    Start of the day:
The capital of Greece is full of archaeological sites and #museums. In order to orient ourselves, as we do regularly, we chose to take a #tourist bus. In addition to multiple trips to the heart of the city, our package included a ticket to visit the #Acropolis and a few other sites of interest.
    First stop: #acropolis
First real stop of the day, the site of the Acropolis of Athens which includes many monuments including the Parthenon. There are many people who want to visit this wonder of antiquity which is one of the most visited tourist sites in the world.
Rising in the center of the city of Athens, the site has long served as a citadel, but remains above all an ancient religious sanctuary. It is believed that the site was first used as a habitat, then as a fortress before becoming, during what is called the Archaic and Classical periods, a great sanctuary dedicated to the cult of #athena .
Along the way, you will first discover the impressive Roman #theater which is actually the Odeon of #herodes Atticus, built in the year 161. The building was rediscovered and restored in the 18th and 19th centuries. Nowadays, the monument hosts cultural events of international renown.
    Second visit: the #Roman #agora
This ancient public square of Athens allows us to better understand what was the central market and the gathering place of the city under the yoke of the Romans. It should be noted that there were two neighboring but distinct agoras in Athens. We will also visit the real agora of Athens in the next episode.
Among the remains of the site, the marvelous #towerofthewinds, also called the clock of Andronicos. Before becoming a church, the building was in fact a hydraulic clock. It should be noted that deities of the Winds adorn each of its eight sides.
    Third stop: #monastiraki square
In addition to Hadrian's library, there is a small church, an old mosque converted into a museum and a variety of shops that delight the thousands of tourists who pass there every day.
Fourth Visit: Hadrian's Gate and Olympion
Another interesting archaeological sector for lovers of ancient ruins, that of the Olympéion located south of the Acropolis. First of all, tourists happily discover Hadrian's Gate, also known as Hadrian's Arch. As for the #Olympéion, it was dedicated to #zeus by Emperor Hadrian, but the earthquakes got the better of the huge building in the #Byzantine era. Subsequently, the site was also used for the construction of many other buildings in the city.
Last stop: The famous Panathenaic Stadium
The place hosted the first Olympic Games of the modern era in 1896. The current building is in fact the renovation of an ancient stadium which would have been inaugurated in - 300 BC. Expanded and renovated many times , it could have accommodated up to 50,000 spectators around 140 CE. Its ruins were rediscovered around 1836, after the independence of Greece.
