He's told the story on trash taste w few times - that his japanese mom only spoke to him in japanee. It's quite clear he was able to pick up on the accent and such.

What makes this song so peculiar in a good way is the not so in line voice both you and joey have, his is very different contrast that stands out like a glitch in a system, like it doesn’t fit, but my gawd it adds a ton of flavor to the vocals, it peaks people’s interest because his voice is off. That is what makes the song even more better, imperfect perfection

My favorite detail in this cover is the decision to sustain the final vowel sounds in words (most notable in Joey holding the 'te' in "furuwashite" at 42 seconds in and the 'be' in "sekurabe" at a minute seven seconds) really adds a level of passion in the delivery that resonates with me a lot. Thank you all for this!
