We Had to Leave Kuala Lumpur to Try This Dish

  • We had to leave Kuala Lumpur city to try this dish... a local man invited us to his town called Klang, the former capital of the state of Selangor in Malaysia, just an hour outside of Kuala Lumpur to try the famous dish that originated here called Bah Kut Teh, meaning 'pork ribs tea' which is a type of stew served wet or dry. This dish was introduced to Malaysia by Chinese immigrants who worked in the dock yards in around the 1930's, but now it is becoming a popular dish in Malaysia. Still, the best place to try Bah Kut Teh is in it's hometown, Klang.

Olivia you got it right !! Using the spoon as the main utensil to eat - more efficient and you can scoop the gravy as well, which you can't using the fork. Gravy is very important in Malaysian dish (Malay, Chinese, Indian or other Malaysians').
The culture of heavy breakfast originated from our ancestors who used to be labour workers (paddy & veggie farmers, rubber estates workers or fishermen etc) prior to the 50-60s. They need the calories.

Bak Kut Teh is another of those dishes that taste differently for each restaurant (cause each of them have different recipes). I would say it really depends on personal preferences. And personally, I think it is acquired taste. So while local may praise it to heaven, foreigners will often find it not as good as the local claims to be. But yes, the best BKT I ever had is in Klang.

I'm from Klang and I recently tried BKT in other places like Kepong... nothing matches the OG. If you are in Klang, I'd suggest these places:
-behind Klang Parade there's a row of BKT shops
-BKT under the bridge aka Restauran Seng Huat (some say if you don't try this place, you cannot consider yourself a Klang person)
Thank you uncle Jimmy for bringing this couple!

Guys, you must try Curry Laksa…my all time favourite laksa…It is one of Malaysia’s best dishes…It is not the same like the common indian curry that you know…it is Malay, Chinese and Indian influence in one bowl…It’s noodle in chicken and shrimp broth that is cooked with coconut milk…You can choose the yellow egg noodle or the vermicelli rice noodle or mixed…The one i love best used to be in a food court in an old mall called Ampang Park, but the mall is no longer there…so the closest taste to it that I have eaten so far ( am very picky about food), is at the food court in Lot 10 mall in Bukit Bintang area…Eat it with the separate sambal they give you for a xtra spicy kick…enjoy!

If you want to eat the best BKT soup version , go to Kepong . BKT is a very special dish and extremely rich in flavor due to the herbs . Each BKT stall, the soup is different due to the type of herbs used for the soup . Also the type of meat part to order will certainly change the eating experience .

Glad you took the trip to Klang for the BKT. Uncle Jimmy did bring you to a quiet and appropriate BKT shop where you can vlog in peace. If you go to any one of the top 10 popular BKT shops, it will be crowded and noisy and you probably need to queue for a seat.
Maybe for hygiene reasons, your rice plate was individually filled with meat, soup, chilli and everything in a big heap.
Locals eat BKT differently. We pick a piece of meat + tofu skin or whatever. Then add chilli and minced garlic and eat with spoonfuls of rice. Then we wash it down by downing spoonfuls of the BKT broth on its own. And the process is repeated till done. We usually ask for multiple refills of the BKT broth.
So you both have tasted BKT. Many have not!
