It's really good to see a 'real' plot. Some gardening channels have so much growing that I wonder where I'm going wrong! Thanks for sharing the downs as well as the ups! 😅
All the seeds that I sowed in February in the house germinated within a few days and really grew on well under lights, but later sowings have been very slow, or not germinated at all. I have come to the conclusion that the reason for the wonderful early start was that the house was lovely and warm, whereas now the heating is switched off and so things are a lot cooler. My peas and beans are a disaster - they just don’t want to grow. Hopefully a bit of sunshine will help.
Love a good garden update. Glad things have taken a positive turn!
The ups and downs of growing your own, it's fun isn't it? 👍😎🌻🌞
We've had some warmer nights, nearly ready to plant in the polytunnels.
I feel the pain, my seeds have been slow growing but strong… however there has been a LOT of munching as soon as they make it to the allotment. Pleased to have found your channel, subscribed 😊
As an ancient old crone of a gardener let me "assure " you 😂😅 that there will be many years ahead of times when gardening will frustrate you to the point of giving up. I have been known to throw the odd trowel ( not at anyone YET!)
Hang on in there ....there are many, many joys too.❤
😂❤😂❤ from another Ancient Crone, you are spot on Sister! So many frustrations. Gardens teach patience like no other! 😂❤
Going to garden every single morning is what makes me sane so I carry on even seeds are not growing yet... chill and wait for a bit
Isn't it just such a relief to have some warm sunshine and mild nights!
My carrots germinated well but then the slugs moved in. Time to re-sow.
I really enjoyed this update. It seems as though we went from late Winter to late Spring this year completely missing early to mid Spring out and you are so right that it is reassuring to compare results as it's been such a tough early start to the year for everyone it seems.
I do have a heater still on in the greenhouse but it only kicks in for frost protection. I only had to heat things up for about ten days this year so I'm fine with that although I do have a heatmat for the Chillis which is incredibly economical and won't be needed soon. Things are really starting to take off at last 😁 The tomato plants are growing well in the quadgrows and I just put the Cucumbers in their final pots today!
That shot of the fox cubs was absolutely brilliant!
That fox looks gorgeous and healthy!
Let's hope the warm weather continues as this has been frustrating to say the least!
I've read and also looking at gardening tv programs they saying our springs are going to be getting later and the warmer weather will be lasting longer. So because of this we need to be adapting our growing.
Hi jb yes all my plants are very small it’s the cold & wet weather! those cubs are so cute 🥰 lv Irene 😘 xx
Awww! Those foxes are so cute ❤🦊Hope the carrots work out for you this time! 🤞Haha self spoilage 😄Weather has been really weird and cold here in Sweden as well. I hope it starts warming up here as well. Some of my plants are already starting to show small roots in the holes at the bottom of their 2 liter pots that I potted them up to about 3 weeks ago. Don't have room for bigger pots inside, so hope they can go outside soon enough!
I am in Aberdeen Scotland & this has been the worst year for seed germination & I have been sowing my own seeds for a few years but the weather has started to eventually warm up a bit now 👍
Looking fab Jb. Its slower in Cornwall as well as temps been 6 over night and still loads of rain.
My toms have been slow too. I don't fall into the trap of starting them early now, but this weather makes you doubt your April sowing.
Hi jb you might find the re-sown peas catch up as air warming up now
Been glorious up here in the E mids JB, had to water my spud tubs twice! the forcast has been useless, they forcast rain 2 days in front for every day since friday, then changed it on the day we've not had a drop 😆
All looking good where you are, JB. Thank you for updating. Seems a lot of folk have been encouraged by your honest updates. Helps me evaluate more accurately where I’m at compared to others. It’s incredibly helpful for confidence boosting.
Something about the weather doesn’t add up. I have incredibly healthy and robust looking mammoth broccoli I transplanted late March, yet other types of brassicas transplanted 3 weeks later appear to have stalled.
Really keen to follow your compost comparisons. Thank you for taking the time to organise.
My peppers and chilies are far, far smaller than yours. Loads of leaves but stunted. Courgettes and cucumbers, tho’…. Nightmare. Under the same grow lights, warmth, watering etc but incredibly leggy! Sowed them 2 weeks ago. Took 4 days to germinate… the 5th day they popped up like gentle giants on stilts.
Absolutely adore your journey. And the comments attached to your vlogs.
Hope Jess is well
We have foxes visit but we never get them during the day I so disappointed. We use lambs wool for mulch quite a lot and they always dig at it and pull it up
Aww baby foxes are the best!!!
Our alderman usually get to 6’ and taller.
Definitely the weather… all picking up now 🎉
Great update, JB. Foxes so cute too. Thank you.
Glad things are looking up, have a good week!
I only grow a few varieties of chilli. My main is scotch bonnet. Love it 🥰 it is sown from seed in mid march & fruits fine here in se Northumberland I’ve not got any fancy lights or heat mats. I grow em in a west facing conservatory. We all have different conditions. Wishing you every success in your growing space 💕
Looking good JB! Obviously every thing rooting away now 🎉🎉🎉🎉
Oh this weather, so cold and wet no wonder the plants are getting growing. You are braver than I at putting out your chillis. Mine have got quite large now but I have had them outside during the day when I have been at home and it has been dry (that's just twice in the last couple of weeks 😕)
I was going evict them today but we have had such awful rain today I couldn't face the trip to the greenhouse at the end of my garden several time in the pouring rain. So they got a reprive. 😄
My broad beans have got rust already look not too great and are shorter than they should be but are flowering. Just hope there are bees around to pollinate them now. looking forward to the compost trial video already 😄
P.S. We have had solar panels on our roof for the last 12 years and my hubby has kept a record of the sunshine /energy used in a spreadsheet all that time 🤓🧐 He was saying today that April 2024 is our second worse for sun/energy production in those 12 years. 2019 was the worst if you were interested 😁 We are in Surrey so not quite the sunny south coast but it does feel like we haven't seen proper sun for months!
P.P.S. Those baby fox cubs OMG soo cute. We were hoping our fox pair at the end of next door's garden would have had a family by now they have been together since November. Still to see any babes yet on my wildlife camera
That is really really interesting to hear about the solar panels and the records! Makes so much sense
Hi JB, the fox looks very healthy & those cubs are so cute ❤ I still have beds with nothing in, just trying to find the time to plant them up. Your plot is looking good, the weather has affected a lot of the plants, I had greenfly on my climbing rose, a few weeks ago 🙄 I thought that's early. Nice video update. Thanks for sharing and take care 😊
Thanks Christine!
Yes, JB. Miserable weather. Lots of dreary days and rain without ONE SINGLE nitrogen fixing electrical storm.
I’m beginning to fall out with global warming taxes.
I’ve found watering to be the main issue of germination, namely too much so it rots the seeds
With compost you need to know its saturation point. Last year I believe I overwatered stuff my tried & trusted compost is amazing but I overwatered. User error 🤪. I knew the compost was fine 🤷♀️. It looked dry & it wasn’t.
For bean weevil JB hoe around your beans they don't like soil disturbance, when you hoe you might see them dash for cover, It's misty where I live in north east UK and it feels cold 6/6/24, everything looking good 👍... Steve Colwell
Oooh that's interesting thank you!
Foxes are a great reminder to hard boil one’s harvests to within an inch of their nutritional life’s purpose.
😆
Great vlog JB as per usual. Please can you ask Jesse what iPhone journal app she’s using, she mentioned on her channel last week! I have messaged her myself but No Answer! Hope you don’t mind me asking you. The cosmos just starting to flower in the green house, if you take
The top off you will get bushy growth and loads more flowers too once planted out side👌👏
The app is actually called “Journal” I had to use the search box to find it on my iPhone 😂 I’ve been using it this past week and love it! Good luck 😊
Im growing 4 tomatoe varieties. Honey Delight has fantastic growth, Crimson crush has good growth, Alice's Dream has good growth but the Black Moon started out quite we'll but definitely smaller plants but now lower leafs are curling then dying and they're not growing very much at all. Still growing indoors here in Central Scotland but hoping to put them out in the greenhouse soon.
Anyone had similar problems with Black Moon? Its just strange that theyre all growing in the same soil under the same conditions.
Not growing black moon but black truffle is way behind all the other varieties for me
Hi JB, were did you get your green set up for your seedling from to buy. Ive sown so many seeds lucky to get them going but as soon as they come up the slugs come an eat them. Ive look at some wooden ones but a bit out of my price range for now. My green house is a 6x4. Thanks
Link and discount in the description! They're from Copagrey and they're so great!
@@JBNat thank you so much checking now.
What type of netting do you use ?
For what purpose? The peas?
Cubs!!! ❤❤❤❤❤❤
Your chillies look like a monster against mine, they are still extremely tiny. I am contemplating whether to ditch them all and just buy some from the garden centres
Give them a few weeks in the sun and see what they do first before you scrap them! The weather has been appalling, just look at my tomatoes !
@@JBNat my tomatoes are doing better than chillies, I have fed the chillies with chicken manure pellets this week. And last week watered with extremely diluted seaweed concoction, not much of a change. Anyways, thanks for the suggestion, I will keep them and see what happens
My chillis have stopped before they grew there first real leaves. They’re about 2 inches tall and seem healthy but have just stopped. Has anyone got any advise? They’ve been indoors and on a window seal
Do they need repotting with fresh compost?
Same thing happened to Jessie (plot 37) this year. I've talked a bit about the key things they need in my chilli guide. If you've got everything right but they're not growing in May, then it's time to go back to the drawing board and re-sow.

Too many people saying they’re having compost/potting soil issues for it just to be the weather. Your soil may be alright, but there have definitely been problems with bagged soil starting last year.
Agree because it’s stuff being started indoors which isn’t even germinating, that wouldn’t be weather related. I don’t think it’s an issue with the seeds either.
@@ceridavis8876 Excellent point about the germination issue with seeds started indoors.
I’ve had self seeded chard munched but just left it alone & hey ho. They are growing well. Patience is not my strong suit 🫣however it works
Chard are indestructible once they get going!
