    It sets a bad precedence to use a "Y" splitter so the water hose can be used for both clean city water supply and black water flush, even with a backflow preventer (cross contamination). Furthermore, why would you not want pressure regulation on your black water flush? The black water flush line has a vacuum breaker that is susceptible to high pressure connections. The whole reason I first put a regulator on my city water line was to protect that vacuum breaker. I also replaced my cheap B&B plastic vacuum breaker with a Watts cast brass 125 psi max breaker. When the B&B failed, I had water spraying under my bathroom sink vanity and draining out the underside of my trailer.

    • @DownsizingMakesCents
      @DownsizingMakesCents  ปีที่แล้ว

      I always turn off the clean water side when using the black hose flush, plus we do not drink campground water. It’s only used for showers and dish cleaning. Larry

    I put our pressure regulator in the water bay, that way I never forget it. I think all wather hoses will handle the high pressure that might be available at a camp site, so I don't feel a need to regulate the presure from the tap. This has worked very well for us. I also use quick connects and added a couple of more filters in-line with our hose to get better filteration.

    • @DownsizingMakesCents
      @DownsizingMakesCents  ปีที่แล้ว

      Water regulator in the wet bay is a great idea, im not sure why i never tried that. Larry

    • @TraconWizard

    We use a two stage water filter that we assembled ourselves. It is two whole house filters units connected together. The first filter is a sediment filter and the second is a carbon filter. They work great and flow nicely. We drain and clean out the filter after each camping expedition and you would be shocked at how much sediment and stuff is trapped by the filters in a few days.

    something I never see mentioned on any of these video's is purging the air out of your water hose before you connected it to your rig. I use a 45% elbow with a shut off valve at the end and make my last connection at the coach after i turn the water on and bleed all the air out of the hose by using the valve at the end. also try a "zero G" hose, its drinking water rated and very easy to roll up and store and also light weight it has a tough outside jacket like a fire hose.

But I like the RV Hose Grip And the Black Water Flow Meter! We also fill our Black tank closed and fill about 1/2 way as a second dump. We usually have to go inside and read our RELIABLE meter which is impossible to read from outside. We copied Changing Lanes' suggested method of charging the black tank from the bottom with and extra waste valve and water inlet. (The extra valve, if you leave it on full-time, also helps prevent nasty surprises when first removing the valve cover!) I like your idea as well. Like you said - very important to keep an eye on the amount of water going in to the black tank!

    • @DownsizingMakesCents
      @DownsizingMakesCents  ปีที่แล้ว

      I used to use one of those in a travel trailer that didnt have a flush inlet. I am always worried about having a black tank issue someday because fixing it is always a very nasty messy job, an ounce of prevention. Larry

    Great video with many ideas to solve and speed water connections. We also have a Grand Design trailer with a similar water inlet bay. Instead of using a short flexible connector at the water inlet, I use a 90-degree brass elbow, which is never removed. A small pressue regulator is also connected there. The quick connect fitting on the faucet is awesome. It saves getting out the coiled hose and spayer.

    • @DownsizingMakesCents
      @DownsizingMakesCents  ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree a 90 degree elbow will help take some of the stress off of the water inlet. I have quick connects on all hose connections, helps speed up set up and break down times, much faster just snapping a hose end to end when packing it up instead of screwing it to itself. Larry

    I have used a splitter setup like yours however, I been to camp grounds with the water spigot almost at ground level. Some do this if there is a possibility of freezing. With spigots set that low it is almost impossible to connect a splitter as you described. To get around this I have used a 90 degree brass connector on the spigot and then connect the splitter setup to the brass connector. A short flexible hose also works but one has to be careful the short does not kink. A reinforced hose also might work but at times they don’t bend enough. One thing you might try is a 4way connector. One for the water supply, one for the black tank and two for what ever. The unhorsed outlet is good for washing you hands.

    • @DownsizingMakesCents
      @DownsizingMakesCents  ปีที่แล้ว

      Those are great ideas, i should keep a 90 degree connector just in case, I want to get the hose grip with the 6 inch hose as an option. I thought about getting the 4 way splitter but it was more expensive and im cheap, haha. Larry

    I used to use those same QD’s on all my connections. But I found they messed with my pressure regulator settings. QD’s increase the back pressure caused by the built in springs. The pressure drop increases with each QD you use. Have you experienced this issue?
    Great idea for using your own anti siphon valve on the black hose. Most black tank rinse lines have them but you never know if one fails. Good idea.

    In my camper van I use all steel braided hoses and threaded fittings and tees and a 2 gal accumulator tank too and a sureflo 2088 3 chamber pump I could use my 4008 but it was making me mad trying to get the pressure right I keep my plumbing around 50 60 PSI

      That’s pretty high pressure, we dont mind the lower pressure in our rv because it helps us conserve water, but it makes for an unsatisfying shower, haha. We are very rarely on full hookups so if we use the rv shower, we try to keep it under 2 gallons. Larry

    I have a drinking water hose that actually has a brown stripe running the length of it. Guess what it's dedicated use is. lol
    Why not put your fancy pressure regulator on the 6" hose in the wet bay? Pretty hard to forget it at a campground then. ( I see now it has been said already) I use a brass 90 degree elbow instead of the 6" spring hose. With a bay like yours, you could leave it in place and cap it with a common 3/4" cap from any RV store. There might be a way to leave the elbow, water meter and regulator permanently connected in the wet bay too.
    My black tank is directly under the toilet. I just open the toilet valve and stick in a heavy duty spray wand I made (because the ones you buy are crap) and I can jet spray the entire tank, including the level sensors.

    • @DownsizingMakesCents
      @DownsizingMakesCents  ปีที่แล้ว

      Some great suggestions, my pipe from the toilet to the black tank has a bend in it which makes it difficult to clean from the toilet, but I have this special sprayer to get around the bend. My wet bay is tight but I may try to set up the regulator in their. Larry

    I noticed that you do not have a pressure regulator on the black flush hose. I do not trust the connections to my black tank flush to be able to handle some of the insane pressures I have seen at some campgrounds.
    I use my old cheap Camco preset pressure regulator to hopefully prevent the hose popping off the tank. It is always attached to the black tank flush hose. Having that hose "pop off" would be an unpleasant job.
    You gave me a lot of great ideas. Thank you.

    • @WanderingFun
      @WanderingFun ปีที่แล้ว

      I think of the flush as an open-ended setup. I never open my water to the flush until I open the tank release, so the only back-pressure is the spray head connected to the other end of the flush line. We see it “stop up” for a minute sometimes, but some water pressure/weight will build behind the kids’ TP clog and clear they way in a couple minutes or less of flushing.

    • @DownsizingMakesCents
      @DownsizingMakesCents  ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s a great idea, i should probably put the regulator before the splitter to regulate the other hose also, but it may be a more awkward connection to the spigot and hose grip. I will check out what that like. Larry

  • @MoonlightingJames
    @MoonlightingJames ปีที่แล้ว

    I love all your recommendations. However I have been to some campgrounds, esp here in Canada, where the water spigot in the campground is below ground and you have a 2" gap to attach the water hose. As a result I use one of those adapters that has the wire around the junction to prevent kinks.

    • @DownsizingMakesCents
      @DownsizingMakesCents  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes one of the Hose grips with the 6 inch hose would be perfect. Many of the campground we have stayed at provincial parks didnt have a water outlet, but i am going to get on of the 6 inch ones just in case. Larry

  • @BarbMMH
    @BarbMMH ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks for this great information including the specific products; very helpful! I see people using a 20 micron filter at the spigot in addition to the filter in the wet bay. How would that be beneficial? It seems that I would be changing two filters every 6 months instead of just one filter.

    • @DownsizingMakesCents
      @DownsizingMakesCents  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We dont drink water from our fresh tank or city water connection so the stock filter is fine. I think it is a good Idea to have a special filter for drinking water only. I have health problems so it isn’t worth the risk, we just buy gallon jugs of water at Publix, 86 cents each. Larry
