yesteryear is the best overall. Gravel bikes are less good climbing and going downhill, and modern XC bikes lost the ability to go fast on level surfaces. An older 29 inch hardtail XC bike with 2 or 3 front sprockets and a decent lockable front suspention is the real middle ground here. Correct me if I'm wrong, but if you could only have 1 bike that does it all decently well, the older gen XC bike would be it.

My bike would have won this challenge. Seriously. And the fun thing is that my bike is a ‘94 mtb converted to a gravel-ish all-purpose bike. It’s 26” wheels are agile in rough terrain, the 1.95” wide gravel tires roll very light but give more grip then the 40mm tires of the Grail. The flared drop bar allows me to do the UCI forbidden aero tuck, when I grip the top of the hoods, but also offers control and leverage in the wide drops. These two modern bikes are no match for my cobbled together ride 😎
I have been on an xc hardtail, 26er-29er since my early years up to now and did everything with it even racing on the road. I recently purchased gravel bike and i have to say it was more fun than the xc with the trails I have here in Essex (noting I still have to ride a few paved road before hitting trails). If a technical mountain is just on my door front, no brainer It will be an mtb then.

Sand is an issue on MTB too, unless you run knobby tires. I like to run fast rolling tyres on my hardtail and mostly walk on sand.

Been road biking for about two years now. Just got my first mtb. So far I don’t understand how I’ve lived this long without a mtb.

@@tmhrtly well done, yes it just means something going at a high speed, or high rate of knots per hour. A knot is a nautical mile, a weird old unit roughly 15% longer than a standard mile.

GREAT video. One of the most entertaining in a while. For what I do out here on the Eastern plains of CO, gravel bike gets the nod. If I were to go where there are no roads or a descent trail, MTB would be the way to go. Agree with the analysis at the end of the video. Fair play Hank taking a dip as well.

Hybrid bike master race here. Hardtail low weight mtb with medium size semislick tires. 3x9 with 11-40 cassette. Best of both worlds, I get speed when I want to and I can climb when I need to.
So I've watched every comparison video on GCN and GMBN, and the conclusion thus far is that the XC bike from yesteryear is the best overall. Gravel bikes are less good climbing and going downhill, and modern XC bikes lost the ability to go fast on level surfaces. An older 29 inch hardtail XC bike with 2 or 3 front sprockets and a decent lockable front suspention is the real middle ground here. Correct me if I'm wrong, but if you could only have 1 bike that does it all decently well, the older gen XC bike would be it.

And the fun thing is that my bike is a ‘94 mtb converted to a gravel-ish all-purpose bike.
It’s 26” wheels are agile in rough terrain, the 1.95” wide gravel tires roll very light but give more grip then the 40mm tires of the Grail. The flared drop bar allows me to do the UCI forbidden aero tuck, when I grip the top of the hoods, but also offers control and leverage in the wide drops. These two modern bikes are no match for my cobbled together ride 😎

I have been on an xc hardtail, 26er-29er since my early years up to now and did everything with it even racing on the road. I recently purchased gravel bike and i have to say it was more fun than the xc with the trails I have here in Essex (noting I still have to ride a few paved road before hitting trails). If a technical mountain is just on my door front, no brainer It will be an mtb then.
