      Hello, my name is Chris Guerriero. I’m reaching out to you to thank you for making the videos on Japan travel especially with the bullet train, JR pass and Wi-Fi alternatives. My wife , son who is graduating from med school and myself are venturing out to Japan to visit our youngest son who is currently stationed in Yokosuka on the Ronald Regan. This is a once in a lifetime experience for us and I’m only a little completely terrified about messing up! Lol we’ve been watching every video while taking notes. I downloaded google translated and another Japanese phrase learning app. We are buying 4 JR passes for three weeks each. Intentions are to go from Tokyo -Yokohama - Yokosuka- Kyoto- Osaka- Kobe- Hiroshima- Tokyo and possibly up to Ginzan Onsen - Tokyo. The JRPass seems like the way to go we will be getting the green pass but is Gran Class worth upgrading to? Can you up grade a prepurchased green pass to Gran class while in Japan? Thanks again for your videos and any help that you can offer. We just missed the JR pass Q &A video by 10 day😕. Thanks again and enjoy that wonderful family of yours. Time goes by so quickly and then the children are adults. That’s why we are doing this trip while the opportunity and time allows.

    Good tips. My tip would be to calculate if the JR Pass makes sense for you or not. We found out that booking locally for the Nozomi train (fewest stops) from Tokyo to Osaka, then Kyoto, and back to Tokyo was a bit cheaper than the JR Pass, so that's what we did.

      This certainly is one of the biggest mistakes people can make with this pass. The JR Pass is not cheap and only worth it if you travel enough on Shinkansen and other Express trains. I'm usually able to make it work, but then again, I did about 5000km on my last trip by Shinkansen. Went all the way up to Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto and down to Kagoshima.

    We ordered our pass through the JR website. They sent us a QR code right away so we didn’t need to wait for a voucher to be mailed. We had to pay a little more for each pass but it allowed us to immediately make reservations for the Shinkansen before leaving Canada. This was good for us as we had 2 pieces of large luggage and needed to reserve the storage space at the back of the car (which is free with your pass). We did have other people use our reserved space once (VERY annoying and the tags on the bags showed they were Japanese people). We just stacked our 2 suitcases on top of theirs. We were in Japan in May, 2023.

      @lauriewu-jf5nh I am in a unique bind. Can you please confirm that I can get a JR Pass online without waiting for a voucher as the comment below states. How do I do that? My passport expired and my appointment for the new passport is on Friday morning and we leave for Japan on Monday morning. There is no time to wait for a voucher to be mailed. Is there a way for me to purchase the JR Pass on Friday with my new passport number and still get a pass? We had 4 small “carry-on” side suitcases and 2 larger suitcases. They all had 4 wheels making them easy to roll. We are a family of 4, with two 20+ year old sons so travel was much easier than had we been with small children. We did have to lug the suitcases up stairs a couple of times, the worst being in Tokyo at the Tamashi station, however usually we could find an escalator or elevator near by. We stayed at the Sonetsa Fresa Inn’s (a chain found in many cities) which offered 2 connecting rooms (plus 2 bathrooms!) at a fairly reasonable price. An amazing feature when travelling with two grown sons.

    if you have too much baggage it would be best to try a luggage service. The Sagawa express tokyo service delivers on time and date.
    I would also recommend buying a IC card (Pasmo or Suica) especially if you know you are gonna go to places that dont offer the JR rail pass. I was going to certain obscure locations and instead of wasting time buying a ticket, I just swipe the card. I like to have my card at about $20 just to be on the safe side and recharge if I believe Ill run out for my next ride.

    Thank you for the valuable advices. I cannot agree more, especially with overpacking itineraries… I also wanted to add our experience with the JR pass we just had on our first trip. When you insert your JR pass at the gate into the ticket machine Always remember to take it out on the other side. Also if you are not quick enough the machine will retract your JR Pass. This happened to us and we had to find a JR staff and explain them what happened. We did get our pass back but we also lost one couple of days earlier and JR passes cannot be re issued!!! If you lost it, it’s gone and cannot buy a new one because they are linked to your passport entry date.

    Remember, the exchange order can be exchanged for the JR Pass up to 90 days from the date on the order itself. As the prices will be increasing in October, you can theoretically buy the exchange order in late Sept and have until late Dec to exchange the order for the pass to avoid the price increase.
    Unfortunately, buying your JR pass through the official website only allows 30 days to activate, so if purchasing in late Sept you have unti late October to get the pass.

    • @KenshoQuest
      @KenshoQuest  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi. The JR Pass often provides a savings when using it for multiple bullet train rides. The pass costs around 29,650 Yen when purchasing through a travel agent. A round trip bullet train ticket for Tokyo - Kyoto would cost about 26,640 Yen for unreserved ordinary car (reserved would cost a bit more). You could make the JR Pass worth it if you use it for at least 3,000 Yen more of travel. For example, getting from the airport into Tokyo. And riding local JR trains within Tokyo and Kyoto. Not all local transportation, such as subways, are included within the JR Pass. For anything not included we recommend getting an IC/SUICA card upon arrival in Japan (you only need one as they are widely accepted). Hi. The JR Pass includes local JR trains. However, it does not include subways. We normally use both a JR Pass, as well as an IC card for subway, bus, and non-JR trains. If you install the Japan Travel by Navitime app on your phone, you can set it to filter to trains included in the JR Pass. That way you can get an idea of which routes are included. Interesting cause I thought even with the Welcome Japan pre-register stuff you still go through a person after you get off the plane, before the automated part, meaning you would get the temp visitor insert which also has the QR code for the tax free.

    • @KenshoQuest
      @KenshoQuest  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi. I think it depends upon the airport. When we arrived at Haneda, we approached the immigration counter and showed the QR codes to the immigration officer, who placed the entry stamps in our passports. I believe it’s Narita that has automated gates. Someone commented on one of our videos that they went through an automated gate at Narita and we’re still able to get their JR Pass. So this requirement may vary based on airport, but I’m not certain. 🌺 Heidi

    why did we experience all of this already?? lol. also, one mistake (or this is just a matter of not knowing), not all of the trains are owned by one or two companies. sometimes, you have to literally go out of a station & go to a different one because the train/station you are in is no longer covered by your specific pass e.g. JR Nat'l Pass vs. JR Regional Pass vs. other competing railway passes including subways

If i start at the subway, then change the line to JR ... can we combine the suica and the jr pass? Or we dont need to change the payment method eventhough we change the line? Hi! Yes, we supplement the JR Pass with a SUICA card. When riding trains/subways in Japan you normally tap in and then tap out of a particular system. So you would tap your SUICA card to enter the subway, and tap your SUICA card again leaving the subway. Then insert your JR Pass at the ticket gate before boarding a JR train. My wife and I were in Japan in April and will return in July. This is how it works - When you purchase your JR pass online via the official JR website, you get a confirmation email immediately which you take to a JR ticket office when you arrive to receive the actual physical JR pass that looks like any other ticket (except it has a tiny QR code on it).
