@rreith I partially agree with what you are saying. In the video we are not really "going after" each other with our attacks because the purpose of the video was simply to show and demonstrate a training drill for beginner students. Therefore, it looks like one or the other of us could be hit if the punch was more powerful. Obviously in a more intense training session each of us would attack stronger, and consequently we would both be required to be much more effective with our blocks.

If my Shotokan Karate Sensei would see this he would mostly say:
"Lift you hands higher and punch his face if he doesnt block right!"

Nice, I just miss the mae geri part. Never know how to block it properly (I know it's with a gedan barai, but I get confused with the sides).

Everyone is a critic... but forgetting this video is just meant to show how to do this. You won't be a black belt trying to imitate this, you'll be a much lower grade just trying to get the shape of the exercise, then going to lesson to learn the technique.
I mean, my white belt six-year-old daughter watched this to help understand it, do you think she's thinking about how high their blocks are or whether their hikite is of standard?
Really helpful video again, thank you

So, well done for trying to share karate Paul, but you have missed the point of gohon kumite... which is distance, timing, correct technique... and pressure! The positives are that your back foot is in a good position...nicely anchored with toes facing the enemy. When you move backwards, your heel rarely lifts which is excellent and shows good weight distribution for your front stance. You also have a nice upright posture... no bum sticking backwards or head ducking forward. There are many things that need development though (the joy of karate!) and so as an instructional video, needed to be corrected before the final cut was aired:
    - At the start, bow out of distance, but then move into distance. The starting distance is wrong and puts the defender under no pressure. There is never any danger of being hit should the defender not block, because you don't stand still - you move backwards. - Similarly, the distance is wrong throughout the stepping. The first attacking step should be inside your stance, the next outside, and then inside etc...
    - Your student (Andrew) moves his front foot backwards(!) each time he steps. This means (1) his energy is not going forward (2) he is telegraphing an attack to the defender and (3) he is breaking the mai (distance). For backwards stepping, Andrew lifts his back heel nearly every time.- The age uke rising blocking arm is blocking the attackers wrist, but is too far away from the skeleton frame. This is because the distance is wrong. Make that age uke stance and get someone to pull your arm forward - you will lose balance. Now try to drop your shoulder and (keeping your fist further forward than your elbow) have your forearm one fist from your head...stronger when pulled - yes?
    - Ditto for soto uke outside block. The elbow should be one fist from your torso. try the same balance test as above. Also, the students fist is way too high above his shoulder, which means the chudan punch will not be blocked if punched correctly.
    - Your gedan barai is just that - gedan to block a kick. Check how high your fist is above your knee...again should be one fist away else a chudan kick will travel through your block. I used to make this error until I got kicked in the stomach under my block by someone who actually kicked on target, rather than them being scared of a bruised shin!
    - Check your age uke block. Starting position is correct, but then you drop your hikite hand below your hip before lifting it again... which is (1) the wrong direction (2) waste of energy and (3) slow as not straighest line to target.
    - Although there is evidence of hamne and shomen hip changes, you would benefit from a much bigger hamne movement in your block, to augment your blocking arm and to be as compressed as possible to deliver your counter punch. Try bending your back leg a little further and twist your back thigh more.
    - Andrew does not land oizuki stepping punch correctly, especially the final punch when he (commonly) over-reaches and lands hamne, rather than shomen. Push against his hand and he will be weak. Engage the hip forward and he won't move.
    - Lastly, you are leading the attacker when you do it without count. You are moving first to block, rather than waiting for Andrew to attack. Timing.... which is a crucial lesson this kumite is teaching!
Kumite is a fight. It is not making shapes. In true Budo karate, your life depends on the correct block, and delivering one decisive blow. Do you want to be in hospital... or do you want to put the other guy down and walk away intact?
In my opinion, the two hardest 'areas' of Shotokan karate are Heian Shodan kata (because there's nowhere to hide in advanced movements) and Sanbon and Gohon kumite (because the 'soul' of your karate is on display).
Do I get these two 'areas' right each and every time... with each and every opponent? No...which is why I will never stop practicing. By posting an instructional video though, I do feel you have a responsibility to engage and cover the real reasons for kihon kumite. Might I suggest you break it right down, into the the important themes I have covered above, pointing your viewers (students) in the right direction? My very best wishes in your endeavours to develop in our shared art.

If your opponent knows that after a certain number of steps you would punch back, then its all just a joke.

It's *for practice* dumbass. Did you even hear what he said? If you apply kumite in real life, no one can "predict" what's coming next.

just a brief comment. The distance between the partners in your video is far too long. Make it shorter and Gohon and sambon kumite also train the participants nerve and the ability to deal with the fear of confrontation (all be it rather formally).
