Many big pak players lost their nerves and missed golden chance of scoring goals in this series but pilly not. Whenever pillag was in position of scoring goal, he did. And even he was just near retirement.

Then 1st match played in india won by india. At the end of 5th match it was almost sure ind will win series due to remainimng matches due to home ground advantage and due to a lead of 3- 2. But 6th match drawn. And 7th and 8th match won by pak and pak team made shocked to indain fans and analysts. I was 17 years old college boy that time and i still remember whole thrilling without any searching on net later on. This is just my memory and excitement of that time.

Excluding Dhanraj Pillay, on papers, remaining indian team was below the level of Pak team. But indian team deserves to be praised as they played very well specially in lahore and karachi. Although pak won series by 4-3 but they surprised pak team by a very close defeat. That was a time period when home ground was not an advantage but a pressure due to extra involvement of govts armies and public. That time game was not sonsidered a game but a war.
And next 4 mstches played in india and won by pak by 2-1. 8 match Series won b Pak by 4-3. On papers pak team was stronger but india gave very tough time to pak.

Also gold is not everything g.. its like saying a race is won by 1 person then why the hell other 10 are running. Argentina Belgium england have come out to be brute force in last decade.
