    Well you know what they say about assumptions… Turns out this isn’t quite the lock I’d believed it was.

    We stopped selling Squire combination padlocks when we had the shop, as they were always failing for no reason!
    They used to be a good brand back in the day, when the locks were made in Willenhall, but it soon noticed when they started getting them made in China!
    I have a squire 37 stronglock range on my garden shed, since 1980 and its still working lovely...i wouldn't expect the modern equivalent to last more than a couple of years now though!!

    • @LockNoob
      @LockNoob  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Interesting. I think they still make good locks though

      @@LockNoob They are ok, but you can tell the difference between the old ones and the current ones...eg nylon packers in the shackle on the 220,440 and 660..compared to the ones made in the UK when they also made the locks in brass (330,550 and 770)..they went on forever...literally

      I bought a job lot of FOUR of those clamshell 4-digit 40mm combo locks a while back. Just with a few blind code changes, and decodings, only ONE remained operational. Mainly due to that stupid swivel plate recoding mechanism at the top being too weak and the outer wheels being made of plastic that is far too soft. They very quickly lose their grip on the clutch/mesh with the stiff inner wheels and they fail utterly. Just JUNK. Oh, and it's not just Squire either. The four digit combo locks that ABUS seems to have sold to councils/parks etc are very weak physically. The mechanism is reliable, but they can be split open very easily with a flathead screwdriver and hammer. (Tools that wouldn't appear to be unusual for the public to carry).

    I work on the mobile telecoms sites and they often use combo locks for their compounds and the combos are given in the access details. I came across a five wheel version of this lock which is unusual as they normally use the Abus lock. No one knew the combo and reckoned someone with a spare lock in the van just used it and not told anyone the code, I was told to get in anyway i could so used this method and within 10 mins i was in.. the office didnt believe when I told them..lol thanks for the info..awesome😂

    Brilliant mate. Yes the smaller Squires like this can be decoded in that manner..... But the larger models do need to be decoded by forcing as much force on release button at bottom to decode. If I am wrong, I apologies but I had to decode a larger one a while back at work.

    • @LockNoob
      @LockNoob  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I think you are right. There are 2 different mechanisms

    Nice demo.
    My dear friend Sotonlock showed the same method a while back.
    On my channel I picked a range of Squire Mercury locks that were ridiculously ready to open. On Squires website they say that even Locksmiths struggle to open them 🤔💭Hmmmmm.
    Cheers Lock Noob, always a pleasure to watch your channel.

    Great video. I did a post about this a few years back on Instagram, The Wheel in the True Gate I thought rode a little higher than the others and as well as having more play it makes a distinctive rattle when tapped too.

    Very interesting, I love Squire locks, never would have thought you could open on that easily. I guess everything has it's flaws, and it's our jobs to find them :) Great video, and I'd love to find one of those that you can open that easily.

    A long known problem but kept mostly in the dark. This works on all the different sizes 4 or 5 wheel. New locks with the pull down mechanism work different but still easy to decode 😢

      How do the new ones decode? Are you talking about the newer squires which all numbers have the “bounce” so this method doesn’t work?

    Yep, that's how you do it! That method works on all the squire combo padlocks with that style of body, it actually works even better on the bigger 5-digit ones. Not so well on locks that have been worn in or used outside, but still.
    They ought to change it, you see these locks used in so many places that ought to have a bit more security.

    Update: I've just picked open my Squire Warrior 65. I originally thought it was going to be awkward, but it was in fact scarily easy too. All it took was a bottle opener I bought from Butlins to tension from the plunger at the bottom, and a small Allen key to turn the wheels under tension. All the gates click in place and you can feel them with the tensioner. Just like every other Squire combo, there are false gates directly opposite the true gates, but the false gates bind up easily and the true gates give a metallic positive click.

    Yeah, what a let-down. It works on the next size up 5 digit one too, but not on the biggest 5 digit one that I have. But I agree that quality isn't good since they're made in China these days. The plastic that the outer wheels are made of is too soft, so the reset tool squire provides deforms the holes and slips out. Very poor at the price point those are. It wouldn't have cost too much more for brass or stainless steel wheels.
