Take of the front skid plate and do this job from under the truck. It's 10 times easier. Use a roll of shop towels for a comfortable pillow 😌. Oh another thing! There's a small hole on the bottom of the tensioner. Take a skinny L shaped Allen screw and release the tension. Once you release the tension, stick that L shaped Allen key in the hole. That will hold the tensioner back. Once the new belt is put back in place, release the tension and pull out the L shaped Allen key and done.
I have found it is more of a pain trying to reach both hands down or up to the tensioner and put a pin in than just keeping the ratchet or wrench on it and pushing or pulling when you are ready to put the belt on again. Doing from the bottom is an option I didn't want to mess with taking anything off that doesn't need to come off plus I hate laying on the ground.
I know this is an old video but wanted to take a minute to thank 737mechanic for doing it. I watched the video carefully and then tackled the job of installing a new belt to replace old one that broke. The job went fairly well. I did take the plate off from underneath (too thin to call it a skid plate) and that made the job easier for me as I could more easily see the pulleys and routing. Great advice from 737 to print off a routing diagram from the net for the belt. That helped enormously. Thanks again!
The last thing you did on removal was route it over the fan, so the first thing on replacement would be to route it back over the fan to keep it simple.
This is timely for me. Great video with grest input! 80% of the belt was gone... just threads. Ordered the belt on amazon, delivered the next day. Dumped the skid plate, cut what was left, pinned the chsin tensioner, and done in 3 hiurs.
I would like to express my gratitude for posting the instructional video on how to replace a belt. I appreciate your videos. Since I know I will be installing a new belt, I am wondering if I should simply cut out the old belt. I am also grateful that you included the part in the video where you struggled with the installation. This way, if I have a meltdown and cannot install the belt, I will know that it was not easy for you either. Often when I watch a video, the person completes the task in seconds, which makes me wonder why I bother attempting to do things myself.
Good job' gonna do mine tomorrow, I removed the radiator and fan shroud and the bottom skid plate to give me more room. Can't believe you did that without hearing a few damns and a couple of shits on the side .Thanks much!!!
lol, at the 10:00 minute mark is the moment he realizes..."Ooops, I forgot to go over the fan first". I probably would have done the same. I have to do this soon, thanks for the video.
Had an idea for those nerdier guys here. If you have a discord or video chat app on your phone and you have a buddy with you, you could stream from one phone to the other to see a little easier where your belts going. Imma try it friday. I'll lyk. Great video man. Very easy. Appreciate it.
Depends on the brand of the belt, the make and model of the car, the climate it is driven in, and whether it is a lot of highway driving vs stop-and-go and-go driving. I have seen belts with 100,000 still in good shape and belts with 50,000 that are cracked and need changing.
Just checking, if you replace the tensioner pulley that is the only pulley that has a reverse thread is that right and the other 3 are standard direction left to loosen?
As long as you don't mind laying on your back and having to remove the skid plate that is great. At my age anytime I can do something from the top I do it.
Honestly, you’re not saving the old belt just cut it once it’s off. If you aren’t keeping it as a backup no point in wasting the effort. I keep a new belt in my truck as a spare in the seat compartments and tools just in case
@@737mechanic thank you for this video btw. I’m not sure why I felt this was harder than it actually is. I’ve never had to change the belt yet and at 230k miles I think I might now haha.
that was some great video. It just seems like that belt does not provide enough traction to the water pump pulley. I wonder if slippage on the water pump pulley could cause these Tacoma belts to have a shortened life. One of the very few times Id ever question the Toyota engineers.

3:00 was the best when you shoved the diagram down

That was hilarious.

I like bottom method , quick removal of skid plate . Thanks for upper install vid .

Yes, you can cut the old belt off. One thing you may want to do is measure the new belt with the old and make sure they are the same.

Nah...why remove the fan shroud when you can bruise up your forearms like I did??
Just changed mine with my brother, thank you so very much

Nice work my belt just broke today so will do mine soon, i took a pic of ur paper.
only video I can find of someone doing this from the top. Thank you!

That view inside the engine Bay helps a lot! I paid someone to do this for me but I just wanted to see what I was paying for.

Thank you very much on how to change serpentine belt , I will be doing it your way on my Taco 🤠
Thank you, You are The Man.
Thanks for sharing this video great job 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉I’m going to replace my today
Thanks for sharing this video great job 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Well if you got big forearms do the bottom method
Thanks for this video. I'll try to do this my self. So is just one belt that goos around ac water pump and alternator??
Yes just one belt.
@737mechanic great. thank you!
It went smoothly I was able to change the belt thanks to your video!
What kind of miles before seeing belt cracks…?

My Tacoma has 140k
So I need to inspect it…farm truck…tough life.

thanks friend for diagram of band✌️✌️
Great Video! Thanks
I modified the bottom of my fan shroud so I could pull it off and give me more room.
Need a new belt tensioner!
Thanks a lot for the vidio!!
I'll help me to replace mine!!
Wondering wen you were going to figure out you have to rap it around the fan first
Thanks, I will do this soon, I know it will not be easy
Awesome video man. Thanks ALOT!!!
How many belts does this have altogether? Is it just serpentine belt and then the timing chain?
Yes, just the one serpentine belt. Of course, the timing chain hopefully will last the life of the engine.
Thank you You Are Good.
Thank you!
