I'm a 22 year old Kiwi, yet I somehow feel homesick for a culture I have never experienced. Despite all the so-called "progress" we've had and all the material wealth we've accumulated, I can't help feeling our world of today is a much poorer one.

You should come to a Sacred Harp sing! You can't even imagine how good it sounds in person.

This is amazing Alan Lomax has done sooo much for the history of music, Where would we be if it was not for his dedication to documenting such amazing music?

Yep, my thoughts exactly. Blues, shapenote, folk, all kids of stuff that might have vanished if not for him, or at least worked out differently. If the living tradition of Sacred Harp had died out I think the world would be an immeasurably poorer place for it. I can hardly imagine the scope of the loss. In my mind it would be anyway. There would be choirs that would try to sing the stuff, but they'd do it like choirs do it even now, with an example of the real stuff to listen to, they still clean it up and make it soft-edged and smooth, and professional sounding, and it sounds nothing like Sacred Harp.
BTW, I like your avatar. Very sweet.

My how times have changed. I'm from an hour away from this place, in west Georgia, born 1987 and my great-grandmother grew up Sacred Harp singing in east Alabama. Apart from the singing, I note the low or absent incidence of obesity, so unlike today, they're mostly older but all skinny. Lucy Heidorn must be about 50 but look at her arms. And no doubt none of these people ever darkened the door way of a gym even once. That was most definitely not a thing in 1982 rural Georgia. I guess it's what we eat. I also note their attention spans. Everybody immediately turns to the page when she says it. No one's texting or checking their hair or fiddling in pocket or purse. Must've been nice! But yeah A/C would be great. We do have that on them!

I love this. I went to the Church of Christ in childhood and have never forgotten the delights of singing a cappella, the only thing about church that ever made me feel a true sense of spiritual exaltation. This kind of music is a well kept secret, what I want to know is just how many people have never yet enjoyed hearing it and don't know what they're missing!

And let this feeble body fail,
    And let it faint or die;
My soul shall quit this mournful vale,
And soar to worlds on high,
    And I'll sing hallelujah,
    And you'll sing hallelujah,
    And we'll all sing hallelujah,
    When we arrive at home.
Give joy or grief, give ease or pain,
    Take life or friend away,
But let me find them all again,
    In that eternal day.
    And I'll sing hallelujah,
    And you'll sing hallelujah,
    And we'll all sing hallelujah,
    When we arrive at home.
    And I'll sing hallelujah,
    And you'll sing hallelujah,
    And we'll all sing hallelujah,
    When we arrive at home.

Why not do it when you're young? Anyone can do it. Just show up at the next sing. People will find a place for you to sleep, if need be, and food to eat, directions, a ride is likely. Fasola.com lists all the conventions out there.
