    Sampling can be tricky in terms of artistic integrity, and I have a lot of thoughts about it. We'll get into some fun Octatrack beat making stuff here too, all framed in the context of how I feel about using different types of samples in my own music. Features samples from ‪@BATHSmusic‬ Splice sample pack.

    Your opening discussion reminds me of this thing my old piano teacher always liked to say: "Amateurs borrow, geniuses steal." It's nice hearing the topic discussed from a creative viewpoint as opposed to a legal viewpoint.
    Also, fantastic jam, and congrats on the move!

      Thanks Josh! I totally agree with your piano teacher. People’s favorite art tends to remind them of something else, & it’s a nice way to suggest inspiration while writing.

    I adore that bass line. I may have to steal it and chop it up.
    And I couldn’t agree more! Musical tropes are tropes for a reason. The Axis chords sound fantastic even though everyone uses them.
    And with the electronic music not being “real music” I think most electronic musicians who come from a guitar background used to think like that. I love it when people open their minds and try something else.
    It’ll be cool to see your new studio come together!

      I spent so much time trying to “humanize” the bass line but I’m so happy with how it came out, glad you enjoyed it as well!
      I’m excited to set it up as well, I’m in a bigger place now with more places to hang things, so I’m gonna have to get some new art and such!

    I liked your dialogue in this video. These are questions I ask myself on a daily basis.
    If you are using royalty free samples or paid sample packs, free to do what you want. If you’re sample flipping licensed content without a license, must completely change the theme, timbre, pitch, etc just to use that sound.
    I enjoy working with samples, but I prefer synthesizing my own sounds for the peace of mind that I have made everything myself.
    Synth preset tweaking is the same concept as tweaking a drum loop. No reason not to, but I enjoy the exploration process of creating patches and drum sounds more than scrolling samples and figuring out a way to use someone else content in a new way. Not hating on it, I think it’s incredibly innovative and fun flipping samples, especially vocal ones on the octatrack with the slice grid and an lfo controlling slices.

    Very inspiring video!! It makes me want to take my Octa out of the dust and work with it again. I totally think the same about sampling like you. I find the most fun and rewarding if I flip the sample in a way where the original structure is merely recognizable. But often I also just loop a specific part because it fits perfectly in the track, and I do sometimes think I should of spent more effort in it.

      Thanks for watching! Since I made this video, the ease of sample destruction remains my favorite thing about the OT. I feel like I really never know where I’m gonna end up until I get there.

    A really interesting topic to discuss I think and there's a lot of nuance within that I couldn't begin to cover here. Areas that might be interesting to follow-up might be the steps required to take the pattern you were developing and work out the what it takes for you to feel full artistic ownership over - does it become 'yours' after resampling the entire beat, pitching it down, changing tempo, running through your own fx, slicing...etc? Might be interesting to find out if/when that shift occurs! While rambling, it's interesting how prevalent/almost expected something like the amen break sample is to certain genres of dance music - one sample, instantly recognisable.

    • @SlowHaste
      @SlowHaste  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, that’s definitely something to think about further! And yeah, you’re totally right - people are almost disappointed if they listen to a certain genre and the trope they’re hoping to hear *isn’t* present.

    Sculpting with sound is in my opinion is an art form on his own……
    Creating music with your own sculptures in combination with your own flavour and played on your instruments of choice can result in something new and unique.
    Sampler’s are instruments and just like any other instrument you must learn to play them.
    And learn your basic music theorie this is imo very important…….be creative, make failures record, delete, listen and write down what your doing…..
    If u want to make 9-5 music well then buy some expensive gear and get some midi packs and instance beatmakers and call your self an artist and impress your family with it…….
    My two cents…
    Lovely greetings from Germany……

    I REALLY like this jam! That melody sounded weird that first couple of times but now it's stuck in my head. I think you hit the nail on the head when talking about the drums - if a sample or loop or whatever works best in the song as it is then keep it as it is. Also, didn't realise Baths had a sample pack,off to check that out now!

    • @SlowHaste
      @SlowHaste  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you!! Yeah, making that melody was absolutely the most fun part. There are a lot of cool vocal runs in the pack, I feel like you use a lot of chopped vocals in your stuff so I’m sure you’ll really enjoy it!

      Yes!! I'm VERY bad at visual art (I know it's subjective, but I just don't have the brain for it haha), and collage is one form I've always enjoyed a lot, because of its abstract nature.

    Nice video! I actually follow a lot of you tubers who sample (from real artists) and I do enjoy what they do. That said, having been in a band that produced original music I know I’d be very upset if someone just chopped up anything we made and profited from it without our consent. There are so many ways to buy royalty free loops and samples that provide equal inspiration and the creator of that content is consenting to it’s use. You also then never have to worry about a lawsuit:)

    • @SlowHaste
      @SlowHaste  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks! I think one of the best parts about it is how versatile samples can be in terms of how they're used. You could give two people the same exact thing, and they'd create two totally different songs.

    • @dracul74
      @dracul74 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@SlowHaste agreed. One thing I sometimes do is to sample a real album, pitch it and then record against that sample and then remove that sample from the finished groove. It’s a good inspiration trick when the creative juices aren’t flowing :)

      @@SlowHaste I really love making music mashups and collage, but it stays offline now. A big part of my interest in synthesis and composition just arises from the practical need to provide my own soundtracks to videos I make without being demonetized/DMCA'd on youtube.
