- Newberry County was formed from Ninety-Six District in 1785. Prior to its formal founding, the area was the site of several American Revolutionary War battles: Williams' Plantation, Dec. 31, 1780; Mud Lick, March 2, 1781; and Bush River, May 1781.
The town of Newberry was founded in 1789 as the county seat and was sometimes called Newberry Courthouse for that reason.

I love old southern towns with the birds singing. My Dad grew up in a small rural southern town in Rising Fawn Georgia and it is still small.

Im late to the video. But thanks for visiting town, I live out in the country side about 15 minutes from here. Seems like you enjoyed it! It is a very nice town and it used to be booming along with other towns around when the mills and factories were still around. But what i dont like is alot of the kids are just awful and get into trouble.
I'm considering moving there from out-of-state. What kinds of kids and trouble are we talking about? I appreciate your honesty...

I was there a few years ago. Neat little town to walk around in
I grew up there as a kid and moved away to a bigger city. Newberry is a retirement city. Many of the kids there do drugs and get into trouble. There are no outlets for them to express themselves. It’s more geared for older crowd. It’s way too conservative and reserved. No good eateries, no movies, no good shopping outlets and everything there is old. Hardly anything new. It literally became a city around 1976 and was on the consensus in 2000. Its historic. That’s the only good thing about it. 13:52 used to be the library but they moved it two blocks down the street.

I have a lot of family here I haven’t met yet! Grandmothers family.. I would love to visit one day soon

Newberry had a few soft drink bottlers. Newberry Coca-Cola Bottling Company was located on college street where Pope, Parker and Jenkins law firm is now. The Chamber of commerce building was the original court house.
The Newberry Museum. 😂😂😂 That's the old library building. Many great memories in the library as a kid. When they built the new library I remember people critizing it because it's not facing the main road.
But forreal, as someone who grew up in Newberry - it can be beautiful but there are many two-faced people. Some awesome people too, but there is a have and have not divide and most of the time the haves are the old families, and the wealthy.
The place you ate lunch is a great spot for lunch!

The quaint park was buildings that were destroyed in the 1984 tornado. The museum was the Newberry Library. The Ritz was a stop on Vaudvil (sp). The fire department was in use through to the 90s. Same with the court house you started with. Nice job showing off my ole' stomping grounds.
Correction: I miss spoke about the courthouse. The one you started with is the current court house, not the old courthouse (though it is old). The white one with the Chamber of Commerce is the old courthouse.
I left there in 1992 and I thought the courthouse had moved to a new city building. I was wrong. My Daddy corrected me. Now he could tell you what was what up there.

Newberry is awesome, but something that bothers me- why is it so empty?
Alot of the towns around here were reliant on the mills and factories. Thats why alot of them have stopped growing and declined in population ever since the mills and factories left the area. Thus the stores not having enough people coming in to stay open so they all started closing.
I live there it’s pretty nice when there isn’t gang violence...

Yes the city has found its second breath since Samsung came to town. That’s where I was raised!
It has a pretty good location logistics wise with I26 running through it and it being in the middle of two of the three big metros in the state. (Columbia/Lexington and Greenville/Spartanburg.)

@@Nia-or2ex dont trust any of the old grannies or get sucked into any of their southern charm bullshit and you'll be fine. Dont date anyone from there either
@@Cirepstaf12 depends. Just stay away from the inbred locals and don't get sucked into their families by marrying any of them. If you're past that stage in life then you'll probably be fine. Major drug problems, lots of meth addicts
