  • In this video, I talk about how to paint edges and create movement, from the tools I use to the techniques I employ. Edges are very important in my work and I’ve spent quite a lot of time perfecting my edges. I hope what I share here will help you. I love questions and comments so if you have one or the other or both, I’d love to hear from you below. Thanks for watching! #abstractart #oilpainting #paintingtutorial

Movement in a painting is hard for a somewhat beginner to understand. This was very helpful and I love how you present your classes. Thank you

Oh! Once again when you flipped it upside down the “sky” became stunning from the work with the orange edge! (I thought the delicate music playing was “here comes the sun”. )The clouds in the unblended area organically appeared. The painting went from night to day….magical! Love your work and am so thankful for your videos. Your work is compelling. Thank you ❤

Always so appreciate your insightful comments about my paintings, Carol! You've made me see the painting in a whole new way... time to contemplate the next "move" 😊You will be seeing the progress again in some forthcoming video! Many thanks for your continued interest in the Whole Artist Mastery YT channel!

@@mariannemitchellwholeart can’t wait to see it progress! If I had been the artist I would stop in fear of losing what appeared. Fearlessness must come with years of experience of knowing you can improve what’s already there. I learn so much from you, and hope to be able to explore the wonders of oil painting someday, applying what you selflessly share. Thanks so much.

Great demo! I work in acrylic, so the process is a little different. When I am working in flat shapes that meet, I love letting the contrasting underpainting show through at the edges, varying the width of that peekaboo from zero to quite strongly visible.

Many thanks Ellen! I love your description of what you enjoy about creating an edge between flat shapes. I too, enjoy those surprises that are revealed in the thick and the thin movement of an edge. That's what makes an edge what I call "dynamic" meaning that it moves in a fluid kind of way instead of being static. Cheers to your practice!

I work with acrylics, too. I am relatively new to painting and for some reason, I am intimidated by oil paints. I am assuming the technique for the edges would be the same in acrylic. I love watching Mariann's techniques and am a huge fan of her work.

@@gracejones2831 Many thanks for your comments! I was intimidated by oils for a long time, even though it was my first painting medium. Since I decided to work with them it the manner that works for me as opposed to "the way it should be done" all sense of timidity and intimidation melted away! And yes, the edge technique can be applied to acrylic paint - worked in acrylics for 15 years before I went back to oils.I so appreciate your words about my work... Cheers!
