I love how accessible the list is. streaming services obviously don't have the same catalog around the globe and having the movies on TH-cam is really satisfying.
You should do a power ranking of your favorite film scenes where women in mental health crises pop off on the dance floor. This is important information.
It felt very intriguing for me too, because, fun fact, we do actually have a similar event in Europe every year, the Eurovision Song Contest. So, as someone who does enjoy Eurovision, that movie came to the top of my watchlist.
It's really good, I saw it a few years ago when I had film fatigue and it was getting hard to be excited about movies but it really charged me up and reminded me what it so great about cinema.
That little gay boy talking about Maria Callas is so me. Bless you for featuring La Divina and all the other fab performances on this list. Thank you!!!
Joe W. Remembers: Maybe 30 (?) years ago there was a huge 'Scandal' afoot because word on the street [especially in the gay communities - like in Chicago, where I lived with my significant other - who was a volunteer counselor at the local LGBT Youth Group] was that Sandra Bernhard was shacking up with Madonna [who, I think, had just released, or was about to release her "SEX" book - which put her pretty much "All Out There" - full of nudity and salaciousness - and a Hot Pick for our lesbian friends!] - and when people asked Madonna if she was Actually shacking up with Sandra Bernhard, as I remember it she was like, "Yeah... So What?!?" I also remember those years for her Movie, "Truth or Dare" and so as much as I hate to admit it I would hear the name "Sandra Bernhard" and immediately say, "Didn't she shack up with Madonna?" Which inevitably led the queens around me to shrill, "Who HASN'T Shacked Up with Madonna?!?" [LOVE You, M!] - But I Also remember seeing Sandra Bernhard's Comedy [unfortunately NOT LIVE!] and thinking 'This human fireball IS brazenly Funny!'
King Scorsese, thank you. I was the only person in the auditorium bored to tears by The Joker, the first one. "We already have TKoC and The Master, why am I here? 'It makes no cents', eff off". I need films like these and a dish of cream to get me down from the rage tree again. Great list!
1:04 I'm not kidding when I say I had the exact same reaction. I love Medea and Maria Callas's superb acting, so I was absolutely ecstatic when it appeared on this list.
I started watching Columbo recently, and I started watching your channel a couple months ago. You can imagine it's been a PERFECT storm of "I know who that is!!!!!" every episode. Lee Grant in S1E2 of Columbo remains probably my favorite guest star, her character was so cool and charming. I imagine you've probably watched it, you seem like you'd already be a Columbo fan tbh, but if you haven't: I HIGHLY recommend!! You can start anywhere on that show, so the Lee Grant episode would be a fine one for sure
The ”It’s a Wonderful Life” opening line was for me, a Patreon member that voted for you to talk about the Christmas classic for this month’s poll. While it lost out, I am VERY excited for the next piece. I look forward to every bit of your work, much like I do these wonderful installments during the holiday season! Looking forward to another year of learning and fun, I am so grateful for the world of film I’ve been able to dive into because of your work! 💖
- Thank you for showing us Gen Z good and lesser-known movies to watch! - You look like Alana Haim! - Can you ever do a video on Linda Hunt? - Merry Christmas, Izzy! 🎄 🎁 ❄️
Thanks so much for this list. This year being apart from my loved ones will be especially difficult at Xmas. I’m going to treat myself and pay to see your recommendations. Wishing you a happy holiday. May the world be more peaceful in 2025.
Absolutely love the inclusion of Sandra Hüller in the list! I can still remember the emotions I had at the ending of Anatomy of A Fall! She, in my mind, is without a question the best actor or actress working today! She's just brilliant!
I love your channel even though I’m not the biggest movie person. I think I’ll give these movies a try. I like how you explained each of them and they all sound very interesting!
I became obsessed with Guy Madden after seeing The Saddest Music in the World. His cinematic style is so strange, yet nostalgic. Isabella is so good in it.
Girls of the Night!! Saw this movie earlier this year and absolutely loved it. There is an extended interview with Tanaka in the documentary "Kenji Mizoguchi: The Life of a Film Director," and her viewpoint on her relationship with Mizoguchi as well as other facets of media is just fascinating.
I'm so grateful I live in a country that subtitles films. The only thing dubbed would be animated children's films, and even then you can often choose to watch an undubbed version both at the cinema and on DVD.
I feel you would be in the mood to also watch someone like Marie Windsor in The Killing (1956) for how cool-headed she when sounding off some of the most venomous lines in any 50s movie.
Joe W. Shrieks: OMG! OMG! OMG! I want to THANK YOU - Again - Izzy! For including 'The Saddest Music In The World' in this List! I too have ADORED Isabella Rosselini for Eternities - ever since my late sister Sally took me to see "Blue Velvet" towards the end of the year it came out - at a "pitcher show" which existed for a time in what had previously been a temporarily Abandoned Cinema near our home (the house i grew up in - where I live Again Now - in the "Mother-in-Law Suite" that once was Sally's) - i was still a teenager, but my sister proceeded to order a full pitcher of beer and then insist that i help her drink it (When I insisted, "No - I'm underage - they'll throw us Out!" She countered, "They absolutely WON'T - Dude! They Need the Revenue!" Which was true because the attendance at this particular showing was... Sparse!) - Anyway I felt i HAD TO SHARE THAT BECAUSE beer itself plays an important role in "The Saddest Music in the World!" [And I have actually told people, "I was a drunken teenager when I first saw "Blue Velvet" - and it was Absolutely Mind-Blowing!"] Anyway if i had a dollar for every time i have Described "The Saddest Music in the World" to a person who had NEVER HEARD OF THIS MOVIE! - So Again - THANK YOU! 😃 Also - because we're talking about Isabella Rosselini - and i absolutely HAVE TO SHARE THIS - one of my all-time Favorite Movies EVER is "Fearless" starring Jeff Bridges... Surrounded by an Amazing cast of costars [Tom Hulce, Stockard Channing, Rosie Perez in the role that Broke My Heart and made me LOVE HER FOREVER... to name some] - Anyway in "Fearless" Isabella Rosselini brings the absolute magic of her craft to portraying the wife of Bridges' protagonist - and OMG - the way she handles what I believe for Most would be a truly unenviable role (her character Really moves through the movie and advances the storyline in critical ways, and has a character arc of her own that again - really requires superb talent to carry off) - after seeing that film I was honestly a FOREVER FAN! YAY - Isabella Rosselini! [And Thank You Again - because I was completely unaware of her Adventures with the Farm Animals! So COOL!]
You are the only person on YT who I agree with 100% of the time! I've seen quite a few of these films and I loved the King of Comedy too!!! And double Anthony Perkins (LOL)
When The King Of Comedy was first out, everybody and their uncles were absolutely gushing over Bernhardt's performance so much that by the time TV film critic Neal Gabler got around to it, he only said non-chalantly, "...and she's very good." Carnal Knowledge and the underrated When A Stranger Calls are the only Carol Kane movies I recall seeing. I'm sure I've seen others with her in them but can't recall them.
I'll definitely have to check some of these out. I've seen Crimes of Passion when I was young (latch key kid, so it was probably on HBO or something). I'm looking forward to your next video about old movies and pop music. Janet Jackson was incredibly influenced by the old films, and she even featured a bunch of legends like Cyd Charisse and the Nicholas Brothers in her "Alright" video.
Vintage Obscura's Halloween mixes and your Christmas recs are how I flavor my holiday seasons and I hope to keep doing so for years!!!! Thanks for all the awesome work, always.
I haven't seen the list but i wanna trow Essie Davis and her performance fron The babadook into the mix just because she deserved some good damn love! Underrated as hell!
😅Thank you. 1. Just the other day in a live non-entertainment chat, no one knew why Pearl B is famous. I'm glad you featured one of her films. I knew she was famous for starring in the Hello, Dolly revival and a regular talking head on the 60s to 80s talk/variety/game show circuit. 2. Carole Kane won the Emmy for Best Lead Actress in a Comedy for her semi-reguliar role on Taxi around 1980. She played Andy Kaufman's wife,. Carole and Andy were so out there, I'm suprised they ever made it back. 3. I had problems with Mahogeny. All the acting was good. a. The writing. b. By then, Anthony became the Go-to-Crazy. A better script would have helped his role. c. If AbFab wasn't so many years later, it could be seen as Mahogony's parody, making the fashion world as trivial.
Thank you for recommending these films. After the election, I've been in a certain mood and I think some eclectic, female-strong movies are what I need. Plus, I love that you love Mahogany.
About Isabella's entry- Only a European could come up with that plot, because of reasons...called that we have a real international competition of music celebrated amongst European countries every year. Eurovision, but make it sad. Serbia is just your normal Serbia, but sure Finland and Moldova suffered finding a song. Sad ain't their usual vibes.
I’m planning on using Xmas gifts to rent or buy all the Barbara Stanwyck movies I haven’t seen that are available digitally. Speaking of Stanwyck, Remember The Night is a great Xmas movie for adults.
Great recommendation! Stanwyck is one of my top 5 actresses of all time, and I watch Remember the Night every December. It's totally overshadowed by Christmas in CT (which is charming), but Remember the Night is such a strong film. Definitely a Christmas film for adults.
@@rebeccag8589 mine too. @nicklundy9965 Absolutely! I love this channel and I also love the comments section, I get great ideas here too and just get excited in general because I'm very much a nerd about movies :) Those are all wonderful choices! Have you seen Sorry, Wrong Number? It's noir like Double Indemnity or Martha Ivers and she's great in it, and playing a very different sort of role. I also love her in Stella Dallas.
@@rebeccag8589 I heard about Sorry wrong number (particularly the ending) but never got around to watching it. Stella Dallas is one I put off for sometime I usually go back and forth between her and Hepburn on whose filmography I should check out.
they're remaking Narnia. they have Greta Gerwig remaking Narnia and it's all about "rock and roll." slated for release in July 2025. Happy new year BKR.
Love Pearl B in "Cannibals" too although I disagree about Wagner! And "Mahogany" is the campiest movie ever which makes it a very fun, guilty pleasure!
The real story of Annalise michel (the woman on which requiem was based) is so sad. It was turned into exorcism of Emily rose too, which is more court drama than anything but I do adore that movie
You never cease to amaze me BKR. All these are gems ( many I saw in original release!) and you see things from a way no others do! Who ARE you??? Love and have a weird holiday season! Keep being weird. You sparkle in this meleui. ❤️💙💜💋
Wow. Thanks for recommending "The Saddest Music in the World" It's rare to find a movie/show that takes place in my province. Not surprised that it's directed by Guy Maddin. Would also recommend his semi-documentary "My Winnipeg"
Thank you for inspiring me to watch more great works! I wonder if you'd be interested in shining a spotlight on Maria Casares, a huge presence in everything she appeared in

Sandra Bernhard is hysterical in King of Comedy, especially her last bit with Jerry Lewis
She blew me away in Plump Fiction- one of the worst movies ever made and she was still hilarious
"Robert Wagner can't act for shit, which sucks." is a M O O D and I am here for it.
