About 25 to 30 years ago I found something in a stone wall. It was a small early 1900s metal box we were horribly excited with the anticipation of what we could find. We opened it up it was filled with a few small agates and a hand written prayer on a piece of paper. We read the prayer and put it back… lol

I spent alot of time in the woods as a kid in Ohio. I have found old musket balls, arrowheads, and other oddities at random. My best find ever is a bayonet as I was cutting across a pasture that had a couple neglected ponies in it. It had been raining and the ground was exceptionally muddy, the ponies were wanting our attention, and as I stopped to pet them, one happened to step into a muddy hole causing said bayonet to pop up out of the ground. From what I can find doing my research is that it is a French Lebel Rosalie bayonet, what it was doing I a field, under about 6" of mud in Southern Ohio I couldn't say. It's rusted up without the handle or the end bolster that kept the handle on. I have had it now for nearly 45+ yrs

I would be VERY excited about that trade token from Faneuil Hall! Such an historic treasure. Faneuil Hall was built in 1742 and was the location of several very important events leading to our nation’s independence. It is where colonists first protested the Sugar Act in 1764 and established the doctrine of “no taxation without representation.” Samuel Adams rallied the citizens of Boston to the cause of independence from Great Britain in Faneuil Hall, and George Washington toasted the nation there on its first birthday. That trade token might have even been a souvenir for the people who lived on that farm. Very exciting (to me, anyway).

Hi Brad, the spoon you found in the wall is usually known as a serving spoon.
Some awesome everyday items which to me are more valuable in some ways
as they are very personal to the people that farmed the land there.

Speaking of altered large cents out here in Michigan my buddy found an 1845 one that instead of saying "one cent" it was altered so it said "one cu*t". Apparently it was a brothel token. He found it in a very rural middle of nowhere outskirts of Metro Detroit area. It's very hard for me to imagine a brothel out in this spot but what an amazing piece of History

It is extremely evident that some one believed in re-purposing things according to the various items you found. This person used what they had to go forward, even if it meant putting a hole in a coin or repairing the dresser. No computer program could have done that. Hats off to those who use their mind.

Stone walls are honey holes. In Washington state I hit old homesteads. Alot of times all that is left is a few apple trees maybe a few lilac bushes or a bunch of daffodils. I start looking for sink holes which are root cellars or the outhouse. Be very careful though, sinkholes can be wells or a mine holes also. Cool video.

So that handle plate was probably not from a dresser but from a picnic basket or small luggage container. Possibly even a hat box. Just a thought. My thinking is that the brass fasteners could be woven through wicker or pinned through a harder pliable surface. Great stuff Brad.

  • @devonmikel
    @devonmikel 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Brad, Your using the word escutcheons for antique dresser drawer pulls can be fine in many instances. To expand your interest in historically period dating of dresser decor will broaden as you learn the correct terminology of the items you find. In fact knowing what you have found can substantially increase the value of many items.
Some items are extremely rare and your knowing what they are can highly improve your collection’s and displays.
Having the correct term for your items reaches the people in those fields of interest. For examples: Dresser pulls can very in art designs, materials, periods, continent, manufacturing, skills, to assembling to even craftsmanship.
Some dresser pulls and items were lost wax cast. Some were stamped. Others were hand crafted. Others were press designed to even stenciled to hammered works of art. Generally the back plates that are rounded, ovals or floral patterns are referred to as rosettes. (Rosettes can go in front of ceiling nails and can be mistaken for dresser rosettes.) Were full designed scrolled works of art are back plates of nail heads, others served as decor. There is also assemblage from nails, screws, snapping, strapping (such as the piece you show in this video) held together by the thin strong brass strap, glued on and/or by parts locking.
House and other door handles, drawer pulls. and even old trunk hardware can be a great way to identify the use of furniture or other ways they were used that can pinpoint what there use was and even a family’s wealth to even styles and peoples nationality. Although more information is needed to place apart a French Provincial, a Victorian gilded back plate, a American Style to even others like Baroque to Colonialism or Militaria.
Even designs can be identified by Leafing, Floral, Scrolling, Gilding, Stamping, Hammer Crafted to Casting. Materials used will play huge roles also to know values and identifications. Used often was brass. However many other dresser bails were made of tin, bronze, copper, iron and some parts were wood.
Creativity is found in dresser pulls from ring pulls, handles, press or cast cupping’s to inserts in the wood drawers behind the pull. And some were with keyholes. And at times there can be some confusion as artist may have made some with combination details of interest. There is also those with drop pulls to glass knobs to even more expensive assemblage of precious metals in Gold or Silver. Many artist etched them, inlaid them and even enameled low points to embossing many.
Your videos have been quite inspiring to the historical growth of mankind to even survival and commercial growth and the population expansion of families. It is all well that you take great care to not damage any items while digging and cleaning items. Some through back items you left behind were far more valuable than you knew them to be. In time you may see reasons to add larger or heavier items to your return home backpack.
Nevertheless, all is well and appreciated. A big thumbs up. Enjoy

As a child I buried a tin box with wheat pennies, silver dimes, buffalo nickels, and who knows what else in my parents back yard. I can’t remember where. I am sure the box has rusted away, but the silver bits might still be ok..

Cool story Scott. Maybe hypnosis therapy would help you remember where you hid it. When I was seven or eight my friend and I found a spill of musket balls (dozens of them in one spot) in a stream near Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. The excitement of finding that 'treasure' has had me interested in metal detecting & archaeology for the 54 years since.

The silver will still be good! Get a detector and find it if the property is still in the family and close. Good luck

Awesome! I love your videos! I found a double bladed axe head in the stone wall that was the north boundary of my house in Maine.

Just renovating a barn on my 19th century farm and I found the same handle laying on a sill plate. Found an 1837 Hard Times token a few weeks ago too.

New opening music and beautiful pictures.. these birch trees (if I'm correct) I had to rewind it and realize that that was the raindrops moving through the trees it almost look like the trees were alive. The fungi I always love, just beautiful ❤️
