I grew up in Stockport in the 80's and 90's before moving to Australia. I had a great time growing up in and around Stockport! I was amazed at this video as i barely recognised a majority of what you filmed. There seems to have been a huge amount of refurbishment and building that has happened over the last 20+yrs. I hope to go back there to take a look for myself in the next couple of years.
In the 60s before mersey way was built on, we used to ride up Princess st, through the square, down Mersey way, and repeat, chatting up the girls at every opportunity. Happy Days
Born and raised in Stockport, work behind the pyramid too and when in the office was walking regularly through the TC too. Not half a bad town that’s had it’s ups and downs and is certainly on its way up in recent times despite what resident whinge-bags and naysayers say, usually it’s those who can’t accept change and investment being put into the town and who want the place to stay a half empty run down, unpolished heap 😂. The town is getting long term investment to repopulate and overhaul the existing run down areas and transport routes, has a great football club, good facility’s and some good eateries too in and around the local areas. Thank you for the nice vid 👍
Not a single department store in the whole town. Even NEXT has fled. How is that an improvement? I used to visit the town centre every week because of the variety of the stores, now I only go about once every couple of months when I really need to.
I remember walking around stockport post covid. There were loads of closed down shops and only drug addicts and teenagers up to no good were walking around. After coming out of the redrock and heading to the car some alcoholic holding a stella tried to sucker punch me for no reason. It made me quite sad seeing Stockport in that state so its nice to hear its getting improvements. I currently study away from Stockport and commute from a town far worse than it. The saddest thing is nobody is doing anything about it and the Labour MP who is in charge doesnt even live here because its that bad.
Some of the new buildings are bit like in any town. The older bit of town is nice. Loads of choice of shops. Most noticable.......NO RUBBISH on the streets. Thumbs up !
I was there a month ago. I'm now back in Libya and although Stockport is not the prettiest, go into Bramhall if you're looking for good good and great shops, it still beats Tripoli!
Stockport used to be a lovely busy vibrant town , like most towns there is nothing really to see, drab dirty empty shops , definitely lots or crime and YES I live there.
Agree! It is a dump compared to the vibrant town it used to be. No shops of any quality, all the major stores have fled. There always seems to be ‘refurbishment’ going on, but nothing really improves.
I've lived here nearly 20 years it has some really good events and I love the market.I am loving seeing the change and new developments. Also has a really good history. Yes there is crime but I feel happy living here. Love the Light cinema and new music venues and restaurants, shops, bars, cafes etc are bringing in people from all over. Also proud we have filming locations here. Also a fantastic football stadium and team Stockport County FC.
Nice walk down memory lane. I worked at Merseyway Food Market back in 1979 straight out of High School, haven't been back since, it's changed quite a bit. Now living in the States for the past 35 years.
Not many beggars on that walkabout. Note the scroat on the scooter at 7.53 going the wrong way up a bus lane. Also the pigeon kicker with the strange hair at 8.28. Lots of empty shops now. They are always digging the pavement up.
Stockport is my own town or the closest town to me... very rarely do we go there...due to it feels that its run down but, you shown it in a good light 👍
Watched this last night, this is my home town and has been for 50yrs+ there has been a decline in the town for many years its a shame really the council need to lower rents of shops and get people back in them, too many nail bars, vape and charity shops, great vlog though, will be watching more of them 😊 6:21
New homes being built around the bus station and where the old sainsbury store was, we are looking at moving out of the area because property prices are ridiculous we cant afford what we want. Thanks again for the film, maybe one day we could put a face to your name lol 😊😅😅😂
Love Stockport my home town but I don’t care for all the red they’ve put up like on the front of the plaza and the new cinema could have been a better choice of colour Everyone I know thinks it’ll date really quickly and look shabby That aside they have improved Stockie and still love to shop there much more than Manchester City centre Thanks for posting X
Princes Street where Redrock is seems to have changed name, long ago was a busy bustling street with lots of people and shops but times change, the people and shops gone, or empty? So many nail bars? The bridge over the start of The Mersey - at least the merging of the Rivers Goyt and Tame is under there somewhere?
If when you came down from the market you did a left instead of carrying on into Mersey square, it would have taken you towards it! Some really old buildings and staircases! Very interesting! Great vid too!👍
I used to pass through Stockport when I lived in Buxton for my studies. Unfortunately I didn't spend much time in the town but people had above average opinions about the place.
Very well filmed, and it's nice to see that there might be a chance of an important change to this once pleasant town. Any sort of crime should surely be dealt with by the local police, I would have thought.
