- With an average lifespan of around 8 to 10 years, this is a fish that will stand the test of time given the right care and conditions. They can even live longer if you take good care of them.
Convict cichlids have around 9 vertical stripes of black against a lighter-colored tone and that is what makes them look like convicts. The color intensity of the fish varies and you can find many of them with a pinkish hue.
In the wild, this fish is mostly found in the larger rivers and streams where they shelter themselves near rocks and sunken branches.
They are particularly popular among cichlids because they are a low-maintenance fish that can last a long time. They are also excellent when it comes to breeding because of their receptiveness to mates.

Keyword : community tank. With how popular they are, there really isn't much information on them. With so much misinformation out there when it comes to fishkeeping, I tend to like to experiment. My husband had a convict group (to which he ended up hating) and they bred like crazy and even became aggressive toward each other after they paired up. He had 8 in a 55 which was plenty of space for them. Great water conditions. He ended up giving them away but not before allowing me to pick one of the babies. I have had my SINGLE convict now for over a year and I love her to pieces. She is absolutely wonderful.
She loves to "dig" and "rearrange" the pebbles around her claimed territory and I've really built a bond/connection with her. She gets excited to see me and it's just a really cute experience.
Anyway, she's in a 20 tall with a small school of Tiger Barbs and there has never been an issue. I know she isn't stressed or depressed by her behavior and coloration. The only time her coloration got dark was when I was out of town and not the one caring for her. As soon as I came back home, she began eating again and her coloration went back to normal. (She's very light with flickers of pastel in her fins and on her belly)
I would never house my convict with any other cichlids. They would stress her and there would be a constant competition either for breeding or food.
My challenge is this : Let's normalize keeping cichlids by themselves to claim their own territory. I'm sure a lot of them can be housed similar to mine where she is alone, calm, happy, and living with a schooling fish. I think that makes for a much more serene tank, aesthetically, as well.
Happy Fish Keeping!
We are always, always learning new things.
Couldn't agree more. I've only tried this with Firemouth Cichlids, which are generally more peaceful than Convicts. Even larger male Firemouths I've kept would ignore any small schooling fish, but they were pushy during feeding time when kept with greedy eaters like Barbs or Rainbowfish.
Subscribed just because of the channel name lol. 2nd video in, I love the style of your videos. Great content
Thank you so much!!
Can they live without an airpump?
Great video Chris (especially the start LOL) i really enjoyed this- Convicts are so under rated
Agreed!
Can you put 3 fish in a 40 gallon breeder
Yes, they will more than like end up breeding and you will need to remove one of them eventually.
One feet tank contains how many litres water ? 💧
I have 2 convicts in with 6 Tetras, 2 swordtails, and 2 Firebelly Cichlids. They've been fine hanging out with everybody. The aggressors in this unique case is one particular swordtail 😬
By now the convicts or firemouth ate the swordtail and tetras lol
@@mmh5481 the Convicts had fry and I gave them all away because I didn't want that to happen again lol the 2 Firemouths are in a 72 gallon cichlid tank. The swordtails I gave away along with all the tetras. About 5 months ago I got into brackish water so I set up a 100 gal with Archerfish, Mono Sebae's, Mono Argentus', Figure 8's, Green Spotted Puffers, Ruby Scats and Silver Scats.
Often overlooked tankmates are the native sunfish, colorful in their own right, and perfect for a convict tankmate, not only in size but temperament.
I have had a female convict for a while now and I know that cause she was a total biatch when she had about 100 babies I took and septated her and the babies soon as I could and gave away mate so my question is now I have a school of electric yellow labs and electric blue acara I also have a Bala and some cats .and briselnose pleco.should I take her out or let her be .I'm watching her and she's been pretty good to the tank mates .I'm just worried I have a 55
Hi I was wondering what a good number would be for an all male 55 gallon convict tank
3 max imo
Get an all female they’re prettier.
My mom had a breeding pair of Convicts and they were in a 100 gallon Community tank and they did just fine in it
Hey we’re those electric blue acara I’m considering convicts to add to my acara tank
Convict become nippy and acara are the best suited with firemouth Parrot and silver dollar.. I'd prefer convict and jewel cichlid to be kept with African cichlids
I had eb acaras w convict cichlids. They did ok. The cons actively intimidated them, same as eachother, but the acaras are chiller.
It helps to have lots of caves and live plants. The look of them together is striking. I've heard they can cross breed. havent seen it but it'd be cool
Edit: cons might kill anything smaller than them, community fish
Excellent report! Thanks
If I have one convict alone, in a 10 gallon is that ok? I have live plants in there and it's super cute how she loves to re-arrange them. But I wonder if she would need company..
She would be happier alone. Especially in a 10 gallon.
@@MultiTankAddiction got it! Thank you so much!
: )
Prob upgrade to a 20 gallon
Is the fish still alive? If its a male that tank is definitely way too small by now
If it's a pair she'd like a amale
Great video. I love convicts and think they are very underrated. Got a sub from me!
Like 368! How are you my friend? Love convict cichlids! I have one! Was wondering if I can put a convict with a rainbow shark? Hope you and the family had a very happy New year 🎊! Take care and God bless! Animal Papa! 😎🐠🎊🙏
If you only have 1 convict it could be possible, rainbow sharks are not overly aggressive compared to convicts so keep that in mind if you decide to try.
Ok thank you for your advice! Hope all is well with you! Take care, happy fish 🐠 keeping and God bless! Animal Papa! 😎🐠🙏
So if I only get 1 Convict Cichlid will it be more peaceful and ok with other fish?
I have one Convict with 2 Sunfish/Bluegills and a leopard pleco. He chases them all day long 🤦🏾♂️.
Itd depend on what the other fish are. If youre just going for 1 Id recommend going with a female convict. Ive tried just keeping a male in a tank with a whole bunch of different cichlids over the years. Every time the male becomes extremely territorial and kills everyone else. Even fish twice his size. Weirdly enough the only time Ive had no issues is when I tossed a male into a community tank full of tetras and peaceful fish. Seems like the second a fish is aggressive towards the cons Ive kept they just lose it and kill everything. If the fish leave them alone theyre pretty chill.
Hi Chris, just wanna ask, is it feasible for convicts and electric blue acaras to cohabilitate????
Yes, although, the acara will be out numbered in no time, when it comes to the breeding habits of the convict.
@@MultiTankAddiction can you keep a single of each species? I have a single EBA right now.
Yes the easy going temperament of the EBA will work fine with a single convict
@@AKINAacacia that convict killed that EB didnt he?
these fish are sure a hand full to keep. Nice share brotha
Yes they are
Cuban cichlid with convict cichlid?
I didn’t mean it to be but to save some mollies and guppies from being flushed I put the in with y three convicts ad they get along fine now I have more convicts and mollies.
Great video Chris, I have a Carpo knife in with my 11 convicts. I also had jewel cichlids with mine. My neighbour decided to to donate his unwanted cichlids 2 years ago.
I remember I cross bred a Convict and a Texas Cichlid, they were beautiful hybrids.
How do you get that to happen?
@@graphixdb2009 They will cross breed in the same tank, it’s a fairly common hybridization.
Hello nice video and love that channel new subscriber here❤️😊🇮🇳👍
Thank you so much!! I think it might be time for an updated version of this video..
My convicts get along great with my molly fish and plattys and endless.
I think I just had a male convict pair off with a jewel cichlid!?!?! They are protecting a cave together!! Lol 😂
How wierd they are not even remotely related, but then again i have had an oscar pair with a jack dempsey.. so you never know.
Hi Chris !!!!!! I enjoyed this vidoe!!!!
So glad!
One of my favorite fish Chris!
Interesting never heard of the Honduran red point
My jewels are kept at 80-81 degrees lol. Never had a problem
Also the Jack Dempsey and the fire mouth
They’re also called convicts because they have black and white stripes which are associated with jail, crime, jail bars, etc
No way 🙄
What about my betta
No...
@@MultiTankAddiction didnt think so just couldnt find anything on it, thanks
Way to aggressive they would kill your betta, plus the betta is too slow, and different water requirements.
ty
My black belt gets along with my convict chiclids
I have over 100 Convict in a 300 gallon tank and i have two red tail catfish for Population control man convict really grow on you
My male thinks he’s a silver dollar and schools in a pack of four(5 with him)
Is your car for sale sir ?
Hello my new friend thanks for subscribing to my channel welcome to my family of subscribers I did hit the bell to know you post a new video
Turtles are one aswell
Dang that girl at the beginning is cute!!
Ur really weird
Well put together video Chris. I’ve sent you a message on instagram
I will check it out
Scientific names would help when you are targeting an international audience. Throughout the world local names differ.
apart from that I do not like mixing African and South American fish.
They are always breeding and will whoop most other fish.
I'm sure the information you sharing is fantastic, but the Ferris Wheel style music in the background is annoying-- and I'm unable comprehend what it is you're saying because it.
The fiesta/party music is why I like this video. Combined with Chris’ voice it’s funny and informative at the same time
Breed worse than Cockroaches.
