Goose bumps ! in '68 no less...her voice is the absolute most expressive, effortless, soul wrenching I have ever heard...she will ALWAYS be my NUMER ONE singer... no one has more depth ! :D
Ella's rendition of this song is the best I've ever heard. Its beauty brings a tear to my eye whenever I listen. Such magnificence! This is the kind of culture that America used to export. Where are we now?
I'm not going to make any comparisons with other singers, nor offer conjecture on what her popularity would be in this day and age. What I can say is that THIS woman singing THIS song is purely magical!
All I have to say is CLASSIC!! Leona Lewis does a magnificent version and so does Fantasia, Ella has to get credit for her range, clarity, and being a pioneer.
Wow....A completely different version from the Berlin concert, but amazingly both were done in 1968- a testament to the soul and longing in such a magnificent voice. Ella was nothing less than a musical goddess. Thanks for such a lovely clip.
ELLA FITZGERALD! "AMERICA'S FIRST LADY OF SONG." Ella was and still is the greatest female singer that we have ever experienced! Her voice was and is a thing of great beauty!
its so hard for me to see this because we know that she started out on the scene at the tender age of 16 or so... worked, struggled, felt discrimination, exceled and lived a long life with her gift. strength of character and mind. times were hard and the course could have lead this voice away from us!! thank you, whomever, for letting us have a little time to enjoy her. scatwoman...
Absolute sophistication. The most power I've ever heard behind anyone's voice. And she looks as though she could do it in her sleep. This is envy epitomized.
I live and die listening to Ella sing ... is chillingly poignant and joyful to hear the sound is clear with his speech, refined, beautiful, and my God is good to have TTiD Ella one day with us .. Unfortunately Ella was singing to the creator and orphaned in their interpretations notorious!
@MusicLoverBrian1 In truth, who's really being cheated? Many jazz artists are down to earth and have no idea of their greatness. They are human, but with a special talent. People are cheated because they want to be. Those of us who love people like Ella, Frank, Mel, Louis, we're never cheated because we know quality when we hear it!
Oh Man... does it get any better than this... Thanks for staying real, At BellaCzar we love that people such as you keep things beautiful and real. Ella is stunning in her vocals.. Kudos
And how proud i am that every so often people accidentally call me Ella Fitzgerald instead of my actual name, which sounds very VERY similar to hers... :)
Summertime and the livin is easy Fish are jumpin and the cotton is high Oh your daddys rich and your ma is good lookin So hush little baby, don't you cry One of these mornings Youre goin to rise up singing Then you'll spread your wings And you'll take the sky But till that morning There's a nothin can harm you With daddy and mammy standin by
Here we go again with the 1977 bit again...This is from April 1968.....I have the ENTIRE special. I am going to post it soon here. Ella Look different in 1977 and had glasses by that time.
Ella would not be boxed in to one type of music, if she got a contract today I believe she would choose music which showcased her amazingly beautiful voice.
@feveroo7 . I like to think that if angels exists, they might have the voice of Ella, or María Callas or Monserrat Caballé. But i also like to be conscious of the humanity of theese womans and i am, as human been, proud of that.
Hello. I want to play a cover of this with my band. Can anybody tell if ella is the actual songwriter, and if not - then who is? :) Its such a beautiful song, and i want to hear the original version. ty.
I have done a version of this song on my keyboards. Check out "Summertime" by Frank Curry. I must admit,it comes nowhere close to this version, but I had no music lessons lol.
Adele doesn't look like a sex worker, and can sing, although not like Ella. Then again who else ever again will ever sing like that. There are wonderful singers out there, one just has to look past the formula presented on radio, youtube etc. For example, check out Gregory Porter live on Jools Holland "Illusion" on youtube. Then check out his other tunes. Truly a great voice singing jazz/soul/R&B etc.
@Rexicano You are right and it's very unfortunate and that is one of the reasons why I really hate the music industry today. And that is also why you don't really get what you pay for when you go see a live performance from these "so-called" singers. They don't even sound the same as they do in the studio but that is because of this autotune that they are using cheating the people. I hate the fact that the talented singers are short-changed, letting these people who have no talent right in.
@Rexicano Although your comment is about one year old, every bit of it is true ! Well said ! Naturally who cares about voices now ! You just strip like Lady Gaga and off you move into stardom ! It is bye bye to singers like Ella frizgerald !
@Rexicano You're right in that sex is everywhere and it's used to sell talentless pretty faces, but I don't think we're cheated out of anything, I've got too many brilliant singers in my iTunes to even cope with, it's just a question of looking harder. And as others pointed out, the are quite a lot of great singers that are mainstream, and not whores. So lets be positive :)
Ella was one of the greatest singers ever...she could vocalize, stylize and interpret any song and make it all her own.
Goose bumps ! in '68 no less...her voice is the absolute most expressive, effortless, soul wrenching I have ever heard...she will ALWAYS be my NUMER ONE singer... no one has more depth ! :D
I am from Lithuania but I adore American music. I just don't know why......
She was and always will be one of the greatest singers ever!
They should place a big, brassy statue of Ella on top of the US Capitol, as far as I'm concerned. This is greatness in the form of a human voice.
Fabulous forever !

M'encanta aquesta versió del "Summertime" cantada per la meravellosa Ella Fitzgerald.
Ella Fitzgerald -my favorite singer, charming voice
Absolute sophistication. The most power I've ever heard behind anyone's voice. And she looks as though she could do it in her sleep. This is envy epitomized.

George Gershwin wrote it for Porgy and Bess. Originally sung by a high soprano, but ooooh I love Ella's version best.

merci ,GEORGES !!
It's from a musical called Porgy and Bess I believe it's by George and Ira Gershwin
Ella would not be boxed in to one type of music, if she got a contract today I believe she would choose music which showcased her amazingly beautiful voice.
She wouldn't make it in today's crappy music world. Thank goodness she was alive when talent reigned.
woah class is right...smooth and rich...mmm mmm
summertime in my heart, lol !
@feveroo7 . I like to think that if angels exists, they might have the voice of Ella, or María Callas or Monserrat Caballé. But i also like to be conscious of the humanity of theese womans and i am, as human been, proud of that.
too true,Rexicano!!!!
there is hope--Adele
@Zaebolista ya that comment was about a year ago. i know it was a simple mistake and so does the person that posted. It's all good.
